More difficult recruiting year?

Has there ever been a more difficult year than the 2022s class for trying to earn a scholarship? Limited Jr recruiting film, little to no junior yr recruiting, 5th year covid scholarships, 6th yr covid super senior scholarships, transfer portal in full form and loaded.......

Not sure if its true, hearing that many usual scholarship FCS schools are offering roster spots and no $$ other than applying for financial aid.

In retrospect allowing 2020 not to count against NCAA eligibility was a terrible move and it is going to hurt high schools seniors for a few more years. When you figure in the ease of transferring now it gets even worse. The only people who are going to benefit from this are the lower levels of football which will probably now will get looks from kids that ordinarily wouldn’t have considered them.

We all the the '21 class had it the worst, until the '22 kids got recruited. Structurally the '21 class had it worst(like you said) but a LOT of '21s had been seen soph/junior film and there were full amounts of scholarships to give so they gave them. This '22 class was left with scraps. Edgy can tell you, this was brutal. I was at the AFCA in San Antonio this past weekend with all the college coaches from around the country. When Sam Pittman (Arkansas HC) talked to the General Assembly on Sunday he went out of his way to demand from all the coaches in the room to make sure they recommit to their lifeline which is high school athletes. It was great to hear him say it. He even said they are privately discussing potentially having a signing date for transfer portal kids to be held after high school commitment day to seperate them. Lots of changes coming to our beloved sport of football, so buckle up.

I don’t disagree with that, I lived through the ‘21s recruiting. Many needed that camp look, face to face visit and SR film to get the top offers they deserved.

When the 2021s were going thru it, I was like "man, I feel sorry for these kids. No fall season, abbreviated spring season..." But, now seeing the glut of kids coming back for a 5th and 6th year and schools choosing between seasoned players in the transfer portal and incoming freshman, I just think this is way worse. These 2022s can get looked at with film and camps, but "scraps" is the operative word. Many coaches are saying, I don't need another RB in my RB room, I already have 15 returning and "so and so" will be with us for what will be 6 years.

The damn transfer portal. Rent a player for a year instead of investing in one for 4 years. If your not at least a 3 star, maybe 2, it’s rough waters out there.

And now it’s going to promote the transfer portal even more. So many 21 & 22 players that are studs that didn’t get the offer they probably deserved are going to be standouts at the schools that scored them and then the bigger schools are going to sweep in and grab them once they put themselves in the portal. Like I said, there are some changes/regulations that are on the way. This model is not sustainable.

Correct. That is why the college coaches this week are trying to all about solutions to this. Some coaches are going to maintain building through high school recruiting w/ taking a random portal kid, but some are clearly using the portal as a major building block. It’s a bit of chaos. We will see what people come up with. But I do think in the next couple years the pendulum will swing back to high school kids. BUT not like it used to be. I also think the 5th and 6th year COVID senior thing is dying off now so that will help.

With coaches now being fired after 2-3 years the transfer portal will be the preferred way to build depth going forward. Those players are more of a known quantity compared to an HS kid.

Their top offer, whether they should have been D1, FCS scholarship, D2 or anywhere else. Fringe kids didn’t get that chance is all I’m saying.

Yep. College coaches would rather take a chance on the d1 transfer that can help now than wait to develop a kid. It's crazy, but thats how they think. Deon Sanders has a 40 40 20 rule. Grabbing 40% grad transfers, 40% from the transfer portal & 20% HS recruits. I think alot of these big schools are headed towards this way as well. Not good for the HS recruit. The portal is allowing kids to move w/o losing a year of eligibility.
Right now, gone are the days of high school kid saying he's waiting for a better offer. Schools can go into the portal, and grab an acedemic qualifier with d1 experience and he's READY TO COMPETE NOW! And the d2 schools are waiting for the crumbs to fall off the table and snatching up talent they normally wouldn't get & its not the HS kid. smh.

I think in the end, High School kids that can play will be fine. The on the fence kid and below will suffer.

I think @McCaravan stated it. If you are not at least a 2.5, 3 star, its going to be rough the next few years. Recruiters first trip off campus used to be straight to a high school then to the JUCO's. Now they are going where??? Straight to the portal first. There's less of a risk than hoping a High schooler works out. And for the school that jus lost a player to the portal, well they go to the portal to find exactly what they lost in the transfer. The portal is the Wild Wild West right now...

I don't disagree however, there are still High School players contributing as true freshman. I think things will become more realistic and kids will play at their true level.

I have been talking to more baseball coaches with my son than football coaches, but assume the difficulty is similar. Have been told that the 2021s really got screwed, 2022s a bit less, 2023s will still feel it, a small issue for 2024s and then it will be back to normal. But have no doubt that it is a full 4 year cycle due to players getting a "Covid year" of eligibility and the NCAA not giving an extra scholarship/roster spot for those utilizing the Covid year.

PWO means they have an opportunity to earn a scholarship. In the past, a lot of kids earned scholarship despite being scholarship kids. Schools were able to take a lot of risk with potential. PWO allows them to bring the same type of player in without the financial commitment before proving themselves.

It's not just preferred PWO's, but many players are also falling down levels to D2 or D3 that used to be D1 whether FBS or FCS. This same NCAA Transfer Portal site tweeted a couple days ago that since 8/1/21, over 3200 players entered the transfer portal.

My son signed with Grand Valley yesterday. At his formal visit to GVSU two weekends ago, I spoke at length with a couple of GVSU coaches about recruiting and they discussed how different it now is because of the transfer portal. More HS players are available to lower levels who just a few years ago were considered D1 players. No question less scholarships are available to HS players right now. In addition, some D1 schools offer kids but then sign kids out of the portal and withdraw their offers. (How brutal is that?) I heard this story happening to players at least 4 times that weekend. This could happen at any time prior to the player signing a letter of intent, so some high school players get screwed near the end of recruiting. GVSU had two kids visiting that weekend who suddenly did not have D1 scholarships. One kid had previously committed to an SEC school.

Congrats to you and your son. GVSU is such a great program and they do an amazing job recruiting the Chicago area. Coach Louis is first class and no BS. That is why they consistently win. Good luck. And YES to everything you guys are talking about. 2022 was a S*#@ show for recruiting. The 2023 cycle is already different for kids. Hopefully things level off in the next few years.

Speaking of transfer portal, it is one a time thing without sitting out. How many of these kids will be transfering a second time after spring ball when they are worse off on depth chart then they were at the original school?

One time transfer is correct.

Look at the number of kids that went into the portal and left school only to not get picked up by anyone, it is stunningly high. These kids are buried on the depth chart so coaches have incentive for them to leave but they aren't really getting good advice if anyone actually wants them.
