I've been trying to understand what is causing that. They do average about the same amount of points per game, and 8 of Illinois 11 lossss are by single digits, and some to decent teams, but I still don't get why there is only a 8 point line

Road games are really hard to win, they are even harder to win when you are the talk of your conference.

The opening betting line is what Vegas is thinking, but the final line is not based on what Vegas thinks will happen. The final line is simply trying to encourage people to put bets one way or another. Vegas just trying to maximize profits while limiting risk. Vegas moves the line simply to try to entice betters to bet a different way.

Having said that, outside of a drubbing at Villanova, they have not been particularly world beaters.
