I think Cal is going to want someone taller than 6-8 in the starting lineup.

First team
Hagans
Green
Johnson
Travis
Richards

Second team
Quickley
Baker
Herro
Washington
Montgomery

Starters

G Hagans
G Green
F Washington
F Travis
F Richards

Cal will probably start big. He has two near 7 footers at the 5. One will start. I think he goes with Richards to start the season because of experience and to keep Richards confident.

At the end of games, when it's winning time, I think Cal goes with:

G Hagans
G Green
F Johnson
F Washington
F Travis

With Quickley spelling the guards and Montgomery spelling the bigs.

PLATOON #1
PG: Green
SG: Quickly
SF: Johnson
PF: Washington
C: Montgomery

PLATOON #2
PG: Hagans
SG: Baker
W: Hero
PF: Travis
C: Richards

(Cue heads exploding)

I like where you are going. But I think it is unlikely.

I think minutes are much more important and informative than who starts. Just go ask the BCG PF Coury who started & played < 10mpg.
But since that was the question, I think the 5 starters will be (in order of likelihood) PJ, Travis, Green, Johnson, Hagans.
If any of them didn't make it, I think from most likely to least to start would be: Montgomery, Quickley, Herro, Richards, Baker. I don't necessarily think that will be how the minutes go though.
I see the minutes going (from most to least) PJ, Travis, Green, Hagans, Johnson, Richards, Montgomery, Quickley, Herro, (gap), Baker.

But, while I think it unlikely, I would love to see a 60/40 platoon, where 1 group plays 24min and the other group plays 16min. I'd be ok if it was 65/35 (26min or 14min).

Platoon #1 (24 mpg)
PG Hagans
SG Green
SF Johnson
PF1 Washington
PF2 Travis

Platoon #2 (16 mpg)
PG Quickley
SG Baker
SF Herro
PF Montgomery
C Richards

there's zero chance of richards seeing much more than if we need something grabbed from outer space....no way. he can't shoot and is crazy clumsy. i dont even wanna watch him dunk.....sheesh. he'll miss it

Most ignorant post of the month ^^^.
Did Richards have flaws, things he needs to work on this summer? Certainly!!!!
But he can't shoot? Really!
He made 61.6% of his FGs (if he had more attempts that would be the 5th best % at UK in the past 20 years). He made 71.8% of his FTs (that was 4th on the team).
How about his rebounding? He averaged 4.4/gm, which doesn't sound great. But given his 14.7 mpg, that translates to 9.0 reb/30min. How does that compare to other past FR? That is way better than Labissiere (6.0), better than Orton (7.5) & WCS (7.9) & Bam (8.0) & Johnson (8.2) & Jones (8.4), about the same as Noel (8.9), a little worse than Towns (9.5) & Davis (9.7), & worse than Randle (10.1), and everyone trails Cousins (12.6). Now in perspective, his rebounding was pretty good (he might ONLY trail Cousins if he didn't get all of those knocked out of his hands). So he only trails Cousins, Randle, Davis, & Towns.
What about blocked shots? 0.9/gm. Translates to 1.8 blk/30min which is decent as well.

Hagans (did not reclass to NOT start)
Quickley (41% in Nike circuit/ co MCAA shooting champ)
Johnson
Washington (didn't come back to come off bench)
Travis (wants to go pro, didn't come here to come off bench)

We will platoon, and I will dig up old post from the usual suspects whom swore we'd never do it again! Go BIG BLUE!

Maybe both Travis and Washington do start, but I bet Cal plays it so that at least one of then is in 100% of the time . That way we always have muscle on the floor. Can't afford to have both in foul trouble early against a tough opponent.
Same with NR and EJ..keep 1 7 footer in most of the time. I don't recall everyone's jump reach, but the 1st possession is worth a start and quick change just to get the tip.
(Does Richards or EJ out jump the shorter guys?)
I had the feeling last year that NR started for that reason and gave way to SKJ early.

That is a good question about the tap. Getting that probably gives you on average an extra 1/2 possession per game.

Quickley shot well vs high school level travel teams, that play no defense. Green shot well (39%) vs UK's schedule. Got to think he has the advantage.

I like Quade, but if he and IQ are even remotely close in the shooting category then IQ starts. Better defender, taller, faster, etc. It's a lovely problem to have!

If everyone performs as expected I would like to see the starters be determined by who we are playing. Good luck to everyone on our schedule trying to come up with a game plan for that when they don't have a clue who our starting five will be come gametime. Will never happen but would be fun to watch.

I just can't see Green not getting the nod early on. He was fitting in great with the team last year and then got injured a couple times.

Zero chance PJ doesn't start. Same for Travis.

So, the only ones up for debate are IQ, Johnson and Hagans.

Johnson is our only true 3 so he starts. Don't think you can sit Hagans.

I like Green IQ and Johnson or Green IQ and Hagans at the one thru three spots. Plenty of minutes for all four guys that would give you two good shooters and a guy who can get to the rim on the floor at all times. PJ, Travis and Montgomey at the four and five spot. That's the great thing about this roster plenty of options

We’ll play 8-10 guys, but we aren’t doing what we did in 2015. Certain guys should be playing significantly more than others.

When I say “starter” I mean one of your top five. One of the guys in the game when it matters.

Hagans is the best bet to be truly elite by the end of the year at guard. If we’re going to be as good as we hope to be, he needs to be good.

Johnson is easily the best fit at small forward, and like Hagans, his ceiling is higher than any of our other perimeter players, so he’s a starter in the preferred scenario where we end up being very good.

Washington and Travis our proven, even though they are very similar players. Montgomery seems to have the higher ceiling. Two of those guys will start. My guess is Travis and Washington as long as they defend to Cal’s standards. They are the tough physical guys Cal generally likes to go with.

My preferred last spot would go to whoever is the best remaining perimeter player. I could honestly see any of Quickley, Green, or Herro starting. If Quickley can shoot, he would probably be my choice, since he should be the best defender of that group.

We will do mass subs. Cal will package/call it something else but barring injury we'll have 9-10 guys playing tons of minutes. No 6-7 man rotation here. Let's ROLL!

If we need 3's:

G Quickley
G Green
G Herro
F Washington
F Travis

Three shooters, two great rebounders.

Love the versatility of this team!

We aren't going to platoon, it's just going to be a very deep rotation. ;-)

I am almost sure Cal will start PJ, Green and Richards. Don't know about the other two, but I think he will start a different five in the second half to keep everyone happy.
Doesn't matter all players are very good.

Maybe we could see a modified platoon?

First half

G Hagans(12)/Quickley(8)
G Green(12)/Baker(8)
F Johnson(12)/Herro(8)
F Washington(12)/Montgomery(8)
F Travis(12)/Richards(8)

Then play the best in the second half.

G Hagans(13)/Quickley(7)
G Green(12)/Quickley(8)
F Johnson(13)/Washington(7)
F Washington(6)/Montgomery(14)
F Travis(13)/Richards(7)

Washington- 25
Travis- 25
Johnson- 25
Hagans- 25
Green- 24
Quickley- 23
Montgomery- 22
Richards- 15
Herro- 8
Baker- 8

Thoughts?

No way a Top Ten recruit in Montgomery is going to come off the bench. Recruiting would suffer if that were to happen. Washington and Travis will have to Duke it out for who is first off the bench. People wanting them both to start are filling themselves. One of the reasons Richards still started last year.

Amazing how much changes in 8 months. I don't want to call anyone out, but some of these are hilarious.
