He has mountains to go to even be in the same stratosphere as Tariq. Last year, his only playmaking shot was a midrange jumper off the dribble and his overall efficiency on it was poor. He did not show an ability to attack the rim, or draw fouls. Doesn’t have a real pump fake. What he was last season was a dime a dozen. He had decent court vision but not a strong enough handle to be a primary PG. Poor defender and inefficent 3 point shooter. Sometimes a year makes a big difference so we’ll have to see. At this point in time, there’s no basis for thinking he could surpass Tariq unless it’s simply because he’s a few inches taller (which didn’t even make him better at defense last year).
I never said he should be the point guard next year, and I must have forgotten what a great defender Francis was last year, even with him being given the easiest defensive assignment every game. And what a great ball handler he was also. He was asked to be the primary ball handler one time and he was a total failure. The difference between Francis this year and Powers next year won't be that great. I'm expecting you to say Powers won't be back. I wouldn't take that bet. If Pikiell was able to talk him into staying this year he'll probably be able to do the same next year, especially if he promises him some time at the point. Another thing - Powers was the best passer on the team BY FAR and the only one on the team who could create his own OPEN shot. At 6'4" he could be Pike's kind of PG. Think Geo Baker, only better. Geo certainly didn't have a great handle, could only go to his right, and wasn't much of a defender. As a freshmen, Powers also shot 32.6% from 3, not as "inefficient" as you claim , and really not that bad for a first year player. I don't think Baker even shot that for his career, and he is considered by many as an all time Rutgers great. Given the chance, Powers could be a top notch PG down the road. I just hope it's with us.

I think I said it many times that Tariq is not a “good” defender. He clogged in as slightly below average. Last season, Powers, Zrno and Grant battled it out for worst defender on the team. Powers has a ways to go to catch up - just on D. Tariq has physical limitations but understood the schemes and was rarely out of position. That’s not “nothing” - it matters. But Tariq didn’t play for his defense.

Powers was 34% overall from the field. No - he wasn’t that bad from 3 alone but that proves the point that he was absolutely horrific from 2. You sound ridiculous arguing that Powers was better at creating any shot that Tariq. Your clearly forgetting how many of those same silky smooth midranges Tariq nailed off the dribble. In Tariq’s case though, his portfolio of shots also includes deliberate attempts to draw contact as it rightfully should considering how many fouls he draws and how accurate he is at making them.

I also think your exaggerating the passing skills Powers demonstrated. He showed potential, but let’s not go crazy considering he didn’t even attempt that many passes and most of his better games were in garbage time. He had a great game against UCLA where he was on fire. But if you take that game out, he really wasn’t anything special last season. That doesn’t mean he won’t improve but that’s the starting point.

Not the point I'm trying to make, however, you're claiming that not one time all season were Dortch and Ogbole on the court at the same time. I'm guessing they were, and if they were, Dortch was playing the 4.
I bet someone can look it up one way or the other - yes, that’s what I’m claiming. I don’t recall the two of them playing together ever but certainly there were a few games I didn’t watch.

One thing I see people saying that I don't think matters in today's college bball world is "XYZ player didn't stay or come to not start or not get substantial minutes. They are being compensated financially and next year there will be new financially compensated players so a players feelings should not factor into minutes at all...at least imo .

The fact that you are paying someone doesn’t change the fact that to bring out the best in someone you have to manage their “feelings” as you describe them. Although the players are compensated that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a need to motivate them on an ongoing basis, playing time is, or should be, part of that reward structure. Everyone can’t play all the minutes they would like, but it’s smart of Pikiel to recognize the efforts of players who need to fill in and step up just as it’s helpful to recognize players who give their all regularly in games.

Jerry has been wrong about every one of his predictions over the past few seasons. Wouldn’t read into anything he says FWIW. Scarlet Nation podcast projects Miteo as a deep, reserve piece.
Bold move to make such a decisive declaration, especially when the reviews are all over the place. Some reputable sources think the opposite.

Me, I have no idea; but I think he might be able to compete for time by the end of the season or next year - if he stays - because those reviews vary so much.

Enjoyable discussion. My main takeaway is that there are a bunch of possible lineups this season. I susect there will be huge changes in the peck order from November to March.

Personally, that makes this season much more enjoyable for me. I am eager to see who rises to the occasion and who doesn't.

I said Powers created more OPEN shots than Francis - OPEN. While not shooting a great percentage, Powers mid range shots were generally clear looks, and not acrobatic, and Powers doesn't have much "of a ways to go" to catch up to Francis defensively due to his size and athletic ability. Powers defensive ceiling is much, much higher. Everyone has to remember he was only a freshman last year. Maybe he played mostly zone in high school. Maybe his high school coach didn't stress man to man defense. Do you know either of those things? Man to man defense is easy to learn if you want to learn it and the teacher is good.

You think learning man to man in college is so easy - huh? There’s a reason some youth club programs insist their coaches only play man even if it costs them wins. The reason is that your simply wrong. It’s actually not so easy to learn the quick instinctive help reflexes needed for an effective man scheme if your used to playing years and years in a vanilla zone system where you simply memorize the area your covering and where to shift to depending on where the ball goes. The bottom line is, if Powers is used to playing zone in high school the hill to be setvicable on D is going to be that much more challenging.

