May be hindsight to some but should have not been to an AD at a power 5 school. Being a successful OC at an elite B1G will never guarantee being a successful HC at a second tier SEC school. PSU wins with unlimited budgets, epic facilities and elite athletes...WHEN we do win it's with blood and sweat and unbelievable dedication from a bunch tough coaches and kids who usually have to be "coaxed" to come here and then have to be intensely DEVELOPED in mind and body after they get here. This job takes a smart, tough individual who's probably dealt with a lot of adversity to get where he is not a guy that has had a relatively easy life in the coaching profession. Cohen may understand baseball pretty well but I don't think he understands what it takes to be a head coach in the SEC. Put simply, Cohen is not an experienced AD, was in over his head making this hire and screwed it up.

So in other words "poor old Miss State". Not cool.

I guess success is in the eye of the beholder. To me taking a team that went 1-10 and then going 6-5, 12-2, 11-3 and 9-3 is not too shabby. May not be good enough for you 17ers tho. Or at UConn he took OC job in 09 and won big east in 10. Not sure what went south there but he did get demoted. I guess adding 100 yards a game to the offense at PSU is not adequate either. I am not sure what BG is. He did not coach at Bowling Green. Maybe if we hired Jesus ??
Until you realize beginning in 2010 through 2013, Fordham was the only school in their league able to offer football scholarships in exchange for not being eligible for the conference championship. You think maybe Joe had a big advantage playing those non-scholarship schools in his league to build those W/L records?

Until you realize he inherited B10 super-talent Saquon Barkley going into his sophomore year, and had him both years. Mel Kiper Jr., who has history of being against drafting running backs in the first round, said “Barkley is a once in a lifetime talent, teams that pass on this young man will be sorry.” You think maybe the #2 pick in the NFL draft, a young athlete who had already shown he was a stud before Joe got there, might have helped that offense? Saquon got 90 more carries his sophomore year...35 more carries + 24 more receptions his Junior year.

Joe also inherited Trace McSorley. Now we can reasonably credit Joe with helping McSorley realize his potential. But that makes him a good QB coach, not an offensive guru. As much as you want to credit JoMo for all those 100 extra yards, it's just as plausible to say inheriting Barkely had more to do with it than Joe's coaching ability.

You are oversimplifying.

Please answer 2 questions for me:

1) what has to happen to make you blow it up?

2) what have you seen from Moorhead at Mississippi state that gives you encouragement for what he will do in the future here?

To be honest he has not shown me anything very positive here except against much weaker teams. I was a little disappointed last year. This year, in my opinion has been a total cluster 17. But I don't put it on him that we are playing so many freshmen or the injuries we have had. If I was Cohen I would do one more year unless we get destroyed in the EB. But if Cohen fires him i will get behind the next guy. My main issue is the players haven't quit, its not Croomish yet, this is not a coaching magnet school or an easy place to win

I have been watching State football since the early 70s. I know what it is historically and what I wish it was.

Fordham was the only school in their league from 2010 thru 2012 allowed to offer football scholarships in a deal where they agreed to not be eligible for the league championship title. You think maybe Joe had a significant unfair advantage that helped fatten his record?

Joe's first year he had the benefit of 3 full scholarship classes. By his 2nd year he was coaching senior scholarship players while no other league member had anything more than freshmen on scholarships. In fact, at Fordham Joe never had to face a team in his league that had a senior scholarship player.

And Blacklistedbully....no doubt we can find another coach for 3 mill. Not a proven winning P5 coach. Maybe 5 tho. For all I know HUD or Napier might could be hired and might do a better job. I just think there are some ignorant statements made on here that are not factually true. There are for sure better coaches out there. Can they win here ? Idk.
There was nobody more excited about the JoMo hire than me. But after seeing how we've played and witnessing his PC's, even considering the bad breaks, etc., I've come to have no confidence in Joe anymore. It's not just W/L...it's the way we have played.

At this point I'm beyond ready to move on. I like the idea of Hud, am a little unsure about Napier, but he might be good. I hear some say Norvell isn't interested because he's looking at UPig & FSU, but how can he be interested in UPig, and not us?

I'd also be interested in Mike Leech if he'd consider the move. Whatever we do, I want a damn good S&C coach.

