Hell, Rick Barnes made 3 elite 8's and a final four.

The question that has to be asked is, who did Arizona and X beat to get to those E8's?

Right and Rick Barnes is a fine coach.

I'm not calling Miller a Top 5 coach or anything, but he "could coach himself out of a wet paper bag".

If you get to an Elite 8 and a Sweet 16 at Xavier, you can coach. He just has never broken through.

Look, it is easy to say what you are saying...many said the same thing about Jay Wright and then he won 2 titles in 3 years.

I don't like Miller, he clearly has cheated, at the very least over the past few years- no one knows when it started....I'd guess after he couldn't make Final 4. All that said, the guy knows basketball, he has won, just never broken through...now he is a joke IMO.

It's pretty simple, you disagree with my opinion about Miller and Barnes. That's fine, I have no problem with that, everyone on here has their own opinions about every topic that is brought up.

FYI, the "wet paper bag" comment is just a figure of speech. I mean, you either break through the bag or simply yank your arm out, you wouldn't literally need to coach an arm out of a wet paper bag.

Obviously Miller is a good coach. You can be a good coach and be overrated. His name isn’t on par with the top tier, and really, some of his success is probably due to cheating anyway.

Coach K
Cal
Self
Roy

All would have at least a final four with those rosters. There’s more too.

Miller is a good coach in the literal sense, but he’s a choker of the tallest order. That matters more than anything.

He’s ok if we’re talking about top ncaa coaches. He’s awesome if we’re talking about anything else because they all are at this level. Doesn’t seem to need to be said really.

Yeah, but is he nuts enough to do it now while the microscope is in him? I mean, he's still landing bigtime recruits and he's on the lists of a lot if others. It's odd. Why would anyone want to play for that guy?

The checks are in the mail. :)

Kentucky is a blue blood.
Kentucky has a great basketball history by any measure.
Kentucky has the SEC and a blank check to support the program.
Kentucky has very devoted fans.

Memphis is not a blue blood but we do have a history of success.
Memphis will be successful again, and I think it will come sooner than later under Penny. We will see. No point arguing about it until after next season.

Cal was damaged goods when we haired him. He came to Memphis to redeem himself. He had 2 challenging years and the he got the Laurenburg players, Rose, Evans, CDR. He also had World Wide Wes. We were a couple of missed free throws and and a missed step out of bounds from a NC in his last year. You guys bought him. He took his players he recruited for Memphis. It's the way the business goes.

Cal never had a rep as a great X & Os guy. But now he gets blueblood players to go with a blue blood program and he is in it every year. His teams have always gotten better from first game to last as a rule and that to me says he is a pretty good coach because collectively he gets the job done.

Penny according to most experts, (read not fans), did a good job with what he had which was not a whole lot. He only had three weeks to put a team together. He had to learn a few things but he is passionate and knowledgeable and famous and the kids think he is cool. He has a an NBA coach of the year, a recent NBA star and a 20 year veteran on the bench that each fills an essential role. They have the resources to do whatever needs to be done.

The first thing Penny did was make sure he was building a double layer of accountability to ensure cheating wasn't going to occur. You don't have to believe that but it's true. They make sure the kids go to class, act properly (second chances but ultimately gone if you can't follow the rules) and they don't promise anything but the opportunity.

As for Crime, here is a heat map for zip code based crime. https://www.roadsnacks.net/worst-zip-codes-in-america/. Kentucky doesn't exactly look like a safe haven. In fact few places in the south and southwest look very safe. And Rural areas don't fare well either. In Memphis we have areas with a ton of poverty. Take out three zip codes in which the poor prey on the poor and you see a major difference in crime rates. Memphis has made three "cities you must visit" lists including two top choices. Lots changing here and lots going on especially drawing people back to the core downtown area.

Anonymous message boards seem to empower people to be rude, loose with facts and often abusive. I don't even like our own sometimes.

The next couple of weeks will define our roster for next year. It will end up somewhere between 1-7 when the ink dries. Good luck to you guys next year.

Take 3 zip codes out of Memphis and you see a major difference in crime rates???

