Well, if I had $100M and it was the only way to make the wife happy...of course, at that point, I'd be reconsidering my choice in wives!

Ha!

If I hit for $100M I’d buy a house in the mountains and one on a beach. I guarantee-17n-tee that neither would have a $15K mattress. That is seriously silly..:

You should not be so quick to assume that is what the poster bought. Many mattresses get slightly dirty or slightly damaged in shipment. Anything other than perfect is rejected by the mattress store when they arrive. The mattress factory does not want them back. The trucking company, or more precisely, its insurance company, pays the manufacturer for the mattress and has arrangements with folks all around the country who take the mattresses for a song, clean and/or mend them and then sell them for generally 10 to 20 percent of what you would pay for them at a mattress store. There is one such operation in Jackson. So it is possible to buy a legitimate $4,000 mattress for $400 to $600.

Spend your money on shoes and mattresses because you are generally using your shoes or you are sleeping. Having said that save money and get a cheap mattress and fill it with money. A mattress full of money sleeps well.

I’m a big DIYer, and the most crazy sounding DIY thing I’ve done is build my own mattress. I’m not sure how I came across DIY mattresses, but I started researching it after looking at mattress prices in the area.

There are several sites where you can buy mattress components, but the most popular seems to be Arizona Premium mattress. The best recommendation I have seen is to get three 3” layers of latex from firm to medium to soft. If you get the top layer too soft, you can just swap the layers to firm it up. There are tables that recommend firmness levels based on weight, body type, sleeping position, etc. Just buy the layers you want and a mattress cover you want and zip them up into the cover. Latex is supposedly the premium mattress material even over memory foam because memory foam retains heat and breaks down quicker over time. Arizona Premium Mattress has coil springs too if you rather go that route.

I got a split kit from them and got different firmness for each side of the bed for me and the wife. I think spent $1400 for what would have cost a lot more in store. If the top layer wears out ten years from now, I just have to replace the top layer and/or mattress cover.

business. He knew what he was talking about. Had my king set for 6 months or so, and it's the best consistent sleep I've ever gotten. My back thanks me every morning after sleeping on a crap mattress for years before that.

I think some of the guys who started it (or manufacturing it) are out of Tupelo. Anyway, it's awesome.

I have been in the furniture manufacturing business for over 30 years. There is a guy near me that used to make medical lift chairs but retired a few years ago. Since then there has always been a few cars at his building but I had never inquired what was going on. A while back a friend asked me if I had any connections for a lift chair for a parent so I called this guy to see if he could get me one even though he had shut down his business and he obliged. He called few days later to tell me that my chair was ready for pickup. I meet him at this building and when I walk in I see three people cutting covers off of used mattresses and immediately sewing new covers with name brand labels on them. I ask him if this is his business and he informs me that it isn't, that he's just renting the building. I ask if its legal and never really get a straight answer. I ask where they are going and he said some go to the big mattress warehouses where the old ones come from when they pick up old mattresses and some are going to hotel chains. That mattress doesn't seem like a bargain now does it? To the OP, Sleep Number, it will be whatever you want it to be and you honestly don't know what you want until you mess with it for a couple of months.
Oh, I sleep fine at night and will be buying from there again if I ever need a bed. Its been a great purchase

Bought a memory foam mattress off Amazon a couple years ago. We loved it at first, but both started experiencing discomfort after about 8 months. The mattress had a “10 year worry free warranty”. After a couple months of calls and emails, they finally gave us a 75% refund because the mattress was delaminating and sagging.

We then got a foam/spring hybrid from Amazon. I didn’t like it at first, but do now. If I can get 5 years out of it, then I will be happy spending less than $300/5 years the rest of my life.

Mattresses are such a crap shoot. They can feel comfortable, but that doesn’t mean you won’t wake up feeling like you got hit by a truck.

I have had a sleep number mattress for over 20 years. They are pricey, but they have a much longer life than spring mattresses. There are other brands of air mattresses that are less expensive since they don't have to pay the lease at malls, so you may want to do a little looking around for them.

We have a king size (really two extra long singles shoved against each other), 3-way adjustable bases with lights underneath and USB connectors for charging devices) and top of the line foam mattresses from Mattress Firm. Total cost was about $7000 (they threw in two "free" pillows) including deliver and setup. It's the most comfortable bed I've ever been in. Supposedly the matresses are identical to Tempurpedic. No sag after two years.

We bought the Zinus memory foam mattress from Amazon for our guest bedroom. Feel like its a bargain considering it will only be used once or twice a month at most. Should get 20+ years out of it even if it sags after 8 months of regular sleep.

Bought a $6200 mattress like this for $400.

The idea that people pay over $500 for a mattress just is insane. And sad.

Nectarsleep.com. My 10 years of debilitating back pain gone. Kicking myself in the *** for not trying it sooner.

Got a sleep number in the travel trailer and I sleep like a baby. Both are good.

A pretty long read, but interesting nonetheless. Some kid starts a mattress review business on youtube. Gets all of these free mattresses to try out and review. Ultimately gets paid for each sale the company makes from a direct link from his youtube site. Ends up quitting his day job and does this full time. Gets into it with Casper and Casper ends up suing him. This goes on for a few years, all the while he's bringing down near 100 mil a year to sleep on a mattress and tell everybody it's good or not good. By the time I finish it I'm thinking to myself how stupid I am for not thinking of something so simple to make a shitload of money. Now that I think about it, don't read it. You'll only end up depressed like I was.
