I like McCollum 's approach more than everyone dating back to ralf Miller in the late 60s. I'm just saying blowing a lead of 17 points because the point guard keeps beating our guy off the dribble, calls for a plan b. If you were coaching, would you have a plan b?
Did Iowa not win that game?

Not sure where anything else would have been "called for"

Tom Davis drove me nuts when he stayed in zone when teams torched us from the 3 like unlv and we did not make the final 4. I think a plan b is needed at times.
Defending the 3 was not a thing in 1987. Most coaches were fine with the opponent jacking up a bunch of 3's.

UNLV was one of the only teams using the 3 as a weapon, at that time.

Iowa built a 19 point lead with the zone and ended up losing a 1 possession game to the top seed in the tournament.

Davis put his team in position to have a chance to win. What fans have turned that game into, decades later, is ridiculous

I mean They tried Combs and someone else who were ineffective, and also not as aggressive due to fouls. McCollum will give up 2 vs 3 all day
Not true.

As I alluded to earlier, Iowa will give up certain 3's that most teams will not.

Iowa is one of the few college teams that help, one pass away, off the strong side. There isn't a single NBA team that will allow 3's off of that action

They did, and went to plan C even. McCollum has won 82% of his games and 4 National titles. He’s currently won 84% of his games at the Div 1 level. I’m confident he understands what’s best for the athletes he’s recruited for the system he knows to be most effective.
Huge Ben fan here. Have every confidence he will do great things at Iowa.

But you've got to stop qouting his success at smaller gigs. It's somewhat irrelevant and nobody cares. He's 16-5 and 6-4 in his current league

You seemed to have glossed over the part where I quoted his higher winning percentage at D1, in consecutive rebuild years dumb@$$. Again, leave me alone, stop responding to me.

Iowa ranks 18th in defensive efficiency which would be our best finish since the ‘05/06 season. And our tallest contributor is 6-9.

Tough for me to have much criticism about Ben’s defensive strategy.
Yep, maybe not perfect but I'll take his defense over most anything I remember seeing from Iowa in my lifetime, and that goes back to the Tom Davis days. Also, the offense is Top 30 nationally in efficiency on kenpom as I type this, so no slouch there, either. Room for improvement, sure, but I trust Ben knows his needs and will do what he can to get it corrected.

We need an athletic big in the post. Someone to contest shots & rebound. We lose quite a few rebounds because our guys aren't quite big enough to match up against some of the conference bigs.
I don't think they could afford true big that we both desire in offseason. Average Bigs command a lot more money than a forward or guard will. Hoping we can get 1 in the offseason a long with a scoring guard out of portal and I think we will be set

Would you consider Gonzaga a smaller gig? While both play weaker conference competition, they are still Division 1 and playing with the big boys.
How do you think Ben, the 6 players that followed, and however many assistants that followed, would rate the gigs?

You said yourself it was a weaker conference

Not sure how you are interpreting that as discounting Ben's success.

Ben's success at the smaller gigs can stand on its own, while at the same time being less meaningful, and less applicable to Ben's current job, than Tailgate leads us to believe.

Is he winning over 80% of his games this season? No. There’s a reason for that.

Ben's time at Iowa will be judged by his record at Iowa, not his record at Drake or D2.

Surely I'm aware of the content I've contributed to this thread. Therefore, it's ok to trust that I know what I have and have not said

You don't understand how calling Ben's success irrelevant can be interpreted as discounting that success?

I saw Tailgate stating that when Ben coached teams against other programs that had the same resources, he won. A lot! Nobody is questioning that the Big Ten is a different conference from the Valley. What is being stated is that based on his history at "smaller gigs", when Ben has everything equal, the guy has a system that wins.
