Mississippi State struck for a big in-state commitment, as the Bulldogs landed a pledge from the Magnolia State’s top offensive line prospect, Makylan Pounders of Byhalia High School. Respect it…… @CoachMiller_ #hailstate? pic.twitter.com/ayDRvzGawQ — Makylan Pounders (@MakylanPounders) April 29, 2020 Pounders is rated as the 14th best prospect in Mississippi by 247 Sports. Could this be the best group of recruiters we’ve had since Jackie. I think it’s easy to say they are already better than Mullen and one could argue better than Joe. It’s quite refreshing and impressive. From articles I’ve read, Spurrier Jr’s name gets mentioned a ton. He seems to be someone that could rise up the coaching rankings just purely off the connections he makes with these kids and his name alone

Mullen just got us ranked top ten in the nation for most NFL players rated 3 stars or lower over the last decade. Gonna be tough to top that. Rooting for Leach to do it no doubt but he's been here for 3.5 months 2 of which we've been in quarantine. They aren't better than Mullen & staff. Yet.

We did this with Joe as well & his recruiting rankings were right there with Mullen's

Just wait for the ratings.

That being said.... this staff does appear to be better at recruiting positions that we haven't traditionally recruited all that well.... WR & QB.

If they can maintain our traditional recruiting on defense & RB along with adding WRs & QBs that we have never gotten, then yes, they'll then be the best recruiters.

That's yet to be seen though.

Mullen sucked with WRs but he was pretty good with the QBs. I do expect Leach to be better than Mullen at both these spots but Prescott, Russell, Fitz is a pretty solid 5-6 year stretch at the QB position.

Croom got Russell & KT was at the tail end, but Prescott, Fitz, & the others were all 3 stars.

Mullen hit big on Prescott & adapted for Fitz, but his QB recruiting wasn't really very good.

That's just not true dude. He recruited the QBs he needed specifically to be able to coach up. He got his guys and it worked. Would they work as well with other coaches? Probably not but in no way possible does Mullen get a negative for his Qb recruiting. Please **** on him all day long for WRs and OL/ST for half the time but not QB and not DL. Mullen was never a star chaser. That never hurt him at the QB position.

I hear you, I hear you, I hear you.

I separate evaluation & recruiting.

Mullen evaluated QBs very well, but if you don't think he would've signed 93 rated guys like Robertson, you're nuts.

His evaluation was good, but his recruiting was not. I don't really want to debate this. I just don't think he really won any big recruiting battles for QBs. He just out evaluated & developed

Completely agree with everything you just said. Mullen was horrible at recruiting so much so he never wanted to attempt it vs Saban, Miles, Gus, Freeze. He'd rather just go find an athlete and try to coach them up instead. It's actually pretty amazing how well he did here with how poorly he was at head to head recruiting battles.

I share your enthusiasm and all that. But do kids 16 and 17 years old really even know who Steve Spurrier, Jr.'s dad is? Not sure his name carries much weight with that age group. May help with coaches who remember his dad and can convey that to the kids. Maybe it helps with parents of these recruits. Okay, nevermind. I withdraw my objection, your honor.

This is all accurate. When you think about it, Mullen only brought in 2 decent QB’s in 9 years, both of whom had a combined one other SEC offer between the 2 of them (and even that was Dak’s 11th hour LSU offer right before he enrolled in January). Literally every other QB he signed was in the below average to bad category even within his system. The lone exception was KT, who was and still is an unknown there.

In God we trust others brings facts. Dan Mullen is the best coach/recruiter in the history of MSU football. Look at his SEC record and what he inherited and what he left. I’m not sure JWS is even close considering what he left.

Agreed. Hard to complain about Mullen’s QB recruiting and subsequent production.

Mullen was a good recruiter, not a great. He and his staff was lazy and didn’t manage our roster well. He had some great classes tang weren’t great on paper, and he had some awful classes. He big JUCO class was great. The 11? class with Dak and JRob was great. There were some other good classes, but he didn’t know, or mostly likely care, to manage our roster, especially towards the end. Go back and look at his last few receiver and db classes. And our OL recruiting was never that good. Mullen is a fantastic identifier and even better developer of talent. But to be a great recruiter, you have to get the positions you need. We all hammered Ole Miss for years because they signed so many running backs and wide receivers and mismanaged their roster. They could get highly ranked kids but not at the spots they needed.

Which makes me wonder: Since KT is a Mullen style QB, why hasn't Mullen snatched KT either time he entered the transfer portal?

Maybe they don't like each other. Mullen didn't just ditch Fitz without saying goodbye. He ditched KT too. Mere hours after KT got thrown into the Egg Bowl for the first time as a freshman his coach ditches him without saying anything. You think KT coulda used a little one on one with his QB coach right after that game?? Didn't get it. I wouldn't want to play for Mullen again either if he did that.

You don’t accomplish what he and his staff did by being lazy at anything.

The Mullen can’t recruit myth is debunked by the number of players that he’s coached that are now on NFL rosters. And before the “yeah, but” crew chimes in, evaluating talent is a huge part of recruiting.

Best MSU football coach of my lifetime and it isn’t even close.
