National Emergency

So the President is going to sign the bill to avoid a shutdown and declare a national emergency so he can take money from hurricane victims in Texas and PR and apply it to the wall.

As a moderate, I'm not against the wall for some moral reason, nor do have more than passing interest in the folks trying to sneak across. I just don't think it will work. 6 Billion Dollar wall < $29.99 extension ladder from Mexico's version of Lowes.

BUT IMHO, this national emergency thing is a bad, bad idea. I get the reasoning behind it. Sometimes one person needs to make fast decisions to solve problems that we simply don't have time for the democratic process to play out. War, natural disasters, etc. This is not that. Trump has been President for 2 years, and funding for the wall wasn't even important enough to cause a shutdown until the Dems took control of the house, much less cause a national emergency. What changed? This kind of situation allows the President to have too much power.

Picture this Trumpians. Trump loses to (insert Democratic candidate here). That President then declares a "health care emergency" because millions of Americans are without insurance then grabs money from wherever to fully fund Obama care. Tell me you wouldn't be up in arms. Bad idea all around.

If you run a socialist country like the US + have the ability to create currency on a whim = you can accomplish any feat, i.e. walls, health care, wars, etc. without repercussions. Why worry about it if no one ever has to pay for it, simple.

Any national emergency declaration has to be constitutional. One of the cornerstone dutys of the executive branch is national security. All of this other supposed crap like healthcare, green emergency, gun violence...etc will not cut the mustard constitutionally. Now would I be shocked to see a future POTUS try it?.....NO.

My understanding of this process is that after trump declares a national emergency, congress can overturn it. Then the senate has 28 days to vote on it, mandatory. As you stated correctly, the entire two years that the republicans controlled the house and senate, they never put forward legislation that included a wall. In fact they resisted it. They will now be forced to vote that they think a wall is a good idea, and that it is a national emergency. It will be bad look for them.

I don't think a future emergency will be healthcare. It will be global warming which the president then believes threatens our military well being. This is not a smart move by Trump. What a shock!

Let’s recap. Trump was offered $1.6 billion for his wall. He threw a temper tantrum and shut down the government for a month, then caved like a *****. Three weeks later he signed a bill with $1.3b in wall funding. Now he has declared an emergency to get funding, but will likely never see a dime of that money. That wasn't even wall funding. It was "Border Security" and it couldn't even be used for new walls, just to fix current fencing.

Good point, but wasted on the Trumpians. This is a guy who has spent his ENTIRE life trying to make money and make sure that everyone knows how rich, successful, and smart he is. So much so that he would pretend to be his own employee and call up the news media to blow his own horn. This is practically the recipe for a person who can be bought... the price tag is simply higher than the norm.

So this dude who's spent his entire life taking care of himself all of a sudden decides he is going to MAGA. And the Trumpians believe him because he told them so.
