I'm in the 40's....athletic and energetic. Not overweight (5'9" 170 lbs). I golf a lot. This past Spring I was swinging and my shoulder hurt, at first I shrugged it off and finished out the round. But I noticed that every time I would raise my arm, the shoulder blade hurt. And it even hurt to the touch. Then I started getting temporary numbness down my left arm in to my hand. It only affects that arm. Well it got to the point where my shoulder was getting better, no numbness (except while sleeping/laying on it). Today, my hand is numb. Shoulder pain isn't bad, it's actually feeling pretty good.

Now, I've done the normal self-diagnosis and feel that I tore my labrum. But others say "pinch nerve". I went to a chiropractor and he said no pinched nerve, at least he didn't think so.

Anyone else gone through this before? I don't like numbness.....scares crap out of me to be honest.

Thanks.

If only it was someone's job to study these symptoms, suggest experiments and then come up with a plan to correct these issues. I might even suggest we send these people to special schools for more learning.

I was hoping someone had something similar. That's all. No need to be a dirtbag about it.

Go to your MD and get it checked out. With the numbness it's likely he'll send you to a neurosurgeon to have it checked it. You're about the age when all the stuff you shook off when playing sports when you were younger comes back to say "Howdy".

I had similar symptoms from all those years coaches instructed us to shoulder block. Facemask into the solar plexus and a slide left or right with the forearm and shoulder to move the guy way you wanted him to go. My neck is a mess from the pounding.

Chiropractors are fairly worthless except as drinking buddies.

Could be floating cartilage settling into and back out of uncomfortable places. People are Sooo different, but many love to give medical advice based on a friend's cousin's aunt's experience. Unless Aunt Ethyl and you came from the same egg, you should probably start with a good MD that can make a good referral (if necessary.) Even then, you'll probably need good luck or divine intervention.:)

I've been reading a lot about Ulnar Nerve Entrapment. Signs, causes, and symptoms match up a lot to that. The numbness and tingling in the pinky and ring finger, elbow feels "tight".

Good advice. It could be any of a host of things. I had some pretty significant shoulder issues years ago. I figured I was looking at surgery, but it was diagnosed as arthritis. I changed some things in my work outs, and I use ibuprofen when it acts up on me. I've had pretty good luck with that for years now. Mine had a lot of pain associated with lifting that arm or pushing to the side with that arm (opening a door, for example). Once I got it under control, it hasn't been an issue unless I do something I know I shouldn't. Mine didn't include any sort of numbness in my arm or hand though.

I'm guessing shoulder bursitis. Swelling impinges nerves and pain radiates down arm.

I would guess the same as I have similar and many of my friends as well as we have gotten older. I have never had it checked out. Pain comes and goes.

One thing concerning is what Paul Azinger suffered from. Has same type of pain and was diagnosed with non- Hodgkin lymphoma, I believe. Very curable cancer but left untreated, it can kill. Have it checked out is best advice

Louie CK has a good bit about how once you hit 40 stuff starts going wrong with your body and that doctors no longer try to fix it because it's just your body wearing out. It starts at about 0:30 here.

Don't rule out rotator cuff as well.

I had a similar situation playing golf, probably from trying to swing too hard, and had similar pain every time I raised my left shoulder.

I stopped lifting weights and gave up golf for about 9 months and it seems to have fixed itself. In addition, I realize that I'm no longer young and have relaxed my swing, which I should have done in the first place.

I've been dealing with this since I started mountain climbing 7-8 years ago and got a Bowflex for training. Joint inflammation is a normal part of my life now, along with occasional shooting nerve pain. But I'm in better shape now than I was at 30, so it's a good pain.

I had similar symptoms. It was a rotator cuff.

Sounds like the rotator cuff... I've torn both...
right in my 30's... left in my 40's...
the weights thing Mountie mentioned above is true...

You've gotten a lot of advice. Get a referral to an orthopaedist. Numbness is never good.

Rotator cuff.

I had all the symptoms you described. See an orthopedic surgeon a get a MRI. It will get worse as you get older. Though mine has gotten much better over the years. Need to really exercise the shoulders to help. It will be painful just keep working it.

Get to a reputable orthopedic surgeon and have a MRI (or, at least, an ultrasound) of the shoulder. Sounds like it could be a rotator cuff tear. Need the scan to confirm the status of the muscles in that area. Surgery may not be required even if there is a tear. Try a rigorous PT program with someone familiar with such injuries, especially one that has involvement with 'sports medicine'. Good luck. I have much the same symptoms and have been diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear and am undergoing vigorous PT to avoid surgery that is very slow to heal and painful during the process.

Update:

Went today and had local doctor check it out. He said he felt pretty confident that I had a rotator cuff injury (probably tear) last Spring, and that it has healed....but I have overcompensated over time and have developed "tennis elbow". He gave me a steroid shot and said anti-inflammatory prescription pills and massaging/exercising should make it better and get the numbness to go away. Of course, I asked if playing golf would hurt it and he said "it could, but continue on your normal daily life". So....I went golfing today....hopefully I can get some rest tonight and get feeling completely back in my fingers.

Welcome to deteriorating joints. I used to lots of Advil, then naproxen, and now meloxicam.

Well, it's more "golfer's elbow" he said, but most people know the "tennis elbow" diagnosis. But I don't have the pain in the elbow that normally associates with this, but he said that's not always 100%. He said the tightness in the forearm, plus the numbness in only 1-2 fingers single the diagnosis of golfer's elbow and nothing major. We shall see. Feeling has come back to my ring finger, but the pinky is still a little iffy right now. I may just do a Ronnie Lott and whack it off....it's just a pinky. [thumbsup]

You should have refrained from playing today. I probably would have told you wait 48 hours before playing.

Overlapping grip. The steroid was making me feel pretty good, and I am stupid like that, so it seemed rational for me to play today. (You should know this from my posts;))

I'll probably regret it in 3-5 days when the steroid shot wears off.....

My wife hid mine and won't tell me where she put them. I would ice the injection site tonight. Was this an orthopedist?

No. Local doctor who played college baseball and said he dealt with his fair share of these type of injuries. Said they are relatively common. Said as long as I full movement and range and strength in my limbs, that I should not be worried about the tingling feeling in my fingers. Said if taken care of, it will return back to normal without surgeries.

Crap, I put a heat pad on it. He said heat or ice was fine. I just think of ice and I think more numbness....and I'm tired of the tingling feeling.

Ice is an anti-inflammatory action. Icing your shoulder shouldn't cause you any numbness in your fingers. I hurt my back, more spasms from playing a 5.5 hour tournament round and then standing in line for my daughters dance receital in 95 degree, I applied heat for two weeks and my doc said try ice and it immediately felt better. I have continued to apply ice packs for the last three weeks and it has gotten much better. I would tell you to take it easy for the next 24 hours and let the cortisone work.
