Pretty good video. In one part he looks at how the receivers at Texas Tech and Washington State did the year before Leach arrived and then how they did his first year there. He also breaks down a few plays from Washington State's 2019 games against UCLA and Oregon.

Worth the 20 or so minutes:

Great video by Matt.

Here's what I got out of it.

1. The crisp route running & repetition at which our WRs run the routes & play pitch & catch with the QB, makes this offense very very good. Multiple people are open on most every play.

2. If Leach had a QB athletic enough to call QBs draws with, the offense would be virtually unstoppable. It mean, it's wide open every play due to all the DBs & LBs dropping into passing lane.

The main point is that an offense like Joe's is meant to get guy open due to reads & the schematics. Leach's offense gets guys open due to repetition, accuracy, & playing fast.

I was thinking the same thing on number 2 . You don't need 800 yards rushing out of your QB but if he's any kind of running threat there is almost 5-10 yards before he would be touched on most plays. Having to also account for a running QB in this system just really really stresses the D. Even in Dan's system we saw what that could do once Dak really improved his passing and was still a threat to run.

Jalen Hurts ran for 1300 yards last year in a very similar offense. If you can find someone who can actually throw and run, the offense is pretty unbelievable. Leach, however, doesn’t seem to land the dual threat guys that well. He has always gone for the gunslingers.

This was a sneaky part of Joe Burrow last year. He ran for 368 yards

That’s not a ton, but it’s enough to make defense respect you &/or take off 2-3 times a game & extend drives.

Leach does like the gun slingers and, to be honest I get it, because in this video on most the plays where the QB was there, the QB threw a pass for twice as many yards.

I get it, but also think if Leach could get some more athleticism at the QB position, the QB draw would become a dangerous weapon in the red zone & really open up his mesh routes.

At MSU, he’s going to have access to more guys that can do both throw & run, so I’m curious if he’ll evolve a little.

On Point 2, exactly. The play v Oregon with 4 verts in the red zone. A QB Scramble or draw to make the MLB think about the QB run opens up the TD pass. And if he plays it pass, you get some easy yards.

Last year, Coach Leach's team was playing in the PAC-12 . . . against PAC-12 defenses.

Receivers getting open and catching lots of passes and gaining lots of yards against PAC-12 defenses??? Not very difficult.

Cornerbacks of every SEC defense will man-up at the scrimmage line right right in our receivers' faces and cover us one-on-one. We don't have any wide receivers fast/quick enough to run away from those cornerbacks and create separation.

Similarly, our tight ends and running backs can't run away from the safeties or linebackers guarding them man-to-man.

And that's generally how it goes in football: if I am two/three steps faster than you, then I am going to beat you on every single play.

SEC defenses generally don't play any zone against us.

Hmm, a QB that can throw and run. Sounds like he wants what every coach in America wants.

And this sounds strangely like, uh....Garrett Shrader? The guy who is apparently getting overtaken for 2 gunslinger QBs.

Didn’t realize we were already running Leach’s air raid the last few years. If all they do is man up every play, the mesh routes will eat them alive. And Kylin Hill will absolutely beat most LBs one on one in coverage. Yes SEC defenses are more athletic than PAC12, but let’s not act like they are a perfect machine.

Also the statement is just flat out wrong. They all mix it up with zone and man. Off the top of my head I know the first offensive play of last years Bama game was zone when Tommy Stevens threw the interception.

Tulu, Heath, & Peyton are quick enough & also most SEC program don’t have 5 good DBs that can keep up with 5 good WRs that are running crisp routes.

I think it’s going to work & I think it’ll even be better once Knox, Nabers, etc get on campus

Oregon had the #9 ranked defense last year. Better than every SEC School but UGA and UF.

Sec Defenses do play zone. And man to man is more susceptible to the crossing and pick routes shown several times.

And speed helps but good routes will get you open every time.

Wes Welker ran a 4.65 and caught a lot of passes in a mike leach offense, If speed won "every single play" he'd never have caught a ball.

I think you have to take in account Matt’s not showing the plays that failed. Also, As someone else pointed out, you have to think about the Jeffrey Simmons type of DL in the SEC. you aren’t going to get away with man on man blocking. On the flip side I think KJ is a better QB than Wazzou has had so he will hopefully be able to make those quick accurate throws under pressure.

Yet he literally did with the 4 verticals play against Oregon. Someone didn’t watch the clip.

Agree about the DL and I’m interested to see how the wide splits work out against more athletic defensive fronts.

I agree, If Shrader can show the accuracy and reads needed, he could be a monster for Leach.

And yes I think Leach would use him in that role if he thought it would scrore points and win football games. Leach may not change his overall theory of offense but he does add wrinkles and change play calling to match what the defense is giving/taking. He just does what is working. He had back to back possessions in one TTech game where he handed the ball off to the running back every play. TTech scored both possessions. The D adjusted and he went back to throwing the ball.

Note: My boss is a TTech grad and huge fan of Leach. I've seen and heard many examples of why he thinks letting Leach go was one of the dumbest moves TTech has ever made.

I too hope that we are highly successful on offense this football season.

I like Washington State's cougar head logo. Whoever came up with that was pretty creative.