I really can’t fathom what your point is on offense. There’s nothing about Powers 2 point scoring numbers from last year that were even close to Tariq’s. Not open shots, nor contested ones. They were similar from 3, but that’s about it. Tariq took plenty of open shots in addition to the contested ones where he was deliberately trying to draw contact.

He’s listed on our website as 6-10 and 260 lb. If he earns PT, my opinion is it will to relieve Gurdak (listed 6-10 and 265 lb - over Buca or Ware (who is shorter and weighs less than him). Pike has no problem playing guys like Buchanan or Dortch at the 5 so this just seems the most logical spot he’d earn time.
I’ve only seen highlights, but I don’t see him playing the 4 against most teams, it is not the 1980’s anymore. We will see.

You've got Gurdak, Buca, Miteo, Buchanan & Ware, all playing the 5. It's not called the 5 because you need 5 guys there. Not sure you know what you're looking at. Pike WILL play them at the same time, how much depends on how effective Sydnor and Buchanan are at the 4. Miteo and Garavaglia are both legit regardless of how late their pick ups were.

Here's my team:

1 - Mark/Davis
2 - Francis/Jones
3 - Garavaglia/Jones/Powers
4 - Miteo or Sydnor/Buchanan
5 - Gurdak/Buca

Don't make it too complicated.
Missed Smith at the 3.

It's kind of funny you telling me what 12 year olds are doing. I got high school freshmen to play great man to man defense back in the 70's using the La Balbo drills, block out drills, and the shell drill every day in practice - the same drills Bobby Knight was using before everyone else was in college basketball. He was a pretty fair man to man defensive coach as I remember. I was also one of the first high school basketball coaches in NJ to use the La Balbo drills, and then I actually refined them for use with my varsity teams. Later on as a D2 assistant for three years my primary job was helping with the defense. We were top 5 defensively in the nation 2 out of my 3 years. I think I might have some idea of how difficult it is to teach college kids how to defend. I'm kind of an expert.

There are plenty of smaller high schools in NJ that while they play man, play mostly zone - many of the small suburban schools, and I never said Powers would leap Francis. I said Powers got more OPEN looks and had a higher defensive ceiling. I also said that maybe Powers' HS team played MOSTLY zone and not that they didn't' play any man. Congratulations - you got nothing right.

Not 12 year olds. All youth. Even the littlest ones. AAU is a business. Yet program level decisions are made to ban zone. There’s a reason. And Dercack and GG were the picture children for it. And by the way, the premise for it is that the older you get playing ball without playing much man, the harder it becomes to pick it up properly. There are certainly exceptions, but your really downplaying the importance of understanding the schemes vs raw athleticism as a one year predictor of success. Is it possible? Sure. Usually the players who make the most year over year improvements on D are the ones who need to improve their conditioning rather than their whole understanding of where to be (Dylan Harper - the obvious example). That’s not why Powers sucked at D. He didn’t play enough to be gassed. He was simply out of position and has a long long way to go to be servicable on D based on where he left off last year. I don’t understand how anyone could argue otherwise.

Believe it or not - some don’t run that much man. Or they run mostly pressing schemes and such. Not every kid comes in “getting it” and some never do. He’s really underestimating how important the natural help instinct is. When a player has to think for even a moment about those switches he’s a step late. It’s that simple.

He also suggested that there’s predictive data that could reasonably lead one to believe Miteo is going to start. As if the stats he put up in a Euro under 21 league are comparable to real D1 stats (which they aren’t). Another major longshot.

Sigh ...

First, no one knows what the line-up and reserevs will be with so m,any new players - not me, for sure. Yes, you are just giving an opinion, which is always appreciated.

Second, ypu try to make it less complicated, but your supposed line-up and depth chart has at least 2 major flaws - which throwas into douby=t the validity of your opinion:

a) Buchanan is a 3/4, regardless of the fact he did ply a little at the 5 last year (out of desperate need, not preference). And you do not list him at the 3. There is ZERO chance Powers gets minutes at the 3 INSTEAD of Buchanan ... 0%.

b) I would say that even with his supposed defensive deficiencies, Smith seems VERY likely to play ahead of Powers as well. It is not like Powers was very good at defense last season, after all, and Smith is WAY more proven as an offensive player than Powers.

For the life of me, even though I am glad to have Powers back, for several reasons (nice potential, for sure, and good proof the RU staff can retain players, etc.), unless he has shown MAJOR development, I see very little role for him on this team other than spot and situational minutes. And your comment later in this thread that you would want to see Powers be given back-up PG inutes: Hogwash. He is NOT a PG, not in any way shape or form ... he is a pure 2G, without the fuill set gf proven skills to be an effective high majpr 2G - at least not yet.

Good post. To build on your last point / hes a two guard who shot a horrific 36.7% from two last year (which becomes all the more awful if one wants to buy into Bob’s claim that Powers was in fact “the best” player on the team at creating open looks. If we’re accepting that he mostly took open shots that means he was simply dreadful at executing.

