Missed Holding Calls

Yeah, was at the game and had a tough time seeing how legit the calls were against Rutgers and non-calls against Washington State. Did see during Rutgers first drive a Washington State defender come up with a high forearm during a tackle that did not result in a penalty.

Took a look at the stats and Rutgers was called for double the penalties in numbers and yardage (11 penalties for 100 yds.) than Washington State. Also, for 66 pass attempts, you would think somewhere along the line, they would get called for holding, of which they didn't.

Was this a Pac12 crew officiating the game? Thought that the Pac12 crew didn't do such a hot job in the Michigan State - Oregon game either

you can call holding all the time by every team. go to all the boards every team claims the other team held all game

A couple of times, WSU's right tackle (and sometimes the guard) had our end in a one-arm choke hold, occasionally throwing him to the ground while holding his jersey, with the ref looking directly at it, and there wasn't even a move to throw the flag. Some of the holds were so blatant, and with the number of consecutive penalties called on us without a single one on WSU, I started to wonder what was going on. Then there were three flags on WSU, none of which was for holding, but it made me think they were going to even things out a bit, and then they started calling things on us again. There is no way you can run 80+ plays without holding, especially when the QB has 5 seconds in the pocket. Normally the refs are good at what they do, whether in football or basketball, which is borne out by replay. This time around, Wazzou was holding so many times without a flag that it was nauseating.

The problem is when holding isn't called once over the course an entire game. If we get called for holding on plays for which we were guilty, it's legit. But both teams need to be called for it, and I saw several holds that the ref was looking directly at and he didn't call it.

I don't think anybody is saying Washington State held all game. I do think 66 pass attempts and zero holding calls compared to double the amount of penalties against Rutgers (11 to 5 penalties and double the amount of yards), including 2 TDs called back, is very disproportionate and out of whack.

Watched much of the second half of Michigan State and Oregon last night, and Oregon got away with some blatant holds. Ever since the rules changed to allow o-linemen to use their arms more years ago, you could call holding on almost any play. That said, it's still annoying when obvious holds are ignored. Michigan State was flagged for a hands to the face penalty at a crucial point late in the game. Replay showed the Oregon lineman had handfuls of the guy's jersey, so it should have been offsetting penalties or a no-call. Any time a QB has much more than three seconds to throw there is probably holding, unless the d-line is completely outclassed.

One of my seatmates is a former OL, high school level, so over the years he's been able to point out telltale signs of holding. And, damn, we were seeing a lot of those signs from the WSU OL. When you see DL's partially or fully turned from a play, that's usually indicative of holding. And we saw a lot of that yesterday.

But not if your Washington St. because in 66 passes the referee's decided they were so good at pass blocking that they never held once. Now that OL coach of theirs' should have a job in the NFL next week because he is possibly the greatest OL coach I have ever seen in my life. Or maybe the referee's turned a blind eye to it. Gee I just can't make up my mind which could possibly be true.

There holding on every play. If just part of them game. The only time it is called is when it is outside the from of the body. Watch Rutger's oline closely and you will see everyone of them with a fistful of jersey.

True enough, but besides the point. What we saw yesterday was 66 pass plays on WSU without a single holding call, while RU passed half that much and got called for several. That is highly unlikely and smacks of Pac12 home cooking by the refs. That's what folks are complaining about.

Most likely it because WSU's offense using quick passes that are typically gone before holding could be called.

Apparently you didn't watch the game. Our pass rush was so bad that most of the time Falk was sitting back there for 5 to 6 seconds.

Sorry PSUnut, you clearly did not watch. The passes were anything but quick. And even on the quick passes (screen passes) the blocking WR was latched onto a CB before the ball was caught. Very obvious.

Rewatched the first half on DVR, and didn't see as much blatant holding as I would have thought.

One difference, too, is in the style of their play. Teams that shoot a lot of outside shots in basketball don't draw a lot of fouls, and teams that toss quick passes in 3 seconds don't give much opportunity for egregious holding. A lot of times, our 4 DLinemen were just not penetrating their OLine wall - we needed to bring additional guys for pressure, but we just didn't. We also didn't have a guy like Darius Hamilton demanding double teams to free up some of the other DLinemen.

You guys sound like conspiracy theorists. Missed calls are going to happen on both sides. Perhaps a lore legitimate beef is your O lineman's affinity for the chop block? A much more dangerous play...

Anyway, the last two games between between RU and WSU have been thrilling. It's only right the series ended in a split. Good luck the rest of the year. We will be rooting for you.

So your telling me you guys usually go an entire game with no offensive holds and this is common place. I stand corrected your OL coach is now the greatest in history and should go directly to the College Football Hall of Fame. I apologize to the ref's they did an outstanding job. My mistake.

there were plenty not called and the wr's on some of the bubbles were pretty blatant on a few as well
as the interior guys

RU's D stunk but the referee optics were ridiculous...just ridiculous..

just meet me in the middle...this was way too slanted

This. If the refs simply didn't call holding for either team all game, then there would be no issues. However, Rutgers getting called for holding several times (including a questionable one on an otherwise TD), while WSU didn't get called for ANY on twice as many pass attempts where some holding was clearly occurring, is an indictment of the referees.

Sorry 66 passes and not one holding call. There is certainly something wrong there. And I believe Washington State deserved to win. But get real not one holding call?

The fact they threw the ball 66x and didn't get one holding call was absurd. There were more times I saw holding than I could count.
Would love someone to make one of those recruiting type videos where they show the player ... Show every hold and put on YouTube.

Was at the game and I thought I saw WSU OL arm choking our DL on many plays . No calls.
Watched a replay this morning on my DVR and on WSU 3rd offense play of the game the Announcer said "Looks like WSU just got away with a No Holding Call".

When you combine the no holds for 66, with 2 late flags that pulled 14 points off the board...

Things that make you go hmmmm.....
