For his redshirt season his stats are impressive:

8 for 11, 103 yards, 72.7% for an average of 9.4.

23 rushes for 162 yards with an average of 7.0.

The beauty of the 4 game rule. We get to see the is a legit production player but we also know there is room for growth as we haven't seen him be put into a position yet where he is running the entire offense.

So glad we get him for 4 more years! He will be playing in the NFL.

oh I guarantee Luke McCaffrey will be playing in the NFL when it’s all said and done. The only question is this...will he be a QB or WR in the NFL?

Lamar Jackson if he stays healthy is almost making a complete new transitional change in an NFL QB . Sure there has been Qb's sprinkled in with the same kind of skill set. But he is putting up college type of stats while blowing some better teams out. If he keeps this up a few year more old school coaches will take notice.

22/29 76% 276 yds 1 TD 0 INT 9.52 per attempt - 18 rushes for 77 4.3 average and 2 TD. A different true freshman back up for Frost. In 6 games.

Garbage time stats are easy to accumulate. I think some of you get over your skis a little with the predictions. Last year at this time Martinez was a sure fire 1st round pick and a lock to be in NYC for the Heisman Presentation.

I like Luke as much as the next guy but let’s pump the brakes. At this point last year the talk was Martinez going pro after his junior year. Now some want to move on from him.

Luke has a long way to go before NFL talk. He needs to have a big year in the weigh room this offseason because he’s tiny right now.

Not all of his snaps have taken place when the game was already decided. Indiana for example.

I get the excitement but Indiana is not Ohio St, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Michigan, let alone the NFL.

He was 5/6 for 71 yards and 12 rushes for 76 against Indiana.

The point is that you are talking about a small sample size. Still far too early to be declaring him a future NFL QB.

Especially when the odds of him being named starter until he is a junior is pretty slim. Considering he has a “future 1st round pick and Heisman finalist” in front of him.

next year when Smothers comes in and gets some time, I imagine you and the Salty Dog will be telling us all how he is the going to be an NFL player as well.

He has been consistent no matter what situation he has played in. Come off the field rock cold and got a positive play. Came in for injuries and no negative plays.

He plays smart, executes at a high level, and produces. You couldn't ask for a better QB behind AM.

FFS! His looks good in minimal time on the field. Let’s see how he looks when a team game plans specifically for him and his skill set. The one game he had extended minutes and significant playing time, he left injured. All I am saying is that you have a very small sample size and it is a bit of a reach to declare him an NFL quarterback after 50 or so snaps. Especially after the publicity Martinez got after last season and he had the entire year as a sample size.

I truly hope he is that special QB. Between Adrian, Vedral, Luke and Smothers one of them should be pretty decent for what Frost wants to do.

BUT I'm also never going to count on any particular name like Luke after just a freshman season (and a limited one at that) given this year's experience with Adrian (who had a gangbuster's Freshman experience last year) and disappointed as a sophomore.

It of course will be one of those mentioned above next year but which one distinguishes himself is a mystery as of right now. And I don't care who it is as long as one of them excels.

Name a true dual threat QB like Lamar that has been to 2 superbowls? They have short careers and NFL defenses catch up to them at the end of a 16 game schedule. Especially past age 25.

As I said in my post if he keeps this up for a few years. There has already been a change for a lot of teams from traditional power run play action pass to more of a spread offense. There also has not been many Qb's with his skill set that will rush for 95 yards in a game and pass for 5 td. I'm not saying he is the 2nd coming of Tom Brady. But I am curious how he career will unfold.

Having seen McCaffrey play a few times in high school and a very small amount at NU, I can see where playing in the NFL could be a possibility. I can also see a situation in which he does not unseat Martinez as Nebraska's starting QB. But unless my single-minded goal is to breathlessly slobber over every decision Scott Frost ever makes, declaring both of these scenarios an absolute certainty seems rather odd.

Fran Tarkenton - different era, but a true dual threat back in the day. 18 year career, 3 super bowls.

According to wiki "He ranks fifth in career rushing yards among quarterbacks, behind Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Michael Vick and Cam Newton. He is also one of four NFL quarterbacks ever to rush for at least 300 yards in seven different seasons; the others are Cam Newton, Michael Vick and Tobin Rote."

Iowa QB Nate Stanley did come out against North Dakota State as a true freshman, replacing C.J. Beathard during one drive .... completed 2-2 passes for 45 yards on drive that led to Iowa’s final touchdown. Iowa lost 23-21 on a last minute FG. Watched it from my phone, while enjoying Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, back in 2016.

Sample size is important. Young players often need time to develop. Patience is virture.

Both McCaffery brothers look good in B1G play.

I know Stanley and his family. The only thing that is different about him today than back in high school is he learned how to read a defense.

I watched every game of McCaffrey's senior year and I see the growth. The guy is legit.

It will be interesting to watch him and his brother both growing in the Big Ten.

Nate Stanley has been a joy to watch. He didn't reach ever hurdle, but had a very solid career and it isn't over yet.

Really like the way McCaffrey runs and what you hear about his smarts and dedication in the film room.

He runs aggressively and unafraid which Adrian has not been good about doing consistently. Adrian runs like he's scared to get hurt again. Ironically, running like that will get you hurt because you take awkward hits.

Luke is going to be a work in progress as a passer. I think Smothers is going to make a splash when he shows up too. Gonna be a hell of a battle for then QB job in 2021.

All these dorks will turn on him once we have another shiny toy behind him...they say he is the next Lamar Jackson and then when we get beat by 35 and he has 3 turnovers they forget there are 10 other guys on the offense and call for the next best thing. Its like they only date girls who they haven't heard fart.

Personally, I was surprised Iowa took him. He was slow in high school and didn't get faster. IN fact it seems like he got slower as he put on weight. He always had a huge arm (90 mph fast ball in high school) and broke fingers of some WR's because he threw the football so hard. He wasn't that accurate in high school and turned the ball over a lot. But he could always make that incredibly electric throw.

When I look at his career based on what I know about him for a very long time, I'm not surprised he only had one big win in his career and it came at a time when nobody expected it - the Ohio State game.

Otherwise, he leaves his career without ever beating Wisconsin and didn't have any other major wins.

I don't know how Iowa will do post Stanley, but if he was the best Iowa had the last 3 years it can't be any type of upgrade.

Stanley is an NFL QB. He plays in a system that really hamstrings him.
