This is the first photo I've seen that shows the size of Old Main Dorm. Compare it to the size of the cafeteria. The west side football stands are still under construction. Hull Dorm had not been built. McCarthy Gym hadn't been built

wow! that thing was massive. i wonder what it would be like if it were still there - how campus would be different. mccool and the union would be in different places.

So when they say its the 100th year of DWS, what part are we talking is 100 years old? Or is it just the site that's 100 years?

If you look at the gym (right side, just above center of photo) there is a white dot that is actually the scoreboard for the baseball field. Dorman Hall is there now.

The Drill Field side of the Union is about where Old Main sat. There is a much wider space between the Union and the Cafeteria.

Architecture building is there. AT that time it was used for cattle auctions or as a mechanic shop.

"Old Main" Images of a Legend

If you have not seen it, you should find a copy of "Old Main" Images of a Legend. Published 1995. The history is amazing and the photographs
even better. There is one where they superimposed the footprint of Old Main on the campus as it was in 1995.

Didn't it encompass the drill field?

Ummm... The drill field is in that picture. From North to South, Old main ran from about where the north side of the Union is now, south to about where the Main Entrance to McCool Hall is now. East to west it ran from the west side of the drill field to about 30-40 feet in front of the cafeteria (enough room for a sidewalk and a little grass on either side in between them).

Here's a panorama of the main campus 100 years ago. It's taken from about where Allen hall is now.

Good call - have you seen the mechanic shop/modern day architecture school overlays? Those are fantastic photographs. I might need to look that up.

What's amazing is that these buildings look timeless... Architecturally speaking. In the big campus expansion in the early through late 60s, we just threw up buildings that looked complete **** (Allen, suttle & the boomerangs, etc). Most of which have been torn down, or will be soon. This picture looks spectacular.

Also, was the rail depot moved? In this picture, it's sitting where the front steps of swalm are.
