Moorhead and former MSU players

It was suggested during the season that this staff may not be super accommodating to our former players. You even had some frustrated social media comments from some of those guys. So I find it interesting that Joe has tweeted separate shoutouts to Chris Jones, Fletcher Cox, and Johnthan Banks today. Is this him trying to right a wrong, or was this something that was communicated with him by our administration?

I definitely think stuff like that is a good thing, just interesting that we've seen so much of it today. Didn't know if there might be a rhyme or reason for it.

ETA: it’s also possible that it’s merely a plug for recruiting purposes since the early signing period is a week away.

My thought is it's us trying to show the former players are behind Moorhead - especially as you said - during the season there was some public social media questioning by them.

Yep. He's just trying to create a buzz, and apparently a RT from a pro bowler moves the needle.

ETA- I did think before the Egg Bowl there was a concerted effort to get former players and folks to drum up support- and that was about morale.

I never saw that suggested anywhere but on this site. It may be true but I can't imagine Joe being that stupid. Our ex players are our history and invaluable to this program. Most particularly during recruiting season. Which is 12 months a year really. To be able to point at Dak and Chris Jones and Simmons and all of them is helpful. They should be encouraged to come back anytime.

I've never believed any coach shuns former players of the school. They player may feel like they are on the outside just because all the faces are new. Players and coaches are a fraternity and you will never convince me that coaches shuns players just because they graduated before he got there. It even sounds stupid.

I think a lot of players want to be a bit more involved on gameday than they should be allowed to be. Some were complaining about where they were standing or something during the season. Coaches have their jobs on the line and they don’t need distractions on game day from people who have not been in the locker room for half a decade or more in most cases. It’s tough to go from being a player to a fan, I’m sure. I feel like Joe deserves a lot of criticism but he does not seem like the type of personality that would intentionally mistreat former players. His personality is what most people are fond of on the recruiting trail and the locker room.

Well, ask Dennis Franchione how shunning former players, old and young, worked out for him at A&M. They 17ing hated him for that very reason from the get go.

The players I heard complaining were upset because they thought Joe was not doing a good job, hurting the program and definitely NOT the "answer" going forward. None mentioned anything about being accommodated in any way.. I.E. they were speaking as much as State fans as they were former players.

Didn’t I read something about Banks (and maybe others) speaking to the team about the importance of the egg bowl? Thought that was interesting... don’t remember where I read it a week or so ago.

Edit: maybe Moorhead mentioned it in the post game or an interview now that I think about it...

There is a difference in 1 or 2 players being on the sidelines and a huge group of them being intermingled with the team. Joe put them in a box off to the side from what I could gather about Banks and the other’s complaints and they didn’t like that. You can’t just have 30 former players wandering around in the middle of your team.

There were some complaining about their accommodations on game day as to where they could stand.

This is false, but good timing on your post. Paul actually talked about this today. When Joe first got the job he reached out to all former bulldogs in the NFL and told them they are all welcome to the facilities at MSU any time they want to use them and are more than welcome to be around the program. Fletcher Cox actually came down and met with Joe pretty quickly after he was hired.

Former players (and fans) were pissed on twitter at least once and I think it may have been after we got beat by someone pretty good either Bama or LSU.

ETA: Boobie and Jon Banks were both on the sideline during the Egg Bowl.

Build relationships with current players, recruits then former players IMO. Can’t do it all at once

I thought I saw AD get off the bus during the DawgWalk. I could be wrong. I've already been wrong twice this year.

Well I guess I could agree that they not be a distraction during the actual game. But still