That’s not entirely true. He was the OC at OConn for 1 year and was demoted to QB coach after having one of the worst offenses in football. He had success at PSU but he had a NFL QB, TE, a lottery pick RB, and was the more talented roster in every game except Mich & OSU. When you look at his career as a play caller, he only succeeded when the deck is heavily stacked in his favor. That won’t happen often in the SEC West if you aren’t Bama.

Wow. That is quite some spin. He was OC/QB coach at UConn for two years, 2009-2010. I'm not going to look up the offensive stats, but in 2010 UConn won the Big East and played in the Fiesta Bowl.

After the Fiesta Bowl, Randy Edsall took the head job at Maryland. New UConn Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni came in, and hired his own OC, George Deleon. He retained Moorhead as QB coach, though. That is a demotion, obviously, but it wasn't necessarily based on performance. He was retained.

He wasn't running his current offense at UConn, either.

Holy ****. You just busted the myth of Moorhead's successful record at Fordham. He had a freaking cakewalk into the playoffs every year.

Any more detail on this? How / why did this arrangement come about? I’ve never heard of that. Can we get 100 schollies in exchange for not being able to win the SEC West?

Lack of a rule explicitly permitting football athletic scholarships didn’t stop Fordham from handing out merit aid beginning in 2009, but it did result in the league ruling the university ineligible for automatic bids in Football Championship Subdivision postseason play. (Fordham is still eligible for at-large championship bids but it hasn’t performed well enough to qualify at any level.)

This spring, the league will decide when Fordham will again become eligible for postseason play. Femovich said it’s likely that the remaining institutions will be given at least a couple of years to recruit with merit aid before Fordham gets the green light.

“It’s more or less to keep the playing field somewhat level,” she said. “In this business, an athletic scholarship gives you a resource and a tool to attract some talented individuals, if it’s used well.”

Fordham’s president, Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., said in a statement that the university is “very pleased” its competitors followed its lead. “We have found at Fordham that this approach has allowed our staff and coaches to recruit academically and athletically talented student athletes in a more efficient and effective manner,” he said.

Yep. Looks like some of the boys on ED have finally caught on to this.

For those of you still defending Joe, please take a detailed look at his actual performance relative to his circumstances. Overwhelming evidence he underachieved, yet it got glossed over, I believe in a similar way to how pollsters focus too much on W/L rather than actual on-field performance and/or extenuating circumstances.

2015 OM at Bama, a 6-point upset win by OM. OM and Freeze praised for having Saban's #, a lot of people suggesting OM has shown the model for beating Saban & Bama. What does not get nearly enough consideration is that Bama turned the ball over 5 times in that game, perhaps one actually caused by OM.

OM got a nail-biter 6-pt win on the back of a +5 turnover margin. I submit a narrow win like that when you have a +5, though getting the W is most important, should actually have been considered a dumb-luck win, not the accomplishment most trumpeted. OM should have been happy with the W, but damn sure not bragging about such a low margin win given the circumstances. Bama kicked their *** on the field, but self-destructed that day.

To me, that's one small example of how many people don't bother to consider all the facts before making judgments.

They will always give the coach an extension every year. It shows continuity for recruiting and hiring purposes. Often they negotiate the buy out lower so the extension does not make it any harder to can the coach. And we are always on the bottom end with pay. I'm always amazed that people come on here and say we can get any coach to come here for 3 mill a year. 3 mill ain't **** these days unless you are talking to an FCS maybe

Well, not always. Mullen didn't get one after 2015, primarily because our administration was tired of his annual end of year job shopping. I do think that led to some bad feelings though and the next time we saw Mullen after that he was in shorts coaching against South Alabama.

But all of this is through the benefit of hindsight. I think most of us agree. The original point is that this was unforeseen, and not the AD’s fault.

Actually the point should be that its ALWAYS a big risk to hire a coordinator that you have no background on how he will run a program. We were actually very fortunate that Mullen worked out as well as he did. If you have never run an FBS program before as a HEAD COACH, then its a roll of the dice. At least you should know a little more about what you are getting with a successful G5 HC. Kansas State is even showing that the best FCS HC in the country can make a pretty successful transition.

I have to agree that if we want to be competitive against Bama and LSU we need to improve on S&C snd O line coaches and for sure special teams. It takes money to keep good people.

You're 100% correct in that it takes money to attract and retain good assistants.

Some folks come on here and say they're not going to buy season tickets which is short-sighted to say the least, so how does that affect our theory on hiring quality coaches?