Well duh. If I did the same thing for Detroit, it might look as safe as freaking BFE Nebraska.

And UK didn't buy Cal, UK is a destination job and if you qualify for that job, you get big money. It's that simple.

We didn’t buy Cal. We took him because that’s what happens when big programs come calling. In reality, you had a Kentucky coach until he was ready. Be glad, and most of the class we took wasn’t committed to Memphis.

Wall - undecided
Cousins - undecided
Bledsoe wasn’t interested in Memphis
Henry - didn’t sign with UK
Orton - already signed with UK.
Sno-Cone machine and secretary - OK, we did steal those but they both love Lexington.

Memphis fans have brainwashed themselves into thinking they deserved more than they got out of that deal. Lower your head, you’re a mid major team with one final four on the books and Kentucky hires Cal because he was ready to leave the stepping stone, and Memphis IS a stepping stone program even though you desperately want to be more and always have.

Every time Memphis has a run like this some kind of scandal lurks.

If you guys would settle down and realize that you’re a mid major team that no major conference thought could add anything, you’ll realize why you’re having to hire a name instead of a coach, why Cal wanted to leave, why you only have one final four on the books in your history.

I’ve never seen a mid major program be so petty, so childish, and so immature. Cal gave y’all some good years and elevated the Memphis name where it will probably never be again. You should be thankful, but you’re not. And he will never recognize you again.

Memphis will fall, just a matter of when. Historical fact shows this, Memphis cannot sustain success, and in the AAC, it won’t happen.

Right now you’re connected to some local talent that Penny coached in AAU ball so that’s the reason for the class. Eventually that will die down, teams like UK have seen guys like you come and go, come and go. Enjoy your stay, because it won’t last.

And remember, when you’re thinking you have everything UK has ( you guys never leave Memphis and see how much better basketball is in other places) just remember Kentucky nearly has as many FINAL FOURS as you have TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES. You aren’t even the best basketball program in your own state, and sometimes aren’t even the third best.

Lower. Your. Head. Mid. Major.

I am a Memphis alumn btw. I played baseball with Memphis across my chest. I’m in Memphis currently, lol. So I know what I’m talking about.

This is penny’s only shot. If he doesn’t take this team to at least a sweet 16 which is the equivalent of a final four, for Memphis state, then it will be harder for penny to compete. Josh pastner 2.0. It’s great if you can recruit, but you have to show you can coach. Parents aren’t going to want their kids to go to a dysfunctional team where it can screw up their draft status if penny doesn’t show he can win. Lorenzo Romar, cunzo Martin, and Shaka smart can all get generational talent every couple years, but if you don’t win, the players go elsewhere.

Sorry, just laughing at the back and forth. As a Memphis fan it is idiotic to think Cal should have stayed at Memphis if Kentucky is calling. Memphis outbid Kentucky for him and he still went. Robic said on Memphis radio a couple of days after it happened that the reason they went to Kentucky is because it is easier to win a National Championship at Kentucky. Anyone (Memphis fans included) who thinks differently is dumb.

Kentucky has the best coach for Kentucky that is walking the planet right now and that is why Kentucky is and will for a long time be rolling. Kentucky CAN have the wrong coach and it not go well at all see BCG and Tubby after he had to recruit.

Memphis has the best coach for our program at the moment. He's hot and he can teach kids that very few people, even Cal can teach them, how to be a brand. Penny's relevancy has more to do with him being a signature shoe athlete at Nike.

Having the right coach in today's college basketball is the most important part of the program. What was UNC under Doherty, UCLA for like the past few years, Indiana for a while. Blue Blood is a status but it doesn guarantee success. If I was UK the biggest concern would be how long Cal stays becuase following him at UK with the standards your fan base has is going to be difficult.

Morgo, I have gotta ask you something. Why do you live in Memphis?

I mean, it seems like every post you make regarding Memphis the city or the university is just dripping with hate. Yet, you live in Memphis, and graduated from the university, and even played ball there?! I live in Memphis too, so it's not like I don't understand that the city has its fair share of problems, but I actually enjoy the place. It has a lot to offer. If you are stuck here for family obligations, job, or whatever, I would encourage you to just make the best of it. It's really not that bad.

