So I don’t even slightly follow soccer, but I know Messi, and this sounds like a pretty huge deal. What’s driving this?

Barca is a huge mess right now. Lot of old, under-performing stars with high salaries. Lot of turmoil in management. This is part of a purge and a new start for them. As great a player as he is, he's getting near the point where he'll start to decline, and he's never been a player who necessarily produced in the big games.

The question is, where's he going to go. Very few clubs could afford the transfer fee plus his salary, and one of those is Real Madrid, which will probably never happen. Word is Man City is interested.

I read that's he trying to exercise a clause that would end his contract. If that's the correct interpretation (it was someone translating a tweet originally in spanish), then there wouldn't be a transfer fee involved.

Well, it's not like City can get much better offensively with him or without him. Their issues are defensively, and even though I like Ake, I don't think he's going to be good enough to make much of a difference there. I think Messi will be a better fit in Italy. But if City really wants him, they'll pay more than anyone else.

He is about to the point where he will be on the slide due to age, if he isn't already there. If I was going to sign him, and I'm not sure I would, it would have to be for no more than a 2 year contract. He is 33, that is getting old for his position.

Sorry, I meant I wouldn't want him on Liverpool as a Liverpool fan. I was just saying it would be a very Man City thing to do to end up getting Messi.

2 separate thoughts I squished together.

Agree. I don't see Liverpool even being interested. At least I hope not. He's still an excellent player, but not worth the wages, with or without a transfer fee.

Imagine them both in the same town..

You guys are crazy. Dude just scored 25 goals with 21 assists this year after scoring 36 goals with 13 assists the year before. Ronaldo who is 35 just scored 31 goals this year. These arent run of the mill players that are showing their age. They are the best players in the history of soccer that even with a little drop off are as good as the rest of the best players in the world. Any of the top 6 EPL teams would immediately be the favorite to win the league by adding Messi.

Long-term contract possibility for Man City with a move to New York City FC in three years?

The clause expired in June (whenever the season was supposed to end). He thinks he should still be upheld since the season just ended. Sounds like it will end up in court barring one side backing down.
