I have never thought this rule would hold up in court.

There is no actual basis for the rule. If folks remember, a long time ago they forced intraconference to sit out a year. Then they revised it to more align with the NCAA’s rules but moved their football date up earlier than the NCAA for competitive reasons(playbooks and junk like that). Then they revised it to just completely follow the NCAA’s rule.

14.5.5.1 Transferring within the Southeastern Conference. A transfer student, including a graduate transfer, from a member institution may be eligible for intercollegiate competition during the individual’s initial academic year in residence at another member institution provided the student provides written notification of transfer to the institution within their
sport’s regular NCAA transfer window immediately following the sport’s championship segment (see, NCAA Bylaw 13.1.1.3.1) [Revised: 6/2/00; effective 8/1/2001; Revised: 6/1/08; Revised 6/3/21, effective 10/1/21, Revised: 6/2/23,effective 10/1/23]

UK, Mitchell, his lawyers, etc have known about this the whole time. Sankey even publicly came out about this before Mitchell even entered the portal. Yet he still decided to commit to UK. All these parties aren’t idiots. He may or may not win his case, but that’ll still be what determines whether he plays at UK. Not this rule imo.

Well this sucks; we know UK isn't going to go to bat for him since our Pres voted against him.
I'd say we're no longer a top 10 team unless McBride or Uzi are better than we think or Hawthorne is farther along than most of us think.
Get well Kam.

I keep hearing about “not transferring during initial portal window” but that language does not reflect that Mitchell is a senior and was forced to enter the draft and entering the transfer portal made no sense with Mark Mitchell limited information.

if that’s all the SEC has I suspect it’ll still come up to a court case that they are taking potential earnings from Mark Mitchell who should be making money from either NBA or NCAA
He can still go to another school and make money. A non SEC school.

Or he can stay at UK where he wants to be, and multiple separate court cases, knowing the SEC transfer rule is likely going to hold up because the UK President was among all the other SEC Presidents in reaffirming the rule and telling Sankey to punish anyone who breaks it.

The UK President basically screwed Mitchell here. He told the world that UK supports this rule.

So if they stonewall Mitchell, that will now be twice that the NCAA screwed us. Kanter and now Mitchell. Cost us a title in 2011 and probably a Final Four in 2027.

I mean, at this point, is there even a reason to keep watching this crap show called college basketball? They've decapitated the passions of entire fan bases at this point.

I don't think it will. Mitchell couldn't have entered the portal before if it was understood that his eligibility was done at that time. **** the SEC

This isn't the NCAA. Mitchell was on track to beat the NCAA.

This is the SEC. And more specifically, this is the President of the University of Kentucky voting to reaffirm the transfer rule. That's it. That's the nail in the coffin nobody could have seen coming.

But wouldn’t them having signing under old information slightly invalidate the signature.

also I wonder if signatures from presidents even matter in the courts.

I don’t believe many(any?) of the 5th year guys that went in the portal in the spring, made decisions on where they were committing until they were granted eligibility through the Colorado case or their own state’s TRO’s.

I’d love the NCAA and SEC to explain how a guy entering the portal April 20th with no college eligibility remaining then committing on August 20th after courts grant eligibility through an injunction is any different than players entering the portal on August 19th due to a court case then committing on the 20th. The defenses they’ve used elsewhere for protecting the athletes that already committed to play for these rosters goes completely out the window.

You act like SEC has unlimited power and no one can tell them what to do but that’s not true because SEC has to abide by the court.

it’s not like the SEC gets to go “he he he I’m a separate entity and don’t have to abide by anything”

I was worried about this with Mitchell even though he’s really talented.

Sankey and the SEC spoke out against this before Mitchell was ever ruled on by the judge in KY. They are clearly strongly against this.

Honestly if we want some rules on college sports this is the best thing for the future. Stinks for next year’s team, but in terms of college basketball in the long run I have no problem with players that have signed professional contracts not allowed and no players transferring within the SEC outside the portal window.

If Mitchell is eligible great. If he’s not and they actually tighten down on the sport I enjoy even though it’ll hurt next year’s team I understand it. Although UK could play him and have Pope suspended half the season from coaching and recruiting. That could be a win-win…this is a joke btw
This really doesn’t tighten anything for the future as this situation is a one-off that will not come up again. The SEC is trying to invoke a rule on Mitchell that did not apply to him with exhausted eligibility at the time.

And the argument he should have thrown his name in the portal just in case doesn’t apply either as the 5 for 5 was not even proposed until after the portal had already closed. There was zero reason for him to believe he would be given an additional year of college ball until it was proposed in early May and approved in June.

Players with no eligibility have been entering the portal for at least the past 2-3 offseasons. There is literally no rule against it. The portal is just a database for coaches. It's basically new age phone book.

The SEC is allowed to make their own rules and enforce their rules. Since their rules don't prevent Mark from going to a couple hundred other schools, it's likely not going to qualify for an Anti-Trust hail Mary by a lawyer.

This is totally different than the NCAA which can make a guy ineligible from all the D1 schools, and who just passed a new rule that seems to punitively impact Mark's specific class. There are legitimate grounds to believe the NCAA will ultimately lose their fights against Mark's class. It just might take months.

It doesn't matter how many other schools he can go to. It is as simple as he didn't put his name in at the time because his eligibility was exhausted at the time. How was he supposed to predict the future? I don't see how the SEC's rule can hold up under that specific circumstance.

Ok, so I double checked and I was right. The UK President is the voting representative for UK in SEC meetings.

He's the guy who voted in unison with the other SEC Presidents/Chancellors to reaffirm this rule.

We'll see what happens. But if this is what the SEC does, well, the hell with the SEC. This is just one more reason in a long line of them to hate this corrupt piece of crap conference. Mitchell should get his chance to play. I'm tired of the games that the NCAA and SEC are playing.
I'm tired of the NCAA for not applying their rules across the board to ALL teams, and taking their sweet time on vetting the players, depending on whether it was a program they liked or not.

Because literally thousands of players, across every NCAA sport, in Mark's class chose to put their name in the portal last spring. He could have. He chose not to. And now the UK President ruined any chance Mark had of playing at UK.

He didn't do it because there was no reason to at the time. That's why it is an easy argument in my opinion to win in court.

Agreed with this being a one off.

But if we’re being honest this is about the football players doing this more than anything else. The SEC told on itself with past iterations of this rule being more restrictive for “fall” sports than the other seasons. It’s because of football.

I don’t think anyone at the SEC cares very much about Mitchell joining UK on the court in a few months. He’s just getting swept up in it due to the football players…mainly the good ones going from Ole Miss(pros) to LSU a few days before the college football season starts lol.

The SEC is just trying to cover for the failings of the NCAA on multiple fronts(colluding with other conferences cough).

There were plenty of reasons. The media had been talking for months about an impending rules change. It's why thousands of college athletes entered their respective sports' transfer portals last spring when they had no eligibility left. If Mitchell wasn't paying attention, then his agent should have advised him to. That's an agent's job.

But Mitchell didn't choose a good agent did he? No, he hired his brother to be his agent. And his brother never advised him to enter the portal like Seth Trimble's agent did, or Aberdeen's agent did, or countless others. So here we are.

You're ******* obsessed with trying the "but, but, but" ********. I gave the simplest thing that in theory invalidates that rule. No shot the SEC's bs holds up.
