From the Football Scoop (August 2, 2016) ...

Michigan: Former Gilman HS (MD) head coach Biff Poggi’s role at Michigan will be associate head coach / special adviser, according to a report from the Baltimore Sun. Poggi, who has been an assistant at Brown, The Citadel, and Temple was first rumored to be joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff back in February.

From this Baltimore Sun article ...

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/...l-as-associate-head-coach-20160801-story.html

"Poggi's job will be to advise Harbaugh on strategy and organizational structure. His position does not count as a coaching position and he won't be coaching the players, coaching the team or recruiting, according to the Michigan job description."

Sounds like a nice payday/thank you! Guess the Maryland folks are going through the same angst as Rutgers fans when Chris Partridge hired on. Guess if Rutgers got another $20M per year from the Big Ten, Rutgers could afford to give away these same kind of "gift" jobs.

You might as well just accept that this is going to continue to happen as long as the NCAA allows programs to add these types of positions outside of the limits of the traditional coaching staff. Just another example of how you have to keep up with the Joneses in college football. For instance, PSU just hired a JUCO DL coach to a recruiting position. It's no coincidence he has ties to Maryland, a state PSU targets heavily, and specifically Our Lady of Good Counsel, which has produced a number of highly recruited kids over the past decade.

It's one area you see across a number of sports where there is a big difference between the have and have nots is the support the players receive, namely through coaching positions.

No doubt Gilman has a player or two that Michigan wants and can afford to do this. The only way to stop is to standardize coaching roles by the NCAA. That isn't likely to happen.

My nephew goes to Gilman. This is different than the Partridge situation. Poggi was let go by the school. Though they were winning, it is a serious academic school and there were some questionable things going on with Poggi. People aren't sad to see him go.

Ash hired Hillsborough HS coach Rick Mantz to be an in with the NJ HS coaching community. He's very well know in that circle.

No comparison between Mantz and Poggi roles and situations. Mantz has a real job. Poggi is getting a thank you pay check. In politics, this would be called a "No Show" job. Does Mantz have a son on the current Rutgers roster? Wonder if the fathers of Rashan Gary and Jabrill Peppers get the same kind of jobs?

My mistake, I thought the comparison was to Partridge's job his first year or 2 at Michigan as Recruiting Coordinator. Both Partridge (now LB coach) and Mantz have real jobs. Partridges' connections to PC (Peppers, Gary, Bell) certainly was a huge factor in his hire, as well as Hillsborough being RU friendly and Mantz having a great reputation being a factor in Mantz's hire.

Poggi not only has a son at Michigan, he has a daughter at Michigan. Like Partridge in NJ, Poggi has great recruiting connections in Maryland. But his job is bogus. Do you think Harbaugh and Michigan did a national search to fill it?

his job isn't bogus, it's a legal loophole around the NCAAs limit on number of assistant coaches you can have. Saban has had a massive staff of "analysts" for years. If you aren't officially on the coaching staff, there are limits on what you can and can't do in terms of instructing players on the practice field and contacting recruits, but still plenty of work that can be done.

It's like being an assistant coach-lite. Was there a national search? Of course not. But do you think he's really being hired to recruit Gilman? He got fired from there. Harbaugh likely hiring him because he's a smart coach with connections and he was probably already going to hang around Ann Arbor quite anyway.

Saban paved the way in how to hire plenty of analysts and now all kinds of programs do it.

B.S. Paycheck. Money. Nothing more. Think of it as a football sabbatical. Big boy program move. We understand what is going on when you hire the parent of current player.

tell me, what is going on? Do you think Harbaugh had a master plan to hire Poggi back when Brady Hoke was recruiting him and the first 2 years Henry Poggi played under Hoke?

Did Hoke have some secret handshake deal in place 4 years ago that Harbaugh is now honoring? Were the administrators at Gilman part of the plan so they knew they had to fire him?

How long do you think Poggi stays? Harbaugh did the same thing with a Prattville, AL coach and the mother of a Stanford transfer (Lyons). It's called The Family and Friends Recruiting Plan. As this article points out ...

"What do you do when the NCAA won't let you pay players to come to your school? You essentially pay their parents and high school coaches instead ..."

How long Poggi stays? I have no idea. Probably not long. I'm just wondering since Harbaugh didn't recruit his son and he's a senior why Harbaugh would hire him to help recruit his son. Or is it to recruit other players?

Also convenient you bring up Lyons. He transferred to Michigan from Stanford, but never even played. His mom still works for Michigan, though. So is your argument that Harbaugh took him as a transfer to help recruit his mom to the job? Or did Harbaugh hire his mom to get a kid that would never play for him for 1 year as a transfer? Because that would seem like a poor use of money.

So confusing.

You and I know that money is not an issue for Harbaugh. Look at how much money he blew on his worldwide summer camp tour.
