Do you think Cincinnati would make a play for Frank Martin? He seems to be just the type of coach they like for that job and I don't think he's terribly happy at South Carolina.

Cincinnati fans are thinking Thad Matta, NKU coach, and Van Exel early on. All seem fairly viable coaches. I think Forbes will get a look as well, he has done well and comes from a defensive minded tree. Reportedly a very solid recruiter, close enough to draw notice.

Thad Matta, as in former Ohio State coach? Not sure why Matta would be a candidate. He left Ohio State due to health issues. Maybe one of his proteges though. Jeff Boals has been pretty successful at Stony Brook. I know they want a big name and I'm not sure Boals moves the needle for them in that area.

And I knew van Exel would be a candidate...or at least that his name would be thrown around. Can he recruit? His experience is all as an NBA assistant and a couple of years with the Texas Legends as assistant and head coach.

Yes Thad who has also been up for two other jobs and turned them down but has roots in the Ohio area and was for the most part forced out at OSU.

He will be the first call made, he may say no, but he will have the job if he wants it and Cincinnati will orgasm harder than Memphis did about Penny

Cincy officially hires Northern Kentucky coach. Looks very similar to when we hired Self. Local guy, good recruiting chops, showed he can run a program with 3/4 years at NKU in post season including 2 tourney appearences.

If he keeps that team intact their won't be much drop off in their play.

Eh...he's a good coach for sure but he's going to need his players for his system. NKU played more up tempo and liked to get out and run. Cincy was that plodding defensive giant who just wanted to beat you up.

They'll be fine playing up tempo, their play was dictated by coaching not player ability. More importantly he was an assitant coach at multiple stops who then built his style on the players at NKU. His first year with a bad team was a losing record, next year was 20+ and has been really rolling. Three years means he was just now getting his guys. So not sure that style will hamper his early success.

That is true, I listened to his introductory press conference. Guy is smooth and said all the things I would want to hear as a Cincy fan.

He may actually be able to run his style very effectively with this team. It's not quite 40 mins of Hell, more disciplined than the Havoc VCU does as well. More of forcing the other team to be sound and focused the entire possesion from inbounds/rebounds to the shot.

Transition offense is the bread and butter, but a high rate of efficiency is the key in half court sets. Taken individually those things are all transferable from Mick's philosophy with out a whole lot of drop in ability. Having all combined though may require some adjustments and cause some struggles.

What really stuck out to me is the AD's comment about the culture and the integrated nature of the city and the university and how they used that as a strength. People leave and want to come back because of the culture.

I'm hoping that the strong local/alumni flavor we are seeing in the men's program and women's (local players making good) spreads to other areas. I think Wojick put a damper on the culture over his tenure and it hasn't been the positive it could be under Manning and Haith. When in doubt go back to your roots. That's how you got to where you are in the first place.
