I was there. Montini played really really well, except for a bunch of penalties. They were way faster than Carmel. Soph QB played well. They got the ball to Florio a lot. He’s small and slight, but very skilled and super fast. Might’ve had 3 or 4 TDs. Can’t remember which ones were called back due to penalty.

The “Blackout” sponsored by Frankie’s Deli was ridiculous. New all black uni’s…. THREE fireworks shows…. Lights off…. Crazy atmosphere.

Florio and that Soph QB with the arm were giving Fenwick’s defense fits just a few weeks ago. Phenomenal players.

Huge win for Montini. A win next week puts them in the playoffs. Now Carmel needs 2 wins with a tough schedule ahead of them. I’d imagine Byron was not happy with this win today.
I’m sure Byron doesn’t care who they play.

I need glasses, I'm sure more than a few saw the post title this morning and were like ehhh or were looking forward to an article about some snake pit.

Broncos, congrats...you took one from my local Catholic HS.

Broncos slightly better than last year? A lot better? About the same?
They gave Byron a pretty good game, but Byron seems better this year, and Montini might not have home field again.

Have not watched Montini in person this year.

But, defense seems better, returned 10 starters. Have not given up too many points.

Offense, a lot to learn over next 3 games. Looks like Abrams is now full time starter, and playing very good.

My prediction, will play Byron in semis once again.

They will almost certainly play each other, but who knows what seed Montini will get?

They might meet up in the 2nd round.

I have no reference point to the 2023 Montini Catholic team, but will add to this thread Carmel Catholic’s loss Friday in Lombard was at the hands of the most explosive offense they’ve faced through week (6).

Montini’s defense can be scored on, however, IMO.

100% Montini will be a tough opponent in the playoffs.

Again, I have no reference point to their 2023 team, or other 3A teams.

CCHS-Fan.....what's up with your Corsairs? With DePaul, Loyola and Fenwick coming up the playoffs are in doubt. I thought CoM was a legit 5A contender to start the year, but they have seemed to struggle this year.

Is Byron better this year than last? Montini looks better and only lost by 6 to Byron last year.
I haven’t seen them in person, but it looks like this year’s Byron is better than last year.
Their best skill kids (FB, WB and QB) all returned, and they always seem to have a wealth of lineman that is top notch for the 3A/4A level.
The all state FB Considine was dinged up and missed a few games, but I read that he’s good to go now.

PJJP, lots of inconsistent performance from the offense. This is not a call-out, however.

It has been an interesting season, without a doubt.

When the Corsairs limit turnovers, they play good, complimentary football, IMO. Being young at the QB position is always going to be a challenge, however.

The Corsairs had 400+ yds of offense against Lake Forest, but 3 costly turnovers and a missed FG did them in. Became one dimensional when they had to play from behind.

370+ yds of offense against StL, but again, 3 costly turnovers, one being a pick on a throw to the end zone from our own 5yd line. 3 total turnovers in that game, too. And several dropped passes at key times inside of drives. I feel like the StL game is the one CCHS gave away, taking nothing away from StL, a tough, scrappy group and when healthy, a formidable opponent come playoff time, wherever they land.

The loss against Montini had 4 sure-thing dropped passes that would have extended drives. Carmel also went for it with under 10 seconds on the clock from the 3yd. line and were stopped right before halftime, down 21-3. The right call by coaches, though. Montini was far and away the better team and the final result was going to be the same, regardless. Montini had a few TD’s and big plays called back because of penalties.

Corsairs are still alive, IMO, even at 4-5, given the possible amount of 4-5’s qualifying as at-large teams this year. At last count I see 492 total teams playing football, and then the contraction of CPL teams being eligible for the postseason could offer up to eight-to-ten 4-5 teams qualifying compared to last season. I have Carmel finishing with 47 playoff points total, worst case, and at least 16 defeated opponents wins as tie-breaker points if needed (from defeating DePaul or Fenwick). A big IF, I know.

The reward in the end may be a #1 seed, the likes of Nazareth, PR, or Sycamore, but it would give the team something to keep engaged with and an outcome to ‘reach for’ through week 9.

Only if we can get a 4th win.

Fingers crossed.

They are not multiplied in this two-year cycle unless I am mistaken. So, they don't need two consecutive title games to get up to 4A.
Or am I missing something here.
I know they're not currently multiplied, but to move up wouldn't they need to be successful factored up? Meaning they would need to reach consecutive title games in 3A in a given 2 year cycle?

I looked at this at length today.

Montini needs 3 playoff wins in two years to receive the 1.65 multiplier.

They already achieved that last year so they will be multiplied into 4a next season.

Byron better petition up next year.

For 3A to have any interest, it is essential that Montini be in it. Rather than running roughshod on all their opponents, I'm sure Byron looks forward to the challenge of taking on Montini.
Other than Dixon, the BNC is down and that is a disadvantage Byron will have against Montini, who will be more battle-tested.
However, strange things often happen in football and it is possible these two teams might not meet.
