Not taking delight in our in state brethren being beaten but this is for all the people who were wringing their hands worrying when we scheduled them for next year.
WMU isn't bad but there is a giant leap from FCS to D1.
This will be an easy win for us.

Really would be great if Monmouth kept getting better and more competitive. But last 2 years they cannot hang with mid-range schools. No shot against Rutgers. Good for NJ to have stronger College football identity, and that would require MU Hawks to get better.

Rutgers is really going to play Monmouth? I guess I missed that. That seems ridiculous, please play some real teams and more people will attend and enjoy the games.

Monmouth is a step up from Norfolk St. and Howard. Just in case you missed it we will be playing Delaware in 2021.

What real teams do you want to play? SEC, PAC12, ACC?

We play BC this year and Syracuse next year. The schedule in the B1G 10 East is tough enough.
I'll bring back a quote I heard from George Raveling the former BB coach at Washington. He said that all of those coaches who believe in playing the toughest possible schedule are all Assistant Managers at Walmart now.

I always like playing the MAC and CUSA teams, teams like Western and Central Michigan. Does CUSA even exist anymore?

I don’t know where all the money is coming from, but they just built a brand new stadium, just a few years after opening a new arena. Neither are huge, but the 4,000 arena is beautiful and has all the bells and whistles. AND plenty of bathrooms !

Monmouth is headed to D1.

We don’t need any more schedule strength. We need wins.

Elmira is way off base here.
You think they are or they have actually stated they were? Can’t see them making the jump and to what conference

Any conference would have to be better than the one they're in now. It's a revolving door of schools year in, year out.

Monmouth playing FBS? Hard to imagine but you never know

Monmouth needs games against FBS opponents to help out financially. They wont win any of them but they do well in the Big South Conference. The last two years they finished 9-3 and 8-3 and in '17 they even made it to the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history.

MU isnt looking to join the FBS. That isnt possible for them, but they do want to be as successful as they can be on the FCS level and they enjoy strong alumni and fan support. They are happy where they are in the MAAC and playing football in the Big South but if the CAA came calling for all sports they would join. Im hearing mixed messages on if they would ever get invited though.

Nah, academically, MU is fine. The CAA is full of so so state schools. Its not like they are the Ivy League or even the Patriot League. The problem is Monmouth isnt "big time" enough for the CAA. The CAA might lose JMU and/or Delaware soon who both have stadiums that seat over 20k. They really dont want to replace one of those schools with someone who can only put 4500 in the stadium. The only thing that helps MU in this regard is the fact that there arent any other northeast options that fit. Last time the CAA added someone it was Elon. Hopefully, for MU's sake, the CAA doesn't want to travel any further south than that.

Should beg the Patriot League. Patriot league has other single sports teams. Loyola isn’t great academically

Do Wagner, Holy Cross, Colgate and Albany ring a bell? You know the whole throwing stones in glass houses thing.

I hate these games, whoever plays them. If you look at attendance at these games, you’ll see I’m not alone.

So does the CAA (Richmond for FB and A10 for everything else) but the Patriot has more room.

Good call on that idea, I like it.

Our schedule is one of the more difficult in the country year in and year out.

Elmira wants to step up in OOC schedule.
Sure , let's play Old Dominion. That's a real team. We pay them to come . They bring 72 fans.
At least with Monmouth it brings a little local flavor and a few thousand of their fans hoping to knock off the neighborhood FBS team.
By the way ODU opened up their season with a win. A 24-21 nailbiter against.....Norfolk State.

Who's our starting QB next year? Who's our coach going to be?

Until then I'll reserve judgement.

This whole lets play a good 1AA is idiotic. We should play only MEAC teams or whoever is willing to take the smallest payday.

Apparently they made that jump years ago (to Division 1 FCS). Didn't know that before Hobbs scheduled them.

You don't play Monmouth for schedule strength. You don't not play Monmouth for schedule strength. It is exactly like ODU playing Norfolk State.

But can we be careful with the terminology here? Monmouth is Division I. You can move up to a better basketball conference and still play FCS football. That is Monmouth's desire.

And it makes perfect sense to play them, as long as it's the opener. I don't know how many times I heard over the past three days that college teams don't play preseason games or scrimmages. Having Florida play Miami in the opener is crazy, especially that early. You know damn well neither team is going to be a well-oiled machine. You have to use that first game as a preseason game. UMass was a good choice, and so is Monmouth.

We ain't 'fraid of no Hawks.

One more thing you hadn't mentioned: you play Monmouth for the money savings. According to the APP, we are paying UMass and Liberty a combined 2.3MM to come for a one-and-done this year. Monmouth is coming for 375k. We're broke. This makes financial sense.
