In the only two sports that matter, being a successful head coach requires a blind eye to sleaziness. Always has.

Need to add something about Bediako here. And probably his interactions with referees during games, although I don't know how you quantify that one. God I can't stand that guy.

Nate Oats is a real, true POS human for those reasons and more.

Agree completely. I thought about this the other day, and maybe it should be a separate question or poll.

Greg Byrne, or The Ninja, has been pretty much universally respected and admired amongst the MSU fanbase for what he did here.

Does Byrne's standing by Nate Oats through the player involved murder, the other crimes, the attempt to use a professional player, and his general antics change your thoughts on Byrne?

- Not really sure why his ex-wife's cancer status from a decade ago is listed. Would love to hear a response so I dont just assume why.

- As for Holloway, he was arrested on drug charges and suspended from the team. That seems to be exactly what should happen. Why is that incident listed in a manner that makes it seem like something to hold against Oats?

- I have no idea about the divorce and engagement incident. That seems pretty TMZesque and I just cant bring myself to condemn someone when I dont know the full story. I dont really consume tabloid stories, so I will likely continue to not know the full story. If there is no more to the story, then it looks like he either had an affair or he met someone he wanted to be with more than his wife. It isnt illegal or unethical or whatever from a coaching perspective...and he is a coach.

- If Brandon Miller played for MSU and both police and the university said he was not a suspect and he was never arrested, I would have wanted him to keep playing. If people have an issue with the Miller incident, they should direct their outrage at police.

Oats irks me as a coach, but I think it is mostly because he is so active and aggressive on the sideline. He is a zealous advocate for his team and players and it gets annoying.

Well, for me, I suspect we only know a small part of the full story, and without all of that, it's hard to be critical of Byrne.

I think Oats is a scumbag for sure based on what we can see. But I don't know what I don't know. Full transparency, I think Byrne has lost a little bit of his luster, but it's not going to change my thoughts about how he transformed our athletic department.

I've posted about this assshat before, and that was in his first year here.

I think y'all dismissed me because of my well-documented hate for all things Bama. Fair enough, but Nate Oats is a legit bad dude.

Sometimes you'll hear stories about a person and think, "no way, not him".

With Nate Oats, from what I have personally seen, heard, and experienced, if I heard he drowns puppies and buried hitch-hikers in his backyard, I wouldn't be shocked. He is one despicable human being that can apparently recruit and coach college basketball.

It does a little for me. I think Byrne knew/knows how to win, and his abilities really showed through at smaller schools/smaller budget athletic programs - where you have to be smart and bold and it's almost a 'no lose' proposition. Meaning, here at State - firing a coach or hiring an unknown coach is acceptable, and if it works you look like a genius. If it doesn't work, oh well, at least you tried.

He's basically gotten to the top of the game in college athletics, where the Peter Principle kicks in. There's a huge microscope on him - and his questionable football hire has turned up the heat tremendously. So in my opinion he's turning a blind eye in other sports that are winning (basketball and baseball notably) to try to tamp down the heat somewhat. I understand it, and I might do it too under duress and to keep my high profile/high paying job, but it does make me think less of Mr. Integrity when I see him supporting Nate f'ing Oats.

Do w really want to get into dragging up stuff from coaches because our coach doesn't have a spot free past. Some stuff is not quite as public.

We do know for a fact that Brandon Miller was asked to bring the murder weapon to the murder scene and did so. When asked to bring the gun, Miller replied "Bet" and brought the gun.

A 23 year old woman with a five year old son was murdered.

Miller, one of the best players in college basketball, continued his at Alabama without a single consequence.

He averaged 20 for the Charlotte Hornets this season.

I guess I thought the most cringe coach from the state of Alabama retired recently... I was wrong.

And whatever is public is public, the facts are what they are. Anyone can feel free to dismiss them all if they so choose. Like the fact that his fiance is 8 years older than his oldest daughter.

The problem with Bama basketball is a public, disturbing, brand damaging pattern for the overall Bama brand. Not like you can hide felonies from active players. And Nate Oak publicly shared the info about his new fiance recently. Bama extended his contract just a few days afterwards, making him one of the highest paid basketball coaches ever.

Ok but are you saying that if Holloway is playing for MSU, he doesn't get in trouble?? What is Oats supposed to do. Follow Holloway around 24/7?

No I think the players that commit felonies make their own bed to sleep in.

My point is that Bama basketball is shady as hell lately (Oats is responsible for the program and his personal brand) and Bama just keeps on rewarding Oats with record breaking coaching contracts.

I will say this - at least the football staff seems to mentor their football players and make them better men.

This aint ole St. Nick and sweet as southern tea Mrs. Terry we are talking about here.

I don't disagree with any of that. I just don't know how much that taints Byrne. I'm sure they were getting legal advice all along the way.

Not a Nate fan, but let’s be real, he’s been kicking our tails since he got there. I’ve learned with coaches, outside of a select few, the more you dig the worse it usually gets.

I'm guessing their 1099 contract paying players is officially and unofficially 20 times ours

It’s interesting, two of my diehard Bama coworkers would have laid down their own lives defending Brandon Miller during that season a few years ago. Both completely changed their tune this year after a Bama Boosters’ meeting in Bham. The consensus was “no way Miller shoulda kept playing that season” and “he’s lucky he’s not in prison”.

Kinda takes the luster out of the rest of us making fun of them for supporting murder accomplices, because now, they believe that to be true, too.

Other than that, I’ve never seen ownership the way Oats owns Jans. The clash of styles could not be different. I believe he’s now 9-0 vs Jans with an avg margin of something like 27 points. It kinda shows how archaic Jans style of play is.
