Mattress advice?

I'm embarrassed to say how old our mattress is, but we definitely need a new one. I found an old thread offering advice here:

Anybody got updated info since 2018? The new thing seems to be "hybrid" mattresses. Is that really an improvement? The memory foam people spent years telling us that springs were terrible and now all their high end models have springs.

best out there still. For the king mattress and all the goodies that can come with it is around 15k. It's hard to say what each person prefers hard/soft etc...but get one that is at least 11 inches thick and has a free return policy and try it for 30 days. Most of the mattresses that are worth a durn cost about 1000 and up. Not counting your base.

I have no idea what kind of tempurpedic you bought, but wow...I bought the ProAdapt Firm (like plywood hard...awesome) last month. Mattress, Foundation, Two Pillows, covers for Mattress and Pillows. Foundation was non-adjustable. Just shy of $4700 all in. Spend the money. They last 2x as long as a typical mattress.

Signature sleep or Casper foam mattress. Order online and it comes in a box. I won’t buy anything from a mattress store ever again, nor will I pay stupid prices. Best mattress I’ve ever slept on cost me around $300 for a queen.

I know this is gonna sound shady but anyway.... 2 years ago my wife and I were looking and one of the doctor's we know gave us a phone number to a lady in Jackson that sells out of a warehouse. Being it was close to us(we live in Madison) I gave her a call and we meet at this huge warehouse. I would be scared to say they had 1000's of brand new mattresses of all different name brands. I found a Sterns and Foster Lux Estate and asked how much. She said $200 delivered and they would pickup my old one. I haggled a little just because it felt like the right thing to do in that part of Jackson. We agreed on a price and it has been the best mattress I have ever gotten. And you better believe I still got her number. I have no idea if she is still in business or not but a Sterns and Foster Lux Estate is great mattress.

FYI basically all these online mattress review sites and bloggers are compromised, and their reviews are influenced by whichever company is paying the most for referrals. Consumer reports seems to be the most commonly referenced legit source for mattress reviews as they’re not trying to cash in on referrals but it requires a subscription.

I plan on getting a Sleep Number mattress...

We got a Sleep Number and really like it. It’s really useful especially if the two of you have different preferences in firmness.

I like the idea of finding my best number and especially the new smart mattress that automatically adjusts because I turn from side to back to front to side all night. I always thought I liked super firm mattresses, but after some good nights in hotel rooms with super soft mattresses, now I'm not so sure. So the Sleep Number mattewss will give me options. I will also probably get the one with the mechanicals that lift up the head of the bed. I watch TV in bed now just by habit (didn't used to) and I can't use the situp pillows for very long. I have tried a bunch of different ones.

I did finally get to sleep on a tempurpedic and liked it.

I’ve almost pulled the trigger on a sleep number. Just have a problem paying that much for an air mattress.

Back sleepers are more towards firm. Side sleepers more towards plush. Plush allows your arm to rotate under without cutting off circulation.

Newer mattresses use smaller, tighter springs, that are individually wrapped to give support where it is needed. The manufacturers then layer memory foam with a denser concentration under your core, middle of the bed from side to side.

You should be able to get a decent mattress around 700 to 800. Do not even look at the $400 to $500 models now. They will not last and you see a lot of unraveling and side break down.

I am sleeping on a Sealy medium firm pillow top which gives softness when I roll over but firmness when I am on my back. I paid about 800 tax and all.

One thing you may not think about. The memory foam mattresses won’t give you any “rebound”. If that’s a concern for ya.
My wife and I have had a tempurpedic since 2011. I’ll never buy another one. Hate that thing. It’s all overpriced marketing hype. Unless they’ve changed them, it’ll retain heat too. You’ll sweat more at night. And unless you stay on your back all night, your shoulders will a ache.

We bought a Tempurpedic luxbreeze that is 13" thick. There are a couple with breeze- i dont really remember anything more about it because its a mattress and after the initial purchase, i dont care about the details.
It was scary expensive and 'on sale' for $4500 or so, but it was replacing a POS King mattress we had bought 5 years prior for $1500 and had given us 4.85 years of **** sleep.

I am always tempted to try the discount online mattresses, but at the time I had 0 interest in taking a risk.
Our mattress is perhaps the greatest thing ever created in the history of man. It is cool, quick to rebound in shape, and doesnt sink around you.


Just like mattress firmness is individual, so is the material. Someone may hate what I love not just in firmness, but in material. This **** is totally person specific which makes for really difficult reviewing.

We bought one this year, our old one was ~15 years old. Thought about buying online like everyone suggests but didn't want to mess with trying one out and replacing it 2 or 3 times before finding one we like.

So we went to Mattress Gallery. Spent a couple of hours there trying things out and bought one for about 2x what I'd planned to spend. Splurged and got new fancy pillows too. No regrets at all - I've slept like a baby for the last 6 months, and it eliminated some minor back / neck / hip pains I didn't realize was coming from my mattress until we made the switch and suddenly went away. Ended up somewhere between $1600 - $2000 for queen size mattress & pillows, don't remember exactly. It was one of the hybrid styles, but I couldn't even tell you what brand. Maybe Sealy??

