Mullen won 69 games in 9 years, and would have won 70 if he’d stayed for the bowl game. That’s a lot closer to 8 wins per year than 7.

I would venture to say the times we have had 5 elite OL and a QB that can stretch the field has made every one of our different offensive systems work well.

That's what we've banked from our athletic budget the last several years prior to Covid. But you're a damn fool, so I don't expect you to know that.

This has been consistently my take from the beginning as well. I do think that what Mullen was doing could have produced over .500 if he wasn’t looking for new jobs every year, especially the year after he left, but I’m on board with trying this and not half assing it. I’ll take five years of it and see what happens. 8-4 running teams for the rest of my life just doesn’t sound interesting

Even if you magically took 3 of Mullen’s November losses and made them wins by removing the job shopping element, he still would have only been a .500 coach in the SEC while at MSU. We are quite simply a program that has a ceiling of 8-4 in the regular season unless there are very extreme and irregular schedule and personnel circumstances. It’s only been better than that twice in 40 years….1999 where we had a cakewalk schedule for the SEC, and 2014 where we had a cakewalk schedule for the SEC -AND- a potential future NFL hall of famer as the triggerman for the offense. Those two years were once in a generation occurrences.

Did their 2nd year coach do a complete 180 with their previous offensive philosophy then miss an entire spring of install when it has historically taken 2 years to install? The answer is no.

Not saying Leach's offensive scheme will work here but comparing our situation to ole miss is laughable .

Well, if you're going to compare, look at AR. They were the worst team in the conference. Look what they did year one under the same circumstances.
Hell, even MO has been better offensively than us under their new coach.

Actually, the answer is yes. Kiffin’s offense couldn’t be any more different that what they were running under Luke & Rich Rod.

There's no doubt that the success OM is having under Kiffin further makes us State indians restless and adds to the fire as well as salt in the wound

Thats one of the dumbest things I have ever seen stated here. Its a little different but they have always had good passing QB and recievers. We rarely have the tools to throw the ball. Our switch is drastically different

You are including bowl games to get to 8 wins per year. Mullen averaged 5 losses per year. His regular season average was much closer to 7-5 than 8-4. If you include bowl games, his average was closer to 8-5.

I'm not saying bowl games don't count. But when people are talking about 12 game expectations then it's not fair to throw in the bowl games. Ralph Cramden is right: Mullen didn't average 8-4.

Last I checked, bowl wins count for all coaches. (checks again), Yep, they still count. I do agree, saying he averaged 8-4 is just as misleading & wrong as saying he averaged “barely over 7 wins.” His average season was 8-5.

I'm all in on Leach for 4-5 years. I agree with Matt that our half of our fanbase is crazy for wanting to abandon this project. I think OM success is clouding their thinking. I consider this Leach's first year. If he gets us to .500 then he's done a good job in my opinion. He will get good QBs and WRs with this offense going forward. He also has something he's never had before. SEC credentials to win recruits thinking about non SEC schools.

Not my point at all, and I even said that. When people talk about season expectations they are talking about regular season. 6-6, 8-4, 10-2, whatever.

Mullen did not average 8-4 at State, he averaged 7-5. You can toss in the bowl games, round up, and say he averaged 8-5, but you can't get to 8-4.

Bingo. Good pass blocking o line and a true air raid q b that can make all the throws. Sawyer and Locke both have the pedigree.

Texas hs football is where Leachs influence is greatest, they run the air raid and produce the qartetbacks.

I get the company line is.... "doing something different."

however there is a false narrative being floated .... "we ain't never won doing it the old way." That simply isn't true. Sherrill and Mullen elevated the program running the ball.

Yes but if we had tried to do ANY QB recruiting between 1990 and 2005 we would have made it much easier on ourselves.

There were G5 teams slinging it all over the place so our excuse of good QBs are hard to find was BS. We just had ****** attempts by the coaches to help themselves. Look at the MSU record book pre Tyler Russell and Dak and see how pathetic it is.

If Jackie would have found ONE good offensive coordinator with ONE capable QB that could throw the ball and he would have won at least one SEC title. There will NEVER be another decade like that where LSU and Bama were both down. And because we didn’t have one guy that could hit the broad side of a barn, we couldn’t take advantage.

Surely half of our fan base doesn’t want to abandon already.

Surely half isn’t dumber than a box of rocks.

Surely, right?

Can't argue too much with you. MSU was a QB graveyard until Dak came along. One thing Leach should be able to do is recruit QBs. Jury is obviously still out on the 2 he recruited last year. No idea what he's recruiting for this year.

My thoughts.... he really wants to send the message since he took the time to upload one caller to YouTube.

He believes MSU is an average sec football program and always will be. Therefore we have to run Leach's gimmick to win more than our historical average. However these are not original thoughts. Bounds has said the same in so many words. They are both repeating the company line from the Bryan Building.

Regardless of all that. The 6 games left will tell the tale.

