Sacha Killeya-Jones to be Granted Full Release

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s basketball forward Sacha Killeya-Jones will transfer from UK, head coach John Calipari announced Monday.

Killeya-Jones will be granted a full release with no restrictions.

“The past two years at Kentucky have been an amazing journey and I want to thank all of my coaches, teammates and fans who made it possible,” Killeya-Jones said. “After much deliberation with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to ask for my release and explore other opportunities at this time. Thank you for your support through this process.”

Killeya-Jones, a five-star recruit from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, came to Kentucky as a heralded McDonald’s All-American and was a part of two Southeastern Conference Tournament championships and one regular-season crown.

“It’s never easy for me seeing a player go, especially when it’s someone you’ve seen grow as much as Sacha has and someone you want to continue to coach,” Calipari said. “I truly believe Sacha was just starting to find out who he is and that his best days are ahead of him. I still believe that whether he’s here or someone else.

“With that said, when a kid comes to me and believes what’s best for him is somewhere else, they always have my full support. We want what’s best for these kids and will always do whatever we can to make sure they can pursue their dreams. Our staff wishes Sacha nothing but the best.”

Killeya-Jones enjoyed an improved sophomore season, charting career highs in every statistical category, including minutes, points, free throws, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. For his career he averaged, 3.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting at a 58.5-percent clip. He appeared in 49 total games during his career. He poured in a career-high 12 points vs. UT Martin during his freshman campaign and hauled in a career-high nine rebounds in UK’s Champions Classic matchup with Kansas in the third game of the 2017-18 season.

The 6-foot-10 forward enjoyed a memorable performance at the 2018 SEC Tournament where he posted 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks over the three games. His put-back jam off of a Wenyen Gabriel missed 3-pointer in the final minute of the championship game coupled with a block on the other end sparked the Cats to their fourth straight tournament crown.

Good for him. Like his talent but he was smart enough to know his minutes would continue to be limited even as he got better. He didn’t develop like he thought he would which would keep him above other bigs and he has realized what he is and could become before it is too late. He will go somewhere else and continue to develop and have a good career. UK will continue to get good bigs who will also have good careers. Win win all around

Nice comments from Cal. He sees SKJ’s potential and praised him in the tourney for how he was playing. I think Cal wanted him to stay, but you have to let the kid go.

Seeing negative posters with an agenda saying things like Cal pushing kids out of this system making guys that don't make it in a year want to transfer. I'm sure Cal hates it as much as they do. Cal don't want to coach a kid and see him starting to get it and then go elsewhere to finish...that's got to be hard for a coach

Hate to see him go. He had some good minutes this year. I was hopeful for the stability he could have provided next year. Plus he and Richards practicing against one another would be a help to both.

Not being an ***, but there is already a five page thread on it...why did we need a whole other thread with “More SKJ”?

someone said this earlier but given his age and development, sitting out a year and practicing with a strong DI team would probably be ideal for his development, not necessarily his personal goals. But if I had NBA aspirations, at this point I'd want that extra year.

Hope he finds what he is looking for, in no shape or form do I think Cal wanted him to leave. All the praise and positive reinforcement during SECT and then Tournament leads me to believe this. Wish he never got the flu which sidelined him for several games. After KU game was very impressed and thought he was breaking into rotation. Funny how stuff unrelated to basketball can really affect their futures... whereever he goes he will be a positive.

Love SKJ this one hurt's a lot but can't blame the kid for transferring. The lack of playing time after he came back from his family funeral was just dumb.

Cats current front court next year before others make decisions:

PJ Washington
Jarred Vanderbilt
Wenyen Gabriel
Nick Richards
EJ Montgomery

Keldon is a wild card. He's listed as a shooting guard, but most think he will be playing at the 3.

Johnson will be a 3. And a good one at that, unless the foot injury bug hits him like it did Vando.

It worked out well for Wiltjer, Matthews, and Lee as far as playing time goes, It wouldn't surprise me to see Richards and Green transfer this year or next.

I don't think it was as simple as Cal just being mean or unfair to him about playing time. Nothing scandalous, I just think it was more complex than what we saw on television.

Wonder how much of a 'fight' Cal puts up when guys tell him they wanna transfer.....don't know what goes on behind the scenes obviously...but his comments always seem kind of 'passive'.....like he never fights to keep a kid

This quote made me think about that....

"when a kid comes to me and believes what’s best for him is somewhere else, they always have my full support"

Jones was getting Vanderbilt's minutes and was doing well with them but with Vandy coming back along with EJ and PJ, it probably meant more bench time than he wanted.
