The first one that came to mind was Chris Minerich knocking down Tim Brasic's pass in the endzone to preserve JCA's 56-50 victory over RB on the last play of the game in 2001 playoffs.

Mike Alstott in a playoff game up North somewhere. Some us this may be off because of MEMORY!! but JCA played this very good team on a snowy cold snow covered field day. Mike ( already pretty famous from the Chicago papers who would later name him player of the yr.) took a pitchout to the right, was tripped on an ankle tackle and kept running with his left hand on the ground for support for about 5 yards, righted himself, broke some tackles and was off down the right side. Defender caught up to him and he stiff armed him down and then he himself started slipping and sliding. Somehow he kept his balance and scored. I have never to this day seen another whole opposing team of fans stand and applaud another player. They did for Mike that day!

Ben Eberle game winning FG for Holy Cross over St.Viator to give the Crusaders the CMC Red Title in Week 8 of the 2000 season.

Viator had Brett Basanez at QB, while HC had Garrett Wolfe at RB.

Crusaders went 9-0 during the regular season. They beat Ridgewood in Rd 1, beat Jerseyville in Rd 2, but were undone by Santos Gonzalez and Pontiac in the Quarterfinals. 😢

Leonard Bowl I 2010. SHG with a 50 something game conference winning streak. Rochester leads SHG 13-10 with less than a minute remaining. SHG at the end of an 18-play drive has a 4th down inside Rochester’s 20. After several timeouts, an SHG receiver looks open for a second over the middle at the 5 yard line when Rochester’s Jon Gilson closes and tips the ball away. Absolute bedlam on the Rochester side of the field, much of the crowd stayed well after the end of the game.

All... There are hundreds for me. This one I remember well and is one of my many favorites. Now Metamora* in 2006 came into this semi final game with an average of over 50 points a game. The Cyclone defense was one of the best I have ever seen. The final in this game was 19-6. The six the Redbirds scored was just one of those things. A bit of an over run by one on the defense and some others just not in the area. But they were lock down that year. Coach Leonard let off the gas as well in the second half or the score for the Cyclones could of been higher. Anyway here is the short video on one of SHG's scores. SHG went on to win state the following week finishing 14-0 for the second straight year. Ratsy

Yes indeed! This was the first play that came to mind when I read the thread title, and bingo, yours was the first reply with said play. What an incredible play to end the best game ever played in IHSA playoff history. And yes, I was there (for real)!

Marty Calkins picking up a fumble and scampering 50 yards or so to win the State Championship for Gordon Tech in 1980. It was the first state championship for a north side Catholic school. I had friends on that team and I was genuinely excited and happy to see them win it.

Sean Mc Nulty putting a lick on the LA QB that set the tone for the most unexpected Maine South championship in 2016. This team nearly lost its first round game to West Aurora and caught fire after that. They avenged a regular season loss to LA in a great championship game.

Yes my son was playing the other DE spot. He had a couple sacks earlier in the game.
I'm jealous. After two girls and 5 empty years my wife started bugging me about an son to play JCA football. Reluctently agreed and was blessed with a son. He went to Minooka and ran Cross Country. No good deed goes unpunished!! :):) We are considering adding him back into the Will though.

For a really dramatic finish, we have to go back to the '63 Mustangs, still on 63rd Street, coached by the legendary Ed "Jarhead" Buckley. Four-hour practices in the sweltering heat with no water allowed. Guys puked, guys fainted, guys quit. But the ones who stayed were tough--not merely football tough but Ed Buckley tough. They outscored opponents 348-60 as they rolled to the Catholic League Championship game against Loyola. Down 15-8 late in the game, Rita scored and then went for two, they went for it all, they went for glory. Of course they made it and the team was crowned the National Champs by the A.P. and the National Sports News Service.

Rita was not the first or last Illinois team to be named the National Champ. Here's a rundown of the state's winners.

1900 Moline
1902 Hyde Park
1903 Lincoln Park
1908 Englewood
1910 Oak Park
1911 Oak Park
1912 Oak Park
1913 Oak Park
1937 Austin
1941 Leo
1963 Rita
1985 ESL

In the '70s and '80s, Cincinnati Moeller under Gerry Faust had a run of four or five championships. Massilon Ohio also had some great teams during that period. In the '90s and beyond, California schools like Bosco, De La Salle, and Mater Dei rose to national prominence, with DLS winning it no fewer than a dozen times.

Blue Ruin is older than me😂
Yeah, I was the water boy on that '02 Hyde Park team. Pressured by my mother, a fanatical Catholic, I reluctantly transferred to St. Cyril, which was down the block, and later had my diploma revised to reflect the name change to Mount Carmel.

Yeah but that’s not this thread that you just high jacked with an off topic response. It’s most remembered play!!!

Tyler Knight was the QB.

MS RB Matt Perez breaking (8-10) tackles to score against GBS in the playoffs. It was amazing. Probably have at least 10 other plays but that came to mind first.

St. Rita beats Brother Rice 51-48 in 6 overtimes

It was the most draining game I ever attended on the fans from both teams. As coach Nye states it was a shame either team got a loss.

ADDED: although not in the below article, I have been reminded, the winning score was on 4th and 3. Coach Kuska decided not to kick the game tying field goal on 4th down and decided to go for the win in the 6th overtime.

Not a crazy awesome play but the last play of seeing ACS beat Driscoll in the 2008 quarterfinals and the fans storming the feel. Remember it like it was yesterday. Still feels surreal that ACS stopped the Driscoll dynasty.

ACS vs Driscoll 2008 - Full Game

I remember the week before that game when Driscoll made a goalline stand against Mendota last play of game to keep the streak alive. Heck of a game, and that last play was a great one too!

Another play I’ll keep with NCIC love, in 06 Mendota played @ Dixon, game was a low scoring slugfest, Mendota took the lead late, but Dixon drove all the way down the field to around 3 or 5 yard line with minimal time remaining. Dixon lined up for a FG to win on the right hash…. But MISSED IT to give the Trojans a 1 point win on the road.

Dixon went on to 3rd round of 5A playoffs and Mendota to 2nd rd 4A.

What are you talking about? That one play made a big impression on an impressionable 15-year-old.

Another bizarre remark. My comment was in accordance with the theme. And one post was about great teams spawned by Illinois. Aren't you always going on about rooting for Illinois teams?
Not bizarre. Reading the subject line it said most remembered play not game or teams.
