I heard from a Jay booster they lowballed him with their extension offer. Nebraska should come knocking. Let him bring half his roster and put Fred on his bike.

I don't like arguing about stuff that isn't going to happen. Having said that, if they did lowball him it would be hilarious if he left them high and dry.

Not entirely sure I trust the source. Friend of a friend basically, but they say he's connected.

I highly doubt he wins in the Big 10. He has a niche and needs to stay there. Kind of like everyone that leaves Boise in football. Stay where it is easy for you and you are a king.
Yeah, I mean look how many national titles the B1G has produced in college basketball in the last 20 years. Big East only has 6 to the B1G’s zero

Do you have to be reminded of the B1G vs Big East challenge this past season?

Or that in his comparison to Boise State Peterson literally took Washington to the playoff

He may have a winning record, but when did he make multiple sweet 16s?
You're pretty dismissive about a winning record. I think he's done just a little better than simply winning more than he loses, but as a Husker fan being > .500 sounds pretty effing fantastic.

this reminds of a ‘behind the music’ about Toby Keith and after getting dropped by his record co., the dude who wrote all his hits said, ‘what’s wrong? we make hit records…you don’t like hit records…?’

I am a huge Toby Keith fan and did not know this story....without doing an ounce of research I'm wondering if it had to do with his political affiliation....

pretty sure it was in the mid-90’s before 9/11 and Mid East wars.
I think some new exec just didn’t like country music.

McDermott would be a major coaching upgrade. But I agree that he should stay where he is. The Big East isn't as tough of a conference as it is perceived to be and Creighton is finding talent that wants to play in that league.

I did not read every post in this thread so if this point was made I apologize in advance...but McDermott wouldn't touch this program with a 10' pole unless you coughed up so much money he'd just consider it a generational lottery ticket kind of deal. McDermott is the smoking hawt chick in this scenario and Nebraska is the fat friend.

Thank you.

the B1G is a bloated, overrated joke every year and proves it with its tournament performance. Big East eats the B1G’s lunch.

still a better basketball conference than football conference, though

The thought of McDermott going to UN is laughable.

Try the Skutt coach. Pay him enough and he could joint the dumpster fire to end his career.

McDermott was absolutely terrible at ISU even with a ton of talent. His teams do well in conferences where he can run a half court offense. He couldn’t get that done in the B12. He even lost an NBA lottery pick to transfer because of his style of play (and a mismanaged foot injury). He might be slightly more effective in the B10 but I think he is in his comfort zone right now. Hoiberg completely dug ISU out of the grave McDermott put them in.

He is a good dude and a good coach, but I don’t think he’s better than Hoiberg for this job.

There is no actual way a first year AD low balls McDermott in an extension. You'd have to be a special kind of stupid as an AD to come in and lose your bread winner head coach in less than a year lol. Think of the blow back. He wouldn't survive in Omaha and wouldn't get hired anywhere else.

There is a reason no schools go after Mac even though his agent did a great job saying he turned down OSU.

Providence has been avoiding getting exposed as not so good, but Creighton plays pretty disciplined basketball and now a top half BE team every time they take the floor. McDermott knows what he's doing.

The ISU job was 12 years ago. He's light years better than Fred.

Yeah, watching Mac coach his players non-stop is annoying. Winning is overrated. He’s won with all sorts of talent and different type of teams.

Don’t think the AD is the problem. Fr. Hendrickson has not been super supportive of the Athletic Department since he came in as President.

McDermott has an offensive philosophy and coaches it well and recruites well for what he wants. Hoiberg coaches and recruits what, exactly?

I like McDermott but he’s not accomplished enough, in my opinion, to land a top 10-15 job. With that being the case, why leave Creighton? Big East has a smokin’ TV deal and as long as NU athletics is a dumpster fire, Jays basketball is the biggest deal in town.

I follow ISU pretty closely. I am just aware of the comparison between the two coaches.

ISU fans wanted McDermott to work badly but it just wasn’t panning out. He had some amazing athletic talent at ISU with Craig Brackens, Wes Johnson, Diante Garrett, Mike Taylor - but his teams weren’t even competitive in most games. His teams would get worked up and down the floor. The prevailing thought was that McDermotts philosophy was not taking advantage of the physical talent that a high level conference gives him and his offensive sets were limiting production and athletic capabilities.

McDermotts 2009-2010 team was loaded with talent and they finished with a losing record and went 0.250 in conference. He was basically forced out after that. The following year with a completely overturned roster Hoiberg finished .500 and built a program that propelled him to coach of the Chicago Bulls.

Ask any ISU fan who they would rather have right now between McDermott and Hoiberg and it would be Hoiberg hands down, even with his performance at Nebraska and the Bulls. But I’m sure they are happier with Otz.

Mac played slug it out half court BB at UNI to match his team’s strengths. Sort of did that at ISU and failed there. Started out that way at Creighton year one but opened It up the 2nd half of the year into the CBI. Since then, it’s been open running basketball. He evolved as a coach. Jay Wright adapted his style after some early encounters with Creighton to shot more 3s. This year has been one of the worst 3 point shooting teams in his tenure at Creighton but again he’s adapted.

Would never wish for Mac to coach at NU for his own sake as well as Creighton’s program. Would love to know the great coach who would want the NU job. We will only get an mid major coach at this point.