Matt grew up in Alabama. Was used to auburn and Alabama so that's his point of reference. He also works for msu and for the most part in his history has never said much of anything negative on msu. When he was working for cross he never said much negative on ole miss either. Also probably afraid of the ole miss homecoming queen. Matt does a good job breaking down plays but like anyone else who is paid by someone they tend to have certain biases. Somethings he is right on. Some he isn't. Some people that have followed State for a long time feel like there is a hold that state can never get out of. Some of that is true because we will never be the alabamas of the world in football. I will say that when Mullen was coach we had national relevance as a program a lot of that was due to him and dak. Every where I would travel people would bring up msu football when they found out I was a state Alumni. Before that nobody ever mentioned us. Now most people just mention leach and how he says crazy ****. Who knows maybe he can get us to at least the same level of play. My concern with him is losing games he should win even if he beats teams he shouldn't. That will always keep us from reach a higher tier in the sec. Say he is moderately successful in next 4 years. How long will he coach snd if he retires instead of resigning who do you replace him with once you spend 5-7 years building his brand of air raid.

Jackie's offensive coordinator from 1993 to 1995 was a fella named Bruce Arians. I think he's had some success since then and some even call him the QB whisperer for some reason.

Mississippi State’s all-time football record is 568-583-36. Matt was pretty much dead on. MSU is about a .500 team historically, and in SEC play, probably about a .300 team. Even Dan Mullen, regarded as one of our best coaches ever, had a 33-39 SEC record. We are trying something different because we have to. Will it work? I think it will, but it’s not a finished product yet. The lack of patience with Leach and this system is astounding to me. Last year was a wash because of Covid so this is his first normal season. And people are already wanting him fired, comparing this to the Croom years and saying we should never have canned Morehead. It’s crazy.

People who compare this to Croom need to go watch film. Morehead can go kick rocks.

Same ol lecture from MSU media. I don't necessarily disagree with what he said, and don't think we need to fire Leach. But why do MSU media, i.e. those that get paid by the school and also do podcasts and radio, feel they have to constantly lecture the fanbase on what they're expectations should be? This is really annoying and frankly quite odd. Why are they so obsessed with lecturing the fans on how they should think? Is this a MSU thing or just a college thing? It's so weird to talk to fans like this constantly. They create a strawman of a dumbass fan and then take them down. There's dumbass stuff all over this board and all over Twitter and everywhere else... why take dumbass stuff and then rail against it? Why constantly do that?

We had the biggest comeback in school history earlier this year. We dominated a team that is currently 5-1 and ranked 18th. We've had 3 other games 1 possession games.

Granted, we shouldn't even have been behind in most of those games. I just don't think "boring" is a good description for the offense. if we can see more of the 4th quarter offense earlier in the games, we could be quite entertaining..

I'm not a Leach fan at all. I've just decided to embrace the situation and try to have fun. I'm willing to be patient and see what develops.

I would be a whole lot more surprised if y’all finished 5-7 than I would if you finish 8-4. I’m very concerned about the Egg Bowl, and that’s not me just trying to kiss ***. I think Ole Miss is better, but I don’t think it’s a significant difference. And if we don’t get some offensive weapons back, your ability to take the run away will be a problem for us.

Y’all should kick Kentucky’s *** this weekend. I’ll be surprised if you don’t. You’ll beat Tennessee state, obviously. That’s 6, and then you can absolutely beat Arkansas and can absolutely split Auburn and Ole Miss to get to 8. My projection, and I said this on here before y’all beat Texas A&M, is you finish 7-5, and the Memphis and LSU losses haunt you, and you think of “what could have been”. Because you all recognize that if Leach goes 9-3 in year 2, the energy around the program would be sky high. Especially if it was capped off with an Egg Bowl win, over a probably top 15 Ole Miss team. It will still be dang good at 7-5 though, because finishing strong matters.

If Leach can keep Arnett or a comparable DC, and recruit comparable defensive talent to what he inherited, then he’s going to win a lot of football games. The offense will be fine, despite its current struggles, at times. Defensive recruiting is what will determine your future ceiling, in my dumb opinion.

One thing failed to mention is that at the same time Ole Miss also has a second year coach who has his team almost in the top ten with a Heisman trophy candidate at qb. This is why people get tired of hearing the wait five years approach before judging.

*Mr Belding voice* hey, hey, hey! His team “is” in the Top 10. #9 in coaches poll and #10 in AP.

I never get to actually say that, so I’m not missing my opportunity. Especially since it’s likely gone after going to Auburn this week.

What Matt was saying for the hard of hearing is this: WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO OUT RECRUIT ALABAMA, LSU, TAM, AUBURN, AND ARKANSAS. They will always get the 4 & 5 star OL players with are the most highly recruited players in high school. In order to mount a successful running game against their talent is very difficult and that is the reason for our record in football.

I think they constantly do it because they are constantly subjected to such dumbass stuff by those dumbass fans you mention. I'd get tired of it, too. To make money in the radio/podcast industry, you have to build a following, and the way to do that these days is to invite involvement from the public then respond to it. That's how he makes money from advertisers. So, he has to have callers and/or texters and/or twitter input from our fanbase, then he responds.

Hell, I get tired of reading it and I'm not even paid to respond publicly.