Definitely have a budget in mind unless you've got money to burn, but don't worry too much about price. You'll probably only do this once a decade - so don't stress over spending an extra $500-$1000 to get something you like. I never realized how much my mattress and pillow affect my quality of sleep.

I have a king bed and needed a new mattress ... any mattress/dept. store was prob going to be at least around $1,500 for a name brand replacement. Then somebody told me about the hybrids, and how they'll work w/ an adjustable base, and I got intrigued. I bought an adjustable base w/ a remote control that raises the head, feet, vibrates (not a typo), off Amazon for around $1,000. Then bought an Ashley brand hybrid mattress, again off Amazon, for around $400 on sale. On top of the mattress I put an egg crate, followed by a thick quilted mattress pad, topped by some really good Target-brand high thread count sheets ... and it's the most comfortable bed I've ever had. It's so good that I put a price watch on the queen version of my mattress on Amazon, and when they went on sale for $200 I put the same set ups in my guest rooms, and every time somebody stays in there they say it's the most comfortable bed they've ever slept on.

I was leery of the hybrids, esp the cheaper ones, but I'll never go back now. Sure, they may be worn out in 5 years, and if they are I'll chuck them and spend another $200-$400.

Don't overthink it, so much of the crap you will read and hear in person is complete marketing bullscat. My in-laws were so excited they had bought some high priced adjustable mattress for their guest bedroom and couldn't wait for us to come stay.

What a pile of garbage, they were so let down when we told them it wasn't any different than the one we've been sleeping on at our house for about 8 years and we only paid a fraction of what they did and then bought a memory foam pad for the top of it. We've been married 30+ years and are only on our 3rd mattress and no back or sleep problems ever.

If you live near a Jameson mattress store, go try them out. They mainly make beds for resorts and hotels, so they are not as well known, but make some great products for not much more than the bed in a box. They make the Heavenly beds for Sheraton and JW Marriott.

I have a Tempurpedic in my home that I sleep the most in but I tried the ones from online For 1/10th the cost for my Starkville and beach places and I have to say there really isn't that much of a difference...certainly not for the 60 or nights I spend at those places vs my primary... I don't know if I will go a bed in a box when my tempurpedic plays out but I'll take a strong look at them...

I have been in the furniture manufacturing business for over 30 years. There is a guy near me that used to make medical lift chairs but retired a few years ago. Since then there has always been a few cars at his building but I had never inquired what was going on. A while back a friend asked me if I had any connections for a lift chair for a parent so I called this guy to see if he could get me one even though he had shut down his business and he obliged. He called few days later to tell me that my chair was ready for pickup. I meet him at this building and when I walk in I see three people cutting covers off of used mattresses and immediately sewing new covers with name brand labels on them. I ask him if this is his business and he informs me that it isn't, that he's just renting the building. I ask if its legal and never really get a straight answer. I ask where they are going and he said some go to the big mattress warehouses where the old ones come from when they pick up old mattresses and some are going to hotel chains. That mattress doesn't seem like a bargain now does it? To the OP, Sleep Number, it will be whatever you want it to be and you honestly don't know what you want until you mess with it for a couple of months.

We have had a king size Purple Mattress for 3 years. We paid around $1200. The thing is in the same shape that it was when we first bought it. It sleeps very cool and is comfortable for us.

I agree. I bought the Sams club version for about that price I think, about 5 years ago. I think it’s Starting to get a little soft where I sleep. For that price, I’m fine buying a new one every 5 years. It’s been fantastic.

Yes that was 15k. My wife picked it out in the store located in Salt Lake City 3 years ago. It was the loaded out model not on sale. They might have went in dry on me but that was the price taxes and all.

If you're a fat guy, don't get a purple. I slept on one for a year and put a dent in both sides. I'm about 280 lbs. I didn't have the one with the pocketed coils though. Maybe those are better?

Solay is the answer. I was told about them by a buddy I trust in the furniture

business. He knew what he was talking about. Had my king set for 6 months or so, and it's the best consistent sleep I've ever gotten. My back thanks me every morning after sleeping on a crap mattress for years before that.

I think some of the guys who started it (or manufacturing it) are out of Tupelo. Anyway, it's awesome.

Let me ask you two questions. What did you spend on the last automobile you purchased? Where do you spend more time, in that automobile or in your bed? My Sleep Number is over 20 years old and has no soft spots, no sags, and sleeps just like it did when it was new. I consider it an investment in my well being.

even a top of the line king size tempur-pedic should run you 5k to 7k, not 15k. Your point about investment is correct, but 5k is usually considered exceptional quality (a sleep number like you mentioned usually costs this amount). Scratching my head at the 15k. He mentioned “goodies” it came with. Must’ve been delivered across country tied to the top of a Bentley with a model to tuck you in the first time.

Well, you asked the wrong person on that one. I have a truck and a car that I paid less than $15k for both, in total... I do understand your point, however, and I will say that I'm thankful that sleep issues have never been a problem for me so I don't have any pressing reason to buy a better mattress than I have. My $300 Signature Sleep from Amazon has been incredibly comfortable to me (noticeably better than my old traditional Serta).
