MS New COVID Cases

On July 31st, the 7 day rolling average on new daily COVID cases for Mississippi was 1,298 cases per day. After today (8/15), the 7 day rolling average on new daily COVID cases is 731cases per day. That’s a decrease by about 44% in a little more than two weeks.

Should be able to get below 500 new cases per day by the end of the month.

Herd immunity kicking in....if CDC estimates are right that the actual umber of people that have the virus is 10 times the positive cases that would be 700K or about 24% of the MS population....

So are you saying the mask mandates are working?

It could be masks. Or it could be the virus running it’s course. Or it could be a little of both. This is a novel concept given the current state of this country- but the answer may be somewhere in the middle.

I’m no expert, so I don’t pretend to have the answer to that question. Frankly, I really don’t care what it is. Who is “right” makes no difference. The numbers are moving in the right direction, and that’s all that matters.

I will continue to wear my mask though, for as long as they ask me to.

The middle? What the 17 is that?***

This is looking better. We’ll see what the situation is like at the end of the month. I hope it gets a lot lower.

Most of the colleges & universities will have had on campus classes (Jones is starting the semester online) for a week or two by that time.

I have two coworkers who tested positive by a local hospital distributing tests at our job. They both then went to a local clinic and both tested negative. I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody knows what the 17 is going on.

I believe it to be this. It's the only thing that makes sense in light of all the data we see. You have a few here that talked about Sweden. So I started following. And if we had it to do over again, I would have much rather followed their plan.

Things is we had no idea. It is new. So....

Schools too, we will see in a month or so. If this holds then WONDERFUL!

More spewing to try to have something to say on a board. More absolute horsesh**.

Serious question, were they distributing tests or administering them? Are the new saliva tests being doled out in bulk already?

Herd immunity by definition is influenced by human behavior

The more distance you place between people (including "distance" created by masking), the lower the herd immunity number becomes. It's very possible we are getting close to that number naturally with the extra boost provided by populations wearing masks, distancing, etc.

That's what science and common sense say. Folks hell bent on a political win one the other hand may argue otherwise....

I don’t think anyone was lying. Like 87 said, it’s probably two different types of the tests and one is more sensitive than the other. It happens.

The CDC cut back testing requirements and quarantine time frames due to overly sensitive tests that produce a false positive. That's month old news. Our crappy tests have been the greatest hindrance in this whole thing.

Probably the one thing Sweden should have done was to better protect the elderly and vulnerable at the beginning...that would have substantially cut back their deaths.
Diabetes is turning out to be one of the biggest common factors of those who the virus is killing... unfortunately Mississippi probably leads the world in Diabetes per capita.

Like I have said, there is probably some benefit of the mask if worn properly, but trying to claim that is the sole reason for the decline.. broader data just doesn’t support it.

California is still close to their peak after 6 weeks of a mandate. (Let me guess, they aren’t as likely to wear a mask as somebody from MS is****)

Georgia is on the decline with ER visits with Covid like symptoms half of where they were July 12. Hospitalizations trending down and positive testing rate declining. (Let me guess, they are all wearing masks without a mandate****)

Florida is seeing a steady decline without a mandate. You have many examples of other states and even counties where you could have “evidence” that they work.. or not.

The data point that seems most consistent in the start of the decline is virus saturation. Although since we aren’t testing everybody, it isn’t exact, but when you start getting in the range of 25000 cases per million, the curve flattens and then start down.. View attachment 17292

California is still under 20k, although since cases are concentrated more in the southern half, you can expect that you will see a decline in that region fairly soon.

I am not saying don’t wear a mask etc, but it would be very hard to prove based on real word examples that it is the main cause for a decline.

I should have used the word administered, my fault. The regular nasal swab. Both tests. Obviously I wasn’t there when both guys got both their tests- just what they told me.

The US’ testing is still a mess. Here’s Bill Gates on his recent discussions on how to fix some of our issues:

Ok.. last chart. Look at Hawaii. They have done everything in the world to “stop the spread.” It worked, until it didn’t. The story is similar to other island nations. New Zealand is back on lockdown and the Bahama’s cases are spiking and the borders are closed again. If you apply one singular data point to each locality and want to use it as “proof” you should have consistent results all things being relatively equal.

The best thing we could've done is just protect the elderly and people with diabetes and let the rest go about as normal. The average age of death is like 78. Makes no sense at all shutting down the whole country when most of the work force are asymptomatic when they get it.
