Passive observer of MLB. Used to be a die-hard, box score reader until the lockout in the 1990s...never got me fully back.
And the trade deadline is a great reason why. Dodgers and other teams at the top are just buying titles. Stealing the best players from other teams. Rinse...repeat.

The Blue Jays can't get out of their own way this year, and I understand that they had to get something for Kevin Gausman before he hits free agency. But man, they gave him to the Cubs for a bag of doorknobs.

With a lockout coming and likely a very different sport when it resumes it makes sense for teams to go all in. Dodgers are awesome because they spend to win, with the idea being if they win they will make the money back through valuation and sale of the team. Cubs have been 10th and 15th the last two years in payroll despite being 3rd in revenue, so the Ricketts family takes more than it gives. And they have been getting their butts kicked by the Brewers who barely spend anything. The sad thing is...take away the deferred payments, and you have a really healthy sport....it is growing in popularity dramatically world-wide and even stateside. Owners are just spreading BS because they don't want to spend...places like Pittsburgh have crappy product, crappy location, crappy stadium and then complain about other teams. The job of the owner is to run the organization so that it gains value...not suck it dry until it dies.

I don't disagree with you about baseball owners, or about Pittsburgh having a crappy owner. But the Pirates have one of the best stadiums and locations in baseball.

Until there is a hard salary cap or at least elimination of the deferred salaries organization like the dodgers etc. are going to be top dog . They run a good system in the minors and scout very well until the former gets fixed the days of the Royals 2014 and 15 are going to be far and few between.

As a Pirates fan I wholehardly agree about the ownership. Bob Nutting is a curse word to most of us. But the stadium is beautiful and one of the best if not the best in baseball. Shame it's usually filled with a crappy product.

I'm glad the Bucs were able to boost the bullpen at the deadline. It's a shame one of the best hitting teams in the league this year has been constantly let down by them. If only the games were 7 innings... I remember awhile ago seeing their record would be 55-27. Testament to how bad the bullpen has been.

injuries are starting to pile up though so not sure if they should have bought at the deadline for a .500 team. O'hearn, Griffin and Keller all out. Skenes doesn't look right. I guess we'll see hopefully be a fun conclusion to the season
