I honestly don’t know how coaches do it these days. Kids as well as parents feel like they are entitled to something. I wonder what Wendell and his mom are going to say if the Bulls draft over him. Whose fault will it be then?
On a side note, I met the mother and father at the hotel bar in Bloomington Indiana before the Indiana game. I had about a 5 minute conversation with the father. He seemed like a nice guy but in those 5 minutes I found out both parents did not have jobs as they were traveling around the country watching their son play for the best program in the nation.
They were riding the coat tails of their son waiting for him to get drafted. I would have to believe they took out a loan or saved a whole lot of money to be able to do that.
Anyway, I just wish the new age kids would welcome competition instead of transferring or complaining when things do not go their way.

Carter was always a heavy duke lean, to the point where it wouldn’t have shocked anyone if he popped for us in the summer of 2016. He officially committed in November during the early signin period. Wellllll before the thought of Bagley reclassifying and the destination being Duke was even a thought.
If she/he wanted "guarantees" they should of waited as long as possible, still wouldn't have helped with the reclassification being at such a later date then a normal clear recruiting target for the upcoming year. It may be misguided, but their contention was Duke was their clear choice, knowing that he was their featured big coming in. They now feel that Bagley was always in Duke's plan, and if that was the case, he would of taken other offers.

I believe the university pays for the parents to travel to every game

Sounds like some revisionist history. Or sour grapes. Or flat out selfish and self absorbed, at best it’s a her problem. It worked out just fine- maybe instead of averaging 13.1 points and 9 boards he averages 17 or 18. He still gets drafted in the same place at best in that scenario- I’m not sure what her goal is here other than to play a victim and blame everyone else constantly. I stood up for her general POV on the OAD when she came out a month or two ago, she had a few good points even though she clearly doesn’t know how to articulate them. Bottom line is any anti duke people will harp on this and use it to negatively recruit- by all means go for it. I’d expect nothing else, but it changes nothing and I’m hindsight neither party would have done anything differently.

The harsh reality is most parents, guardians, AAU coaches, etc...subscribe to this mindset. There is no other to recruit. You must tell 5 and 4 star players they will be showcased FIRST!

Duke did not make Carter's billboard as big as Grayson's and Marvin!!! It was a problem.

Sadly, there is no way to get around the Carter families of the world!!!!

Parents may be their way of getting what they want to say out without actually saying it lol who knows!! Sad. I’d sit the bench at Duke for 4 years and be satisfied. I don’t get it . You come to Duke for a year, then you make millions the next! Your not satisfied .....? Ask anybody (most) what you would do for 1 year knowing the next you make millions...hmmmmm lol anything and thank them! And that doing something they don’t love!!! Not basketball!! Ooooo:(

You're attempting to make this rational/logical. This is a business! Look at Kansas with the Lawson family and what occurred at Memphis. Tubby Smith lost his job because he did what K did, recruited at the same position of the two sons and fell out with Dad!

Once the Carter family knew Wendell's draft position they were going to act a fool! Sadly, this backlash does not always work, see LaGerald Vick from Kansas. His mom is probably regretting and singing Coach Self praises right now!!!!

Deal with it Duke fans. It's the chance we take when we bring in the elites. I'm glad he came to Duke. We were a better team because of Wendell.
None of us should be surprised that there's been griping from a few parents.

If any of the families have any legit griping, it's the Duval's.

My son is 2. We go to my nephews tee ball games and already at the age of 5, you can see parents acting like their kid is the next Babe Ruth. One kid's dad pulled him off the team (of 4 and 5 year olds playing tee ball) because it was not "competitive enough." Kinda grosses me out that it will only get worse with parents like Mrs. Carter out there thinking their kid is the only one that matters. It's a TEAM SPORT lady !

I wish him the best, but heaven forbid he get injured in the NBA. The NBA will not keep him around if he is of no use to any teams. Then maybe she will see the NBA isn't all roses and tulips.

True, but they're the hardest to deal with. A coach is more handcuffed dealing with them. A little easier benching a 4 star, or telling a non one and done he's not getting p.t. because he's not cutting it.
It's not even a comparison anymore. Duke does have a better leg to stand on, because of exposure, and the fact Duke is freaking huge, but K does have his hands full as compared to years ago.

