Washington's trouble with the TEAM wasn't directly related to his smartphone. He just didn't behave like a team player for team activities. His smartphone got him in trouble with California, not the Husker football team.

It's a shame that he wasted his physical talents, could have had a very successful career IMO. But he made his own choices in the end after having been given several chances. That's life.
from what I can tell, he's mostly rebellious against authority figures. Basically un-coachable unless he were to have a change of heart and buy in. Can't have loose cannons on this ship.

Yes, his attitude unfortunately was poison for team unity and discipline. He had to go, no one individual is more important than the whole team.