Per Coach Cal:

In the end, it wasn't about the money. Calipari knew he was going to get paid either way.

"I would have made more money at Memphis [next year]," he said.

He did have a private plane at Memphis. Before he was indicted (yes, very Memphis) I knew the person who's plane was used. After Cal left they pulled back on private plane use and chartering flights. Memphis is back to doing those things now.

Per Coach Cal:

In the end, it wasn't about the money. Calipari knew he was going to get paid either way.

"I would have made more money at Memphis [next year]," he said.

Oh yea, Cal speak. Sure. Cal complained at Memphis about his plane affairs. He was never happy with the arraignment. He did NOT have a personal private plane at Memphis. He had to borrow one and a lot of time it wasn’t available. This I know for a fact.

Cal has made a fortune at UK, well beyond anything he could have made at Memphis. There’s more figures than what’s in black and white. Of course, in Memphis fashion, you don’t understand the college basketball scene.

The Memphis area is my home. I had no problems with Memphis until the Cal situation. I grew up a UK fan, raised by UK fans and half of my family lives in Kentucky.

What the people of Memphis have allowed to happen to a once thriving city is criminal. Memphis has never been the same since the riots and it will never be the same. I am different because I can admit that, fine. You can’t, fine.

I’ve experienced Memphis, I’ve experienced UK, it’s not a close call. Memphis cannot offer what Kentucky can as a city (Lex), sports programs, or university. Again, I don’t have a problem admitting that and I’ve lived both.

Memphis fans are the worst. I had no problem rooting for my home school before I really discovered how petty and downright nasty Memphis people are. I know kids who have been treated like trash when they don’t submit to the Memphis way and look elsewhere. I’ve spoken to Joe Jackson and some others about how nasty Memphis can be.

You guys are on our forum, trashing the greatest program of all time, who did NOTHING to you and doesn’t even care that you exist, but WE are obsessed? How many UK posters are trashing your board right now with this childish little brother butthurt nonsense? None.

This is the first time Memphis has experienced some sort of relevancy in close to a decade. You haven’t even been eligible for the CBI in years past. Stop talking, and play. You don’t need to be on Kentucky’s board saying anything, because you’ve yet to even have a decent season in a very long time.

I get it, you guys are excited. Again I know your base, I know how excited you are. But everytime Memphis has something decent going, you ruin it with your attitudes and little man syndrome. Just f’n shut up and dominate your own region before you poke the bear.

It’s more annoying than anything. You are the little whipping boy of Louisville yet talk sht to UK. Does that really make sense to you?

Since you seem to be one of the rare Memphis fans who isn’t totally out of his f’n mind, run back to that garbage message board (that actually resembles what your program is) MT.org and tell them to quit making an *** of themselves all over America

Penny is taking the personality of your base and creating enemies everywhere. Now personally, I don’t care. Memphis could win a title, I don’t care. Better than the real blue bloods gaining on us, but eventually this mouthy trashy nonsense your program is peddling in will catch up with you like it always does, and you and the rest of Memphis will go back into hiding until another gimmicky situation calls for the mouth to run.

Does that sum it up?

You said "Memphis just pumps nonsense and the fan base eats it up." That is Cal directly saying it. Here is reporting on the story from the beat writer.

You are correct, he did NOT have a personal private plane at Memphis but he did have the use of a private jet for recruiting purposes.

The thing is, you guys are enjoying yourselves right now because you rarely get the opportunity to make national waves. I get it, but lots of programs come and go, come and go. And when those programs come, we discuss them, no one is upset or concerned with Memphis. You’re a mid major program who’s doing good on the recruiting trail for the second time in 40 years. Control your ego, Kentucky has 8 national titles, the most wins all time, and nearly more FINAL FOURS than Memphis has TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES. Let that sink in for a moment.

So not to be a *****, but your program isn’t even the best in your own state. A lot of times, it’s not the second best program in your own state.

