Interesting trade. Garrett's the best defensive player in the game, but is at the age where he will almost certainly start to decline. Verse has superstar potential and is already one of the game's better pass rushers. Giving him up, along with a #1 draft pick and some more picks, is a damn steep price to pay. Rams probably got a bit better for the next couple of seasons, but at the price of having a shorter timeframe in which to win big.

Their window to win will likely close soon once Stafford is done anyway. They’re most definitely in “win now” mode.

Imagine being Jared Verse. Living good in LA and seeing his name pop up in this trade to Cleveland.

Woof.
CA taxes vs Ohio taxes? Plus you can afford to live just about anywhere in the off-season?

Pretty good deal economically, albeit there is no way he is winning a Super Bowl in Cleveland.

La and California generally are s*** holes. Unfortunately, Cleveland is in the same category as La, but Ohio is way better than California.

Tell the tourists, they don't believe you.

I agree, Ohio is not a good tourist state. I was talking about a place you wanted to stay more than 2 weeks. Many people have been leaving California over the last 5 or 10 years because it is a s*** hole. I visited Hollywood about 3 or 4 years ago and it was a total dump. It takes people being California stupid to turn a worldwide icon into a dump. I graduated from high school in Santa Barbara and went to UC Santa Barbara my freshman year and transferred to Bowling Green ohio. I also lived in Naples Florida for three or four years because my father was a teaching golf pro. I am very familiar with all these places.

Setting aside partisan posturing and bickering, do you actually believe that Santa Barbara is a shitehole?

it is okay. it is not a practical place to do anything. I would say about 80 to 85% of Americans cannot afford to live there. it has nice places to look at and there is not Los Angeles level homelessness or s*** in the streets. My nutshell summary of Santa Barbara is that it is a place for very wealthy people and servants. not much room for anybody else.

As far as tourist spots go, Hawaii is way nicer and More beautiful than Santa barbara.

That does not match my experience with Santa Barbara. Though I have not lived there, I have been traveling there for work for a long time, and I even got married there. I am neither very wealthy nor a servant. It's beautiful place to visit with a lot to do and see. I do not think that Hawaii is a comparable destination. I love the big island, and we spend a week in Kona every couple of years. It's lovely, but it is a very different place.

Also, as a person who lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years, I do not share your perspective on that city, either. You seem to be overindexing your perspective on the tourist experience in Hollywood. Hollywood is a very small part of Los Angeles, and it has always been the equivalent of the tacky tourist areas around the U.S., e.g., Times Square, the Las Vegas Strip, etc.

If California were a red state, his opinion would be completely opposite.

Ohio isn't a good tourist state or a good living state. My wife is from Ohio and every now and then she looks at housing prices in Ohio and says "we should move back near my family!" Then we visit again and 2 days later she says "God, I can't wait to get home."
Hollywood has always been a dump, it's a dirty place dumb tourists visit for some unknown reason. All of Ohio is a dump. Ugly, old, dirty brick buildings slowing being reclaimed by the earth.

LOL. Which explains why real estate prices in Ohio are so much higher than they are in Caifornia, and Cleveland is known as the "Mistake by the Lake." If Cleveland did not have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, query what one might do for entertainment there. Watch the sidewalks harden?

Based upon your lack of knowledge of Ohio, I am quite happy you are staying where you are. No need to import welfare recipients.

Conversely, I left Florida for California when Jeb Bush was governor, and I have also been very happy with that decision. So happy in fact that I do not feel compelled to insult the state, its institutions, or its residents on a regular basis.

On my end, California is an example of everything that is wrong with American politics. It's governor is a serious candidate for the Democratic nomination president. In terms of national politics, California has to be central to discussions and arguments as to where the country should go. in San Francisco, they built a portable John for the homeless and it cost $1.7 million. As far as I can see, among the general leftist people in San Francisco that is not a big issue. That type of waste and regulation is a huge issue for me. the schools in Los Angeles are horrendous and Los Angeles although spending huge amounts of money on the homeless has basically not expanded their fire prevention resources are coverage for 30 or 40 years. A lot of people without knowledge of California have no idea of how bad and crazy it is. Comparing California to Ohio in terms of education, Ohio is way better. for example, my son went to an upper end although not super upper end public high School and graduated with a 4.25 grade average. According to his counselor he was about 50th in his class. He received an 85% scholarship to a good Ohio school. You don't generally have opportunities like that that are affordable in california.

You seem like a good person and I am sorry that you took my criticisms personally. They were not meant to be personal but a general, sharp criticism of what California is and where it is headed.

I will add something that goes counter to my narrative. when we visited California three or four years ago, both of my children fell in love with UCLA and usc.

Yet, so much of the very sharp criticism that I have seen you aim at California is inaccurate. For example, your description of the Noe Valley public toilet facility in San Francisco is incorrect: the public toilet facility is permanent and cost approximately $200,000 to install. Critics have made the lack of public toilet facilities a political talking point, yet they also make the addition of public toilet facilities a talking point.

The schools in Los Angeles are not universally horrendous. It is the second largest school district in the nation, and it has, unsurprisingly, some of the best and worst performing schools. The top 4 public high schools in the LA metro area rank among the top 40 high schools nationally, with the top 3 being in the top 20 of all high schools in the nation. Yet, Californians do not need to attend these superlatively performing high schools to achieve outcomes comparable to your son. My partner and her two siblings attended a poor public high school in California and went on to earn cumulatively three bachelors degrees and four masters degrees from Cal States and two masters degrees from USC and NYU and a PhD from USC. The seven degrees from CSU were entirely free, as they all received full scholarships. The three degrees from USC and NYU, unsurprisingly, cost more than a quarter million dollars.

We have very direct knowledge of California and can say that the homeless situation, which really only impacts small sections of San Francisco and Los Angeles (as is the case with most large cities) has improved shockingly quickly and dramatically over the last ten years. Regarding fire prevention, of course the wildfires in LA last year were horrific and terrifying, but we who live here knew that the conditions with the hurricane force winds and the severe drought were an extreme act of nature that no fire-fighting resources were going to be able to contain. Generally speaking, we are very satisfied and impressed with our firefighting resources.

In general, people who do not live in California seem to have decided to tell horror stories about California for partisan political purposes. That is frustrating.

It depends how you define "politics." The most important influence on my decision was UCLA and UC Berkeley being ranked #1 and #2 in the field that I wanted to pursue for my doctorate. I also considered Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Georgia for similar reasons. If UW, Harvard, or Emory had been ranked #1, then I probably would have ended up in one of those states.

I grew up in Cleveland and intentionally left it. Columbus and Cincinnati are way better. I don't intend to defend Cleveland.