I wish more fans knew and realized what you are saying. Sadly, Coach K may have to be more of a figure head and the assistants, Jon, Nate, Nolan and Chris are the voices!

The game is dirty and so many deals are made that the average 'good' fan may not want to know.

I think it’s simple. You think your good enough to come to Duke then come. All you need to be guaranteed is that scholarship. It’s on you after that what happens. Stop the blame for (((your))) decisions and actions. I think the kids and parents high school duration is making them to far up on cloud 9. (Attention) ...Coaches having to make promises???? how about change the dang rule!!!!! and be done with alllllll this mess! Lol (most of it)

Check Twitter. Wendell has a brief back and forth with Dick Vitale where he says the interviewer basically totally misquoted his mom. Funny because the other day, Wendell says “my mom speaks her mind and that’s just how she is.” The spinning has started.

Welcome back to yet another “Duke Basketball Summer.”

This isn't surprising, unfortunately. A family member of mine has known a top ten recruit for years (through their church) that we both were hoping would come to Duke this upcoming year (He ended up going to a hated rival arghhh). The recruit's father said his wife and Mrs. Carter got in a heated argument during AAU ball because she called this recruit a "bum". This talking crap seems to have always been an issue with her.

I get that this story is absolutely unverifiable, but stuff like what she recently told reporters simply backs it up every time I hear Mrs. Carter speaking.

I’m not there yet. But he’s making this season harder and harder on himself. There’s by the time the season starts, this will be an afterthought in the media realm, but there will be players out there, Duke or not, who are going to want to take some shots (much like Lonzo this past season). Plus, if he starts struggling mightily, this will get drudges up.

I wish him the best. He gave so much to the team. And like he and his mom pointed out, he didn’t pout. He played hard. Hopefully this is just a footnote in what is a nice career. I don’t know that we’ll be seeing him at next year’s K Academy though.

Looks like Wendell cleared everything up. Why is this a story again??

I wanna know if Tre Jones and Cam Reddish are back to playing actual basketball?

UK has passed Duke as the new Vegas favorites to win the title. Where all my “I’m tired of all the preseason hype” people at????

We be right here. I'd love for someone else to be the favorite. Wasn't Duke the favorite the last two seasons?

Let someone else be ranked #1 too. The last time the preseason #1 team won the title was 09.

I wouldn't say he cleared anything up. Let's verify what was really said and compare it to what they are claiming she said. How hard would that be? Saying that his mother didn't say what they said she did without giving us the context of what was supposedly said doesn't clear anything up. I just want to say said one more time before I move on.

It is a story, because Mrs Carter has to give her unsolicited opinions that happen to be disrespectful and misrepresenting towards Duke.

Duke was the favorite the last 2 seasons. We had been the favorites next season, but with the Reid Travis announcement, UK is +600 and Duke is +650. Once we beat UK, I’m sure it will change.

Ironically, 2010 and 2015, UK was the preseason favorites. So let’s hope this stays.
Duke, as has been endlessly harped about on here, has performed poorly as the preseason favorite. I take zero emphasis on if we’re the favorite or not and how that will correlate to our season. UNC, for example, performs very well as the favorite, 2009 and 2005. It’s been a long time since UNC was a preseason favorite lol, gotta go back to 2009.

I would prefer not to be the favorites anyway after being many folks early #1 last two seasons.

Same here Hart! Let UK have all the pressure and hype of being preseason no 1 like Duke for the past two seasons. Duke will just be in the background quietly doing their own thing until March!:D Maybe Duke will take away their no. 1 status on Nov. 6th.

There are two things that jump out at me after reading this entire thread:

First, many people on here seem to be interchangeably using Wendell Carter and his mother. To my knowledge, Mrs. Carter seems to be the one making the inflammatory comments yet many on here seem to be using those comments to disparage Wendell and project feelings of entitlement on to him.

Second, I find it very ironic that quite a few folks in this thread who, in previous threads, have expressed pretty conservative leanings are so quick to pooh-pooh the notion that Mrs. Carter was misquoted.
