More surprising disappointment so far, Scott or Fred?

I’m still behind both of these guys...But, I’m really surprised and extremely disappointed with the teams they’ve put on the field/court so far. Who could have imagined when Moos made these two hires that we’d be seeing these types of poor performances in year two and three... Not me!

It shouldn't be real surprising considering there's absolutely no accountability coming from the AD office.

Both. Frost seems more lost though. Fred took over much worse situation and it’s only year 2. If Fred struggles again next year like this then it would be even.
Millions of dollars for like 10 wins this year between the two programs is bad.

Pretty good answer IMO. I probably had more faith in Fred getting it turned around... until last night.

I’m no expert on his system, but it seems like he doesn’t have guys who can shoot it well enough from deep. And whose fault is that? These are all his guys.

I’m not surprised at basketball. Tim Miles was a disaster and I don’t think we have a realistic chance of being noticeably better until year 3. BiG TeN is a tough place to rebuild from scratch.

Frost is a little surprising. But I do feel like we are headed in the right direction overall even if it doesn’t show in the W-L record. He still has some things to improve upon as a coach fo sho

I'd be willing to give Fred a hell of a lot longer leash. Tim Miles wrecked this program at the end and basically we fully flipped the roster outside of Thor and he is terrible. Fred can coach, just needs time to get some dudes in. These guys have barely played together and it is going to take some time.

Also, the Big 10 is probably the best league right now. The rebuild is not going to be easy when almost every night you play a highly ranked opponent. Our second halves need to get better, but I don't think we are as awful as people think we are.

Frost is definitely the bigger disappointment. Year 3 and his team looks like the most undisciplined team in the country. Maybe that's what happens when you try the athletes today run a program. It's not the same work ethic and drive the guys had in the 90's. Luckily for Fred most of the state hardly notices NU has a basketball team. I'm not sure you have a choice but let the Fred experiment run out. What do you have to lose we have sucked forever. We hired the peoples choice for 3 of the men's main programs and so far two are not panning out. If fred gets a guy or two in the league it will help him start building something.

Fair question. What athletic department is getting less return on investment than Nebraska?

I’d say Frost has been the larger disappointment so far, mainly because some of the things that are more “fixable” (Special Teams, Penalties, Turnovers, poor adjustments) continue to happen in year 3, just as they did in year 1.

NU hoops is probably a tic better this year than last. I say that because at least NU beat the “directional” schools this season, rather handily, instead of losing to them like last year. And, there are a couple of players - not nearly enough - but a couple, that are probably B1G caliber. I’m not sure we could say that last year. Still, they are hopelessly outmanned pretty much every game in the B1G. Will the two highly ranked Freshmen be enough to move the needle next year?

I think you can turn around a basketball team more quickly because the rosters are smaller. Maybe that’s what he was getting at
I agree with that. But Frost goes into games being more talented (according to recruiting rankings) about 80 percent of the time. Nebraska football has 5 national championships. Basketball has never even won an NCAA game. I do think the excuses for our basketball program are gone since we have facilities. We just don’t have tradition. However, football has it all.

Frost - Neb plays in the big ten west - there is not a university in that division where Neb has any significant tangible disadvantages that would hinder it from merely competing at a competent level

despite the above, over the last 3 years Neb is the only school in the division to finish in the bottom 3 each year. They are also the only school to not have played in a bowl the last 3 years.

Moos made two great hires, because Husker Nation wanted it and even demanded it. I figured Frost would do a lot better than he has, but I was never all in with Hoiberg. I've kept mostly to myself, but I just don't see the logic in what he's trying to do. He's a better coach than Miles. Doc's a good coach and Hoiberg has him sitting next to him. But their high risk recruiting strategy is doing them in. Year after year of new guys who may or may not assimilate into a good team is not going to cut it in the Big 10. And the irony of all of this is that local talent has never been better. The best Husker teams historically had a mix of local H.S. talent, out of state recruits and a couple jucos/transfers. Keep the kids around a while. Get them to accept their roles. Build something.

Frost by far. It isn’t even close. Husker bball is one of the most dreadful programs in division 1. Will take years to make something of it.

Tougher to win in football at Nebraska? Lol. Wrong.

I meant in general. An 18 year old Basketball player is more ready to play from day 1, therefore you can build a good team faster. In football it usually takes 2-3 years to get the guys in and get them to be ready physically.

BOTH guys IMO, inherited terrible situations with their rosters. Miles's contract situation killed recruiting and Riley just plain failed to bring in the right kind of guys. BOTH programs were a ground up rebuild. I thought both would be able to turn things around quicker than they have. Clearly that first group of transfers Fred brought in aren't all that we had hoped. I know some guys think coaching stability isn't important, but I think we hired some good guys and now we have to try to give them plenty of time to build programs. For every ONE school who strikes gold by churning coaches, there's a hundred who fail miserably. We'll see if hiring the "name" guys was the right move but I think it's at least a 5 year deal for both.

An 18 year old sometimes is ready to play day one if you're getting the top players. Otherwise most need a year or two in a basketball program to develop and mature. Teams who can't recruit elite talent need to be able to keep guys in their program for 3-4 years and develop them in order to compete in basketball IMO.

