Tom Fornelli of CBSSports said what many West Virginia fans were hoping. Although it did not go down as they hoped, the Mountaineers may have gotten an upgrade at the head coaching position (all while reportedly saving millions of dollars). Neal Brown found plenty of success as an offensive coordinator at the highest levels of college football, and has won double-digit games in each of the last three seasons as a head coach.

Brad Powers, who covers college football for Pregame and used to work with expert prognosticator Phil Steele, agrees with Fornelli. The aforementioned three-straight double-digit win seasons stat? Only six coaches in all of FBS can claim that - and two of them are playing in the National Championship next week.

Stewart Mandel @slmandel

West Virginia, despite being last to come open, may have won this coaching carousel.
Stewart Mandel of The Athletic - and formerly Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports - says that even with the delay, the Mountaineers may have gotten the best candidate.

Barrett Sallee @BarrettSallee
An absolute home run for West Virginia. Neal Brown is one of six coaches who have 10 or more wins in each of the last three seasons (Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Urban Meyer, Chris Petersen, Bryan Harsin)http://bit.ly/2RaKt3I
Barrett Sallee of CBSSports called the hire "an absolute home run."

Have to say, I think West Virginia got the available coach with the highest ceiling this silly season.

The people who have interviewed Brown were really impressed BUT in a few cases there were coaches with more support and closer ties to a program so he was not hired.

Troy.....

Is Troy. They are a lot like Boise St.

They were a FCS power. Troy has good football people behind the scenes.

Neal Brown could be a great coach but lets not act like he didn't come from a winning program

Uh, they haven’t been FCS in like 20 years. Saying they are an FCS power and in someway extrapolating that makes them some top shelf juggernaut is silly nonsense. Until Brown came along, Troy was a mediocre team in the Sun Belt. Let me say that again so it sinks in... Troy was a mediocre team in the Sun Belt.

Look, we get it. Texas struggled to beat WVU with Dana Holgorsen, and now we bring in a guy that the whole country is calling a home run, I can see where you would be concerned and need to reassure yourself by dismissing WVU hiring Neal Brown.

But I assure you, people still think Herman is a good coach too. Most likely you guys will beat us next season in a transition year. No need for you to panic and come along peeing on our parade.

I follow Sam Houston St athletics probably more than UT.

Troy was in the Southland Conference before they made the jump.
Troy was a powerhouse football program at that level.

Even after the jump Troy was a consistent football team in the SunBelt.
Winning 8 games a year.
Won the SunBelt 5 straight times under Larry Blakeney.
