Mississippi and Alabama are currently vaccinating those 75+. Florida, and some other states, are 65+ right now (and Florida has a lot more older people than either Al or Miss).

Did Florida get more vaccinations per capita?

Here

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi State Department of Health had a vaccine distribution plan in place that has been significantly altered in the last few days – especially in the last 24 hours. Neither the county health department drive-through sites, nor the UMMC vaccine scheduling website was designed to accommodate the monumental surge we are currently experiencing. At this time, we have no additional vaccine, and every appointment is tied to an actual vaccination.
The Mississippi State Department of Health hopes to receive a large shipment of vaccine in mid-February that should help put additional shots in people’s arms. We understand the frustration brought on by this sudden change of plans. We will certainly keep all Mississippians updated regarding additional vaccine.
Mississippians should understand that we can only vaccinate residents based on vaccine availability. We will open additional vaccination appointments as we receive more vaccine.
In the meantime, all Mississippians – whether vaccinated or not – should continue to follow protective guidelines. Especially avoid any social gatherings. And always wear a mask.UMMC has provided a comment on its Facebook page regarding the Vaccine Scheduler.

Here's some help. There are hospitals etc. not on that website who are vaccinating. Check with your local medical facility and don't fool with the site unless you're in those areas on there. I was able to schedule myself and my mother with no problem by contacting my local medical facility.

Explain how they messed up the process. Just curious.
The added in several groups this week well before before it was planned to do so. Those groups were supposed to be added mid-Feb. As a direct result we are out of vaccine and lot of people in the initial groups who wanted appointments who haven't been able to get them now can't.

I think they are all tied into the Department of Health for distribution.

Mississippi opened it up to 65+ and those of any age with prexisting conditions this week. That is the vast majority of the states population. We now have none for anybody that wasn't already scheduled.

They can't schedule what they don't have.

Places have it though. I know of a few places where I'm at that do. I have "inside knowledge" on some of it, so I see things others might not, but everyone isn't out of vaccine. I don't care what MDH says.

Alabama seems to be a mixed bag.

75+ appointments officially start the 18th, along with some other categories from group 1b (like first responders).
However, the local CBS had video of Haleyville school teachers being vaccinated today. They're in 1b, but have not been cleared for appointments to start on the 18th.
The official story is the local hospital had extra doses, so they organized distributing those to the teachers. I don't know if they already took care of all their first responders and citizens 75+ or if this was just someone's local decision that fit their capabilities.

That makes me wonder about the second dose l. Do they prioritize second doses or new ones? It’s no good if you don’t get the second one.

My 80+ year old parents got the 1st shot first thing this AM. I went to the site and waited on the queue to see if I could schedule the 2nd shot appointment. Went through the screen and clicked 2nd shot appointment. It asked for 1st shot date. I put in todays date for my parents 1st shot and it said not valid. I'm guessing today's date hasn't updated in their system. I tried Monday 1/11 as 1st shot date to see what would happen and it took me to the locations showing the date an appointment was available and all drive thru sites in the state had appointments for the 2nd shot. It didn't let you pick what date you could take the 2nd shot but assigned a date based on your 1st shot date and phifzer or moderna 1st shot. It looks like the 2nd shot is factored into the supply and appointment schedule. If you do get a 1st shot at the health dept drive thru site. Wait a day or two for the system to update showing you got the 1st shot and attempt to set an appt for the 2nd shot.

Alabama should do that as well, but I've not seen any sign of it going that way. When asked what the next distribution phase will be, they say they haven't determined it yet. The latest I know of is 75+, along with policemen and other first responders (fire, ambulance, etc.).

That's quite a change. Do they virtually triage your prexisting conditions and base your spot in the queue on how serious they thing your health conditions are?

Everyone was too busy screaming "WE NEED TO REOPEN THE ECONOMY!"

Also, we suck at central planning. We would have been better off if they just let doctors offices order the vaccines like they do for every other vaccine.

Well, that way the doctor would have jurisdiction to decide who gets the shot. Plus, I doubt most of the doctors would have the cold storage facilities to keep the vaccines.

Heard somewhere was fining health facilities that gave the injection to unqualified persons, and it was a pretty stiff fine. Of course, the government should fine themselves for vaccinating members of congress, regardless of age ....

They certainly don't advertise such a thing, and are violating state health department orders.

When you say "drive thru sites", is that to be taken literally, meaning you drive to a location, stay in your car, get the shot, then drive off?

It's my understanding that they require either a 15 or 30 minute waiting time after the shot to make sure you don't have a serious allergic reaction. Is that requirement waived?

Yes. The National Guard handles it. they do a very good job with it. You still have to wait but you do it in your car.

My parents had to wait the specified time before they were allowed to leave. If you do get a 1st shot you will need the info on the card they give you with your patient # ect. to schedule the 2nd shot. So have that info handy before you get in the queue on the web site to schedule the 2nd appt.

I was persistent from 8 until just after noon today and got scheduled for next Tuesday in Leflore Co. More luck using laptop than cell phone. Phone would refresh page every time screen went off and set me back in queue but laptop stayed on and eventually worked. At one point it said vaccines were unavailable but apparently people canceled and a date opened up. Talked with someone else and they tried getting appointment in closer location but had to cancel their current appointment first. I’m assuming this is why appointments are opening randomly.