I think Fred realizes what you're saying. They've been beating the bushes in the high school ranks but Nebraska basketball is a tough sell. We've had too much turmoil and failure at NU. We need to have a head coach in place and get kids to camp with them at NU when they're in middle school. Yes you can build a program quicker in basketball, but in order to land area guys we have to develop those relationships and that is especially true with Creighton up the road.

Well Husker fans got the two guys they all wanted. Now what? We suck in both sports.

Frost is by far the bigger disappointment because heading into year 4 we may be worse than when he arrived. The only thing we have to hang our hats on is pre season hype which for three years has been complete BS from Frost. Nothing on the field exudes confidence heading into next season.

Like it or not how many wins do you realistically see in 2021, four? I really hope for major improvements but reality tells me it will just be more of the same.

I don’t think Frost seems lost (just because he isn’t doing things the way you want doesn’t mean he’s lost) and I’m not sure Fred took over a worse situation. Miles teams were competitive and had actually had back to back winning seasons prior to Fred taking over. Fred chose to completely blow up the roster. It is usually a pretty quick process to flip a basketball roster. I like Fred a lot and was ecstatic when he was hired, but I am shocked how bad we are right now.

I've said we'll get bowl eligible next fall. I'll stick by that. We have to get more consistent QB play.

Basketball you can have 3 good players and turn the program around quickly. Freshman can play and contribute more early than in football. Football just way more players, coaches, etc. The B10 it is a hard league to be young and good in football. Both have been disappointing so far but I like that they're both here.

Well when you look at the roster he inherited you should be able to see why Fred blew it up. BTW, 2 guys including what would have been by far the best returner got kicked off the team before Miles got fired. Fred had nothing and he knew it.

I guess for me it would be Frost. The on field product speaks for it self in how ****** he has done. What is of greater concern about Frost is how he give these BS excuses after losses and also more glaring is that it seems he and or his staff, or both are not a very good at evaluating talent.

Who knows what happens with Fred. You can tell he is a polished professional in how he deals with the media and I think he knows what he is doing. Maybe?? It just really seems like Nebraska basketball is where coaching careers go to die. It would be really nice to see Fred catch fire and have some success and then transition into an AD for Nebraska.

How can you see what Hoiberg is building and not what Frost is? I like Hoiberg and I think he will be fine if we support him and give him time, but right now what do you see? We had 20 points at halftime last night and 3 assists for the whole game, against a middle of the pack B1G team. With Frost, we have lost too many close game because of self inflicted mistakes, but it’s not like we are million miles away like the basketball team.

We better be, I mean good gawd that will be 4 years of his recruits and we’re having doubts if he can muster up 6 wins. The schedule is brutal though, but still. We definitely didn’t make any overall improvements in 2020 from 2019. This will be the biggest off season for Frost if it’s going to work out.

We were right there with the 2nd and 3rd best teams in conference this year. It’s not where I want to be either, but it’s not a million miles away like the basketball team.

For someone to say they can see what Hoiberg is building, but not Frost is crazy. I watched the last football game and thought, “OK this is what we want to do, this is how we can win football games.” It would take an awfully creative mind to watch last nights BB game and say, “I see what we are building here, this is going to be great”. Hoiberg is going to have to rebuild this whole roster, again. We have maybe two or three players that could be role players on a good team. I think Fred can get it done if we support him and give him time, but it’s been really bad so far and basketball is a sport where you can usually turn it around pretty quick.

The big ten west will be especially crappy next year - absolutely no reason Neb shouldn’t win or finish 2nd if Frost is even a tiny fraction of a competent football coach

in addition to the west teams Neb plays the returning bottom 2 teams in the east

8 wins minimum and then the Iowa like celebrations can ensue ... a slightly above average coach in their 4th year easily wins 9 with how weak that schedule is

The talent level of our players is night and day different than when Hoiberg took over.

Do we truly feel like the football team is more talented today than when Frost got here? Sure they’ve recruited ‘stars’ well, but what about the actual talent we see on the field??

For me I wasn't really expecting much from Fred, mainly because it is Nebraska basketball. Like I said this is where basketball coaching careers come to die. Nebraska basketball is so much easier to tune out than football. Years of getting your dick knocked in the dirt and consistently have 8-10 minute scoring droughts in game have had that affect on me.

For Frost at the end of the day his record speak volumes about what he has accomplished, or more importantly what he has not accomplished. No wins vs ranked teams, no rivalry wins, losing conference record, not qualifying for a bowl game. The losses and who they were to is just bad. He lost to Colorado twice, once with a coach that was fired at the end of the yearn and once to a first year coach. The Purdue loss when they used their 2nd and 3rd string QB's last year was painful. Losing to Illinois this year when they decide to fire Lovie at the end of the year. Two loses to Minnesota, two losses to NW.

I want to see Nebraska succeed, and Frost to succeed, but I am not going to take the Branch Davidian mentality and just ignore the f*&king burning compound. Show me you can WIN a game you are not suppose to as and underdog, show me you can WIN a game against a rival, especially a division rival. Damn it just find a way.
