When i read the thread title I assumed it was going to be about mt carmels win.
If the thread was titled " the Most impressive comeback" Mt Carmel is definitely a top contender, but it was almost equally impressive how they almost managed to dig themselves a whole of "no return" with one of the most talented teams (on paper) ever to grace an IL high school football field (supposedly).

I was thinking Granite City in 1986, when East Side had a 40+game streak and was defending national champs. The Hogan Twins took them down! Then Althoff beat GC two weeks later ... mayhem, I tell ya!
I remember meeting a guy from Granite City back in the mid 80’s. I wasn’t the worldly man I am now. I honestly had never heard of the place. When he told me Granite City was in Illinois, I nearly passed out with shock. His twang was something I figured from the Deep South. Oh and he was a white guy.
STL has always been a hotbed for footie, and even more granularly, Granite City and Collinsville were hot pockets in the market.He told me that GC was a soccer power. I had barely heard of soccer being played in Illinois. Eireog is a much more in touch fella nowadays

Eireog tells lies but not about this. A few years later ‘88 a guy named Roy Houghton from Ireland scored a goal against England in the European championships tournament to beat those other guys. Eireog was now a casual soccer fan. I remain a very casual soccer fan.
