And I'm pretty sure Larry Brown talked about how smart Rasheed Wallace is. I remember being surprised by that b/c Brown wasn't one that was scared to give it straight, and he more or less gushed about Wallace, who I would not have expected to be Brown favorite based on technicals and what I thought was lack of discipline. There is the UNC/Dean Smith connection, which apparently Dean Smith just engendered a loyalty that is crazy strong to not just him, but to UNC and its players, so that might could have influenced Brown's opinion.

I guess it depends on your definition of great.

John Wooden was a 3x consensus All American and national player of the year at Purdue.

Phil Jackson had a 13 year NBA career.

Steve Kerr had a 15 year NBA career including a stint on the greatest NBA team of all time, the 95-96 Chicago Bulls.

Par Riley was a great player. Larry Bird was obvious a great player that became a really good coach. There are other examples. Goat is drawing a conclusion because there were some high profile exceptions, like Magic Johnson or Isiah Thomas.

What rule are you sticking with- that being a great player and a great coach are distinctly different? Sure, thats true. In this case, you have a hall of fame coach who has won big at the college and nba level. You also have a coach that is able to bring in gobs of talent.

So you have talent on the court and talent on the bench. There are always exceptions, but Ill stick with that being a good recipe for success.

I think a lot of it has to do with why they were great players. I think with really great players, you run the risk of them not being able to understand how average players operate. I'm not sure Michael Jordan's skills translate to coaching. Is he supposed to say, "first, start off with an insane athletic ability, then have a pathological competitiveness that is psychologically unhealthy to drive you to work so hard that you take your already insane natural abilities and hone them into being transcendent. Once you do those two things, you can be great like me." Larry Bird was a good coach obviously, but supposedly he expressed his frustration with the players he was coaching. Said they just didn't work and didn't care, but I kind of wonder whether he translated them just not being able to will themselves into being better as not caring as much as he did.

Regardless of the validity of the superstar players can't coach theory, and I buy it most of the time, Rasheed Wallace was never a superstar player. Not Larry, not Magic and certainly not Mike. So that theory does not apply to him.

Rasheed Wallace is no Michael Jordan, but he's a four time NBA all star and has a championship. He's a bona fide NBA star. And he played until 2013 so he has some name recognition.

Memphis must be paying great these days. No way I would live there again for less than 500k a year.

While I lived there we had:
The Summer shooter. Nut bag taking potshots with a rifle off the hill next to summer Ave.

The crazy lesbian that worked at Kroger and would stalk, invade, beat then rob attractive ladies.

Watched the midtown/Liberty Bowl area turn into gangland.

Watched the mayor get his friends and family out of murder/wrongful death charges. He also made a mint by condemning the projects south of Beale St, so his cronies could buy it cheap and turn it into luxury river condos.

Gated community with security. Otherwise you have to live an hour away for safety.

Probably should have had another one in 2000. Went to 7 games with the Lakers in the WCF and had a double digit lead in the 4th quarter of that game. Sheed was the best player on that Blazers team who often would use Pippen at the point.

Your post suggests you're 80 years old. A lot of this stuff happened back before Elvis was renting out Libertyland and Led Zeppelin was playing the Mid South Coliseum.

Memphis is a dangerous city. But I live less than an hour away from it and I'm fine. And I survived a drive down Summer Ave last weekend.

I never said anyone should be scared of Memphis (or any city), don't get your panties wadded up. Again, don't act like you're living in Orange Mound and sending your kids to public school.
