A lot of comments, re: Montez. Thought they might group together.

My two cents:

1) did not think he played well last night; tried to do too much;
2) think his future depends on his willingness to figure out what he can do best and play to strength as his game evolves;
3) don't generally see him at this point as an offensive priority, more as a guy who gets points on breakouts, put backs, steals. alley-oops, etc.
4) but can create some matchup problems given his physicality;
5) benefits by not coming in with the ype of hype some of his higly rated predecessors did (Rosario, Lamazana);
4) BEST news. he was the fourth best newcomer last night after Johnson, Harper, and Kiss!

One game. Sam Dekker, who was an All-American at Wisconsin and has now been in the NBA for four years averaged 4 points his first season. Granted, big men take longer to develop, but would have been instructive to read the Wisconsin basketball board that season.

We seem to be concentrating on the negatives, when nobody in the prediction thread had us winning by as much as 20 and some saw a close game we won late. Geo had a nice game with 7 assists and double figure scoring--would have had better numbers if the game had been close and he got more minutes. Yet one poster carped about him only going to the hoop once. Even though that's not his game. He is not Russell Westbrook. Omoruyi, Geo, Thiam, Kiss, Johnson, Harper all played well. Bunch of guys in double figures, and the shooting looks improved, but the posters want to concentrate on McConnell and Mathis who did not play well in their first college game. Some are even bemoaning the departure of Corey Sanders, remembering only his B1G tournament games and forgetting the times Coach Pikiell benched him for the way he played. Hate to say it, but he impeded the development of others because he was, as Quincy Douby was before him, a selfish player. Wish him all the luck in the world overseas, but am happy he left when he did.

0-4 from three. 5 turnovers. That was Geo in his opener v. CCNY (D-3 school) a year ago. Thank goodness it didn’t derail Geo the way this FDU game will clearly define Montez’ season.*

*Excluding that on team full of plus athletes Mathis looked to be the best athlete on the floor

Whatever. I don’t think there’s anything overly critical about my op. The kid can learn and become a real contributor. Is that hyper-critical? This is a basketball game and I like to examine and post my comments.

No worries. I think people are saying it’s wayyyy too early to make an assessment. I agree. He was jittery, but had a both a great ally ooo assist and dunk. In those instances he was just playing...not thinking. Let Mondez go out and do his thing.

Very athletic and strong physique.
Love the short shorts with the spandex shorts under - great look.

Montez will rock the rac plenty of times in his career.

The way he was played I think you are totally wrong here. I think the staff believes he needs him right now as a priority.

I hope he goes out and catches fire against Drexel...you know, like, a double double with 20+ points and 10+ boards and nearly misses a triple double.

Then we can watch some on here have cranial explosions!

Montez will get the minutes even early on because he will be a tough defender and rebounder...just what Pike wants. I can deal with with some growing pains because this kid will be special.

I like what I saw. Imo, he will be a better version of Mike Williams(I loved how Mike played and did all the little things that help elevate a team). He will be an important player for us during his time on the banks.

I didn't see the game but got the impression from here he started off poorly but got better as the game went along. True or false.

True. He was just out of sync and over thinking it out there then forcing the issue a bit. All clear first game freshman type issues. He physically looks great. Does not have the body of a freshman. He doesn't need a year in the weight room. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a real good game today.

Agree. Said so in another thread. Kind of what I’m thinking: bigger, stronger, more athletic version of Mike.

He is absolutely nothing like Mike Williams.

Mike might have been the heart of RU(became a great rebounder for his size and was a fan favorite), but never came close to living up to the shooter he was supposed to be. Mathis will become a much better shooter and player than Mike Williams. Mike was supposed to be a great shooter but shot 39% from the field and 21% from 3 last year.

Best of Luck,
Groz
