I don't know that I really expected anything better, but this really hurt to hear. With a healthy McPherson, I think that this team easily stands a chance to get back on a path to Omaha. Without him, I don't expect us to make it out of a regional

Yeah. I figure it's 50-50 we get him back at all this season. And even then it's a big question how effective he'll be.

That's honestly what Virginia did in 2015. Nathan Kirby missed a big part of the year and came back late.

Oak took Virginia to Omaha seven times and I believe three of those were as 2 or 3 seeds.

I know his championship team in 15 and the team we played in 21 were both 3 seeds.

Historically regular seasons have been up and down with him but once he gets in the postseason he’s got a super impressive track record.

I don’t feel like we’ve had just a bunch of big whiffs. I feel like our pitching has been mostly fine.

We just scored 9 runs in 27 innings in a home series. We might have gotten swept the last two weeks even with McPherson, with the way our offense has regressed.

I don't think it will tank the season. And that unfortunately happens far too often to a lot of teams every year. It's not that the pitchers behind the first 3 starters are dogshlt, it's just that they're not quite where the top 3 are. They may be the next year though. And, yes that can mean the difference in hosting and being a 2 or 3 seed.

Pitching has NOT been the problem. Even without McPherson.

Pitching hasn’t tanked the season. It’s kept us in the last 5 games up until the final out Sunday. The lineup and defense are what’s killing us. Also, Foster isn’t 100% either so its injuries to 2 of our 3 projected starters.

The game they pulled EMc was at the top of 5th before he pitched.....he said he felt it before the game started and it didnt bother him....he pitched 4 innings on it....he was told not to throw a baseball for 8 weeks....he said he would start throwing in 2 weeks regardless .....this is straight from the horses mouth 11 days ago...FWIW, HE thinks he will be back

I disagree. This team has enough depth with or without our ace to win a regional. And that's what we should expect. There is absolutely no reason we should not expect another pitcher to step into that "next man up" type of roll. All the way down the line. This might change my expectations for going deep in Omaha, but I fully expect this team to get their issues worked out and not only host a regional, but win it.

We didn't spend all this money and dedicate all this fan support to go down in a regional because one of our pitchers is out. That's not what this program has ever been about. I remember a year we had to start Jake Mangum on Sundays because our staff was so banged up. Don't remember the specific year, but that team either ended up in a super or in Omaha. (maybe the year we won in Hattiesburg and went to Baton Rouge super?)

Either way, I fully expect the M over S to find a way.

At this point its best not to expect anything from McPherson through the rest of the regular season. We may get him back in post-season but who knows how effective he will be? I would be shocked though if he gets back to the level of being our #1 starter again this year at any point. But he might can still help us here and there for a few innings in the post-season.

My only preseason concern was how good and deep was our pitching? I just didn't have the warm & fuzzies about it. Too many unknown pieces and sort of a wait and see, I guess. Looks like that's bearing some bad fruit the last 2 weekends. Maybe by the Regional, we'll have McPherson ready to go (hopefully) and give it our best shot. I think we host a Regional, but that's it. Anything else is gravy, including winning the Regional, for Mac's first year.

Played two years in the old ball park, the third in the stadium during construction, his final in the finished ballpark. His final season cut short by COVID. Talk about a man who has endurance, optimism, class and flat out guts. You still see those qualities in him today. It’s a joy to watch this young man grow up. One day he’ll have his statue… when we are no longer broke from paying kids. In the meantime, keep up the good work Jake!

All true except the COVID thing. It was actually his first full season in the minors that never happened due to COVID. He started pro ball in late summer 2019.