Not only this - his 32.6% from 3 was statistically worse than EVERY player on last year’s team who attempted a 3 except Mark (who we’ve heard has improved from 3 and isn’t in the game anyway to be a sharp shooter), Grant and Badalau (who play the 4). Not exactly an endorsement of a great relative shooter based on last season’s production.

But it doesn’t even stop there. Beyond the above less than encouraging metrics, Powers also really struggled with drawing fouls. He only attempted 19 FTs on the entire season (fewest on the team outside of Fall and Ware who didn’t play).

Now obviously - every year there are players who surprise (Francis last year for sure) so there’s certainly a chance Powers steps up his game and beats out everyone, but by all counts this would be a surprise rather than the default expectation.

I think Powers game as of last season’s end could be summed up very easily.

His prototype style resembled Geo Baker’s game (takes the same types of shots). Unfortunately, his defense is miles and miles behind Geo’s D as a frosh, his efficiency worse, and his ball handling inferior. Hence why he’ll have work to do to carve a major role in the rotation unless multiple guys turn out to be busts.

As a freshman coming in, a more reasonable comparison might be how the competition compares to a top high school program. Richie thought he would be comparable to a 3 star recruit with a lot of potential, but who needs time to develop. Pikiel is high on him and based on the video I saw I am too! How much he can contribute this year is unclear.

Yes absolutely. He’s a very good 15th pick up for the reason you state in combination with his measurables (can’t teach 6-10). Chris Wooten is a 3 star too - nobody is projecting him to start. At this point, there simply isn’t basis to think that way.

Diego is a much more interesting case based on the number of minutes he logged playing at a level that resembles BIG play. He clearly can defend, which is something Pike drasticallly needs.

“Geo Baker, only better”

I’ve seen this sentiment written so many times on this site and it’s so stupid. Geo clawed this program out of the dirt and was excellent for 4 years despite a lot of nagging injuries. Potential is just potential - until any of these guys are better than Geo, stop putting Geo down

He’s currently “Geo, only much worse”. Took Geo’s style shots and didn’t make nearly as high a percentage as a frosh. Not comfortable handling the ball as a frosh (neither was Geo, but Powers was worse). Geo wasn’t “great” at drawing contact, but Powers was clearly worse (only attempted 19 FTs). And lastly - Geo was a much MUCH better frosh defender. These aren’t small things.

Also, Geo happened to shoot exactly 32.6% from 3 on his career, and closer to 40% from the field. Geo did this on 5 3s per game vs Powers 3. He happened to shoot 36% from 3 as a frosh. Across his whole career he did this against starters and as, at worst, the second guy on the scouting report from year 2 on. Powers isn’t exactly drawing top assignments.

Show some respect. It is weird to me the reverence and respect Brian Leonard gets (deservedly) compared to what Geo takes here despite a higher burden to achieve the goal. We’re at the point it almost feels like other B1G fanbases respect him more than this one. They remember the daggers he hit

He also suggested that there’s predictive data that could reasonably lead one to believe Miteo is going to start. As if the stats he put up in a Euro under 21 league are comparable to real D1 stats (which they aren’t). Another major longshot.
Who said there is predictive data? I never did. If someone is going to question my opinions on man to man defense I would be interested to know their basketball back round - RUFAN4LIFE's also.

You concluded he’s going to start based on no information other than some highlights from games that are significantly weaker competition level than the MAAC. That’s the only information available. It can’t be based on anything else.

One of the most overrated Rutgers players of all time, and in the lower half of Big 10 point guards when he played. Not a great defender, 6'5" and couldn't rebound at all, no left hand and a fair shooter. Almost none of this is arguable. Yah, yah, yah, he brought us back from the abyss, he was this, he was that. After years of losing, Rutgers fans were desperate for a hero. How many great players give up playing right after they graduate - very few or none. I can't wait for the reactions to this.

But yet you think Powers is the next thing coming? There’s not one thing he did better than Geo as a frosh. Their shot selection was very similar. Geo just made more of them.

Again, I asked you a question.
What question is that? You started this thread pointing to Jerry predicting that Miteo would start as if that meant something. Then you said that Buca didn’t come here to be a 3rd string as the reason Miteo would be a 4 as if that logic made any sense at all. What - did you think Buchanan came back to ride the bench? Do you think Smith or Sydnor transferred here to ride the pine? Jones? All of them want to play. Powers wants to play. But there are only 200 minutes per game to allocate. Buca doesnt have anything locked up until he earns it at RU. He rode the bench at KState and if he doesn’t deliver he’ll be in the same situation at RU.

In my post at 2:40 PM. You must have read it as you responded otherwise to the post. I asked RUFAN4LIFE the same question. He hasn't answered either.

You're upset that @PSAL_Hoops and myself haven't taken your bait, got it. You presented opinions that others disagree with on several players. You're not the basketball sage you believe yourself to be.

I'll admit Powers is not a great defender, but Geo was never a good defender.
