BOYS + GIRLS BASKETBALL:
A 30-point mercy rule has been approved 27-0 by the VHSL Executive Committee.

Similar to the running clock in football, which goes into effect when a deficit is at 35 points or larger, Boys & Girls Basketball will institute a running clock for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign when one team has a lead of 30 points or greater in the second half.

The game clock will run, except during a time-out, an injury or technical foul. However, both coaches must agree upon the running clock going into effect in the second half when a lead gets to 30 points or more.

The clock will also not run during free throws so basically the clock will only run when the ball goes out of bounds, on foul calls that don't result in free throws and during substitutions.

I think they allow districts the choice whether to adopt rule or not. Another stupid move by VHSL,either have it statewide or don't have it. Don't delegate districts any choice.

It is not a matter of "allowing" the VHSL is not a dictator and cannot make anybody do anything.

The VHSL delegates too much stuff down. As the governing body of high school sports, measures should be taken to ensure everyone in the state is on the same sheet of music. It is unfair for things to be done one way for School X and another way for school Z. (or Region X or Region Z). After all everyone is chasing the same trophy. Rules should be uniform across the state.