Kentucky is another animal.

Now like I said I understand Memphis is having fun right now and you should. It’s been a long time since people mentioned your name. I get it. But you should know that while you’re just now being allowed to enter through the revolving door, others who entered are now on their way out. And you will too, because Memphis cannot sustain success and that’s measurable by historical fact.

Memphis was left out of the conference alignments. That’s ballgame. Throw every gimmick you can, because that will depend on whether it lasts for 1 year or 2.

Yes it is big when some are saying you might be relevant again, hang in there.

Yes, he had access to a private plane, but it wasn’t always available to him. I’m not debating it, it’s a fact. It drove him crazy.

He doesn’t have those issues at UK.

I guess it does. But crap, it's just basketball. Try to enjoy life a little. Good luck to UK in the future. I don't harbor any ill feelings toward Calipari and wish him well. He did a lot for Memphis in the 9 years he called it home.

As a Memphis fan as well I hold the same thoughts. Enjoy having discussions with another fan base and busting chops. History has proven it's basically always a good time to be a Kentucky basketball fan. It happens to be a good time to be a Memphis Basketball fan right now as well, I hope it sustains.

Very sincerelry Good luck to the 'Cats in the upcoming seasons!

Good god guys, I’ll meet you at central this week and buy if you agree to end the obsession with UK and return to your own boards.

We do not care about a back and forth. That’s fine. But Memphis is just too small to mess with when the conversation turns serious. You guys need to bark at someone closer to you.

We’ve had no less than 20 damn Memphis posters in the last 6 months coming over and running their mouth at the best program in history.

This would be like Duke football talking **** to Alabama during their upcoming game this year.

Stop making yourselves look foolish.

Hey, I'm all for any meeting that involves Central. But in fairness, I really don't understand your idea that Memphis fans are obsessed with Kentucky. I don't know if you are talking about me in particular or just your experience with fans in general, but it seems pretty logical to me that you are going to have Memphis fans chime in on a public forum when you literally have a thread titled "Memphis". I frequent multiple teams boards anytime there is a conflicting interest (I.E. playing another team, fighting for a recruit, etc.). I'm not here because I'm "running my mouth" or "obsessed" with UK. To me, UK is just another team that Memphis is crossing paths with on the recruiting trail, so I like to hear what their fan base has to say. I do the same with multiple other teams.

I will add that the size and passion of BBN is impressive, so that does make your board more fun to visit than many other teams. I don't want this to turn into a ridiculous message board pissing match, so good luck to UK. Sounds like you guys may have a strong finish for your 2019 class!

Memphis fans are everywhere right now because it’s been so long since you’ve been relevant. Problem is Memphis fans really believe they’re a major player, so times like this allows for the buildup over the last decade to flow out. I get it.

We discuss every team on this board. Most of their fans don’t run over and talk ****. UNC, no. Duke? No. Kansas? Not really. Memphis?
Over and over and over

Notice a pattern?

If you want to be taken seriously, then act like you belong. Just because we’re discussing recruiting and Memphis comes up doesn’t mean we’re obsessed. Again, we have nearly as many final fours as you have tournament appearances. This attitude is exactly why we laugh at you.

Try seeing it from our side. Reverse the roles. What would you say? I know many Memphis fans, I know what they’d say if Tulane pulled a good class and annoyed your board for months.

Post here fine. But do us a favor and tell your Memphis fans who are stirring up trouble to act like a real program and go away. Leave the conversations to guys that know how the scene works. It will work better for posters like you.

Really a simple sell for him right now:

1) I am Penny- I played pro...I know what it takes to get there
2) I have am Mitchell...played in NBA and Coached in NBA - he knows what it takes to get to next level
3) I have Mike Miller....Former NBA...knows what it takes to get to next level

two years from now kids be like...."y'all ain't winning and getting top talent.....I'll go blue blood...not fly by nighters"

Kentucky would never play Memphis. We already have scheduling conflicts and there’s no way to work in another mid major. Our fans are already going tired of the lightweight names on the schedule. We have to shift between blue bloods.
