So all the people who convinced themselves that a contract extension was necessary - they thought Penn State was in search of a mediocre coach?
Other than the usual suspects, Smart, Riley, Day, Swinney, Sark, etc, Matt weighs in as the # 15 highest paid coaches in 2025.

Matt makes more than, for example, Franklin, Cignetti, Bielema, Fisch, Venables, Dillingham. (3 of these 6 were in the CFP last year, and likely 2, Cig and Venables will be again).

Of ALL thse coaches, which one is lacking in ever achieving anything? NU is such suckers.

I don’t think it’s *** kissing to want to see what our current sophomore and freshmen classes turn into before we give up on Rhule. I do think it was a mistake to extend him but that wasn’t done without the blessing of the boosters of substance.
So you're not even *** kissing Rhule and co. You're just *** kissing the boosters?

Rhule isn't going anywhere for at least three years thanks to that extension. I don't see next year being any better with the harder schedule. It won't be until year five that he truly is on the hot seat. And then he will get a sixth year unless year five is a complete dumpster fire. Hopefully he figures it out by then but we are stuck with him for a while because no other team wants him right now.

Understanding reality isn’t kissing anybody’s ***. I’m just mature enough to realize that incessant bitching on a messsge board doesn’t change anything. We are what we are and there’s nothing you or I can do about it and honestly I don’t think firing Rhule would help even if we didn’t owe him millions. I’m resigned to the fate that I’ll die before the Huskers ever reach the level you want.

Well, history shows Bert won a couple BIG titles.
This year they played RUT, WISC, MARY, PUR, WASH, USC, OSU and IND.
Waaayyyyy more difficult schedule than NU this year.
They're 7-4 just like NU and did you see NU get embarrased last night?
Come on, give it up dingle.

I won't say doesn't give a fukc about winning, but he definitely doesn't that burning desire that is required.
When one has lost as many games as he has you just get numb to it. He excepts losing.

The great ones would have been sick last night. Matt probably ate well, did some stupid videos, and trying to hunt down pat mcafee for some air time.

As I said, Rhule should have begged PSU to hire him.

I think the idea wasn’t that he was great. I think it was the fear of starting over again. I didn’t see a single person advocate for an extension.
In the days following the extension, did you miss all the shoutdowns aimed at people who said it was a mistake? You would have thought we shoved someone's grandmother down the stairs.

Of course the same thing happened when Moos gave Frost an extension. But all the posters who defended that decision now have selective amnesia.

It’s not Rhule’s fault. In 163 tries, 86 weren’t on Matt

after tonight, Matt will have to win 10 straight games to have a .500 record. LOL

And we gave him an extension. That’s so sad it’s funny,

Yep, we never learn for some reason. When it's someone elses money and results don't matter, it's easy to spend it. All that loser had to do was win at Minnesota and we could have unloaded this guy, but he even failed at that. It's pathetic what the folks in charge have done with the football program. Just complete negligence and grifting to the point of being criminal.

Pointing out that losing our best player is hurting us when we are playing the most talented team on our schedule is detrimental? No, people who react to every game with the emotional temperament of a female toddler are what is wrong with this program. Everyone wants Nebraska to catch lightening in a bottle like Indiana when reality says that isn’t likely will continue to bring us down. We are heading in the right direction with Rhule. Stop judging the rebuild on a weekly basis and see where we came from. Bunch of mental midgets.
Lightning is a bottle??? Matt is in in his 3rd season here. The team is just as soft as it has been since Bo left. How many years will you give Matt? I just turned 70. Can I expect Matt to start winning more games and games against ranked opponents by the time I reach 75? I'm starting to feel like Jerry Jones. Why don't you stop judging Matt on what you hope he does and start with his record. Stats do not lie. He never has been a consistent winner. Show me where the Huskers have improved when you look at their four losses. Huskers got ran off the field by their opponent's running backs. Then in these same games the offensive line does not show up at all. What was the best win this season? Cincinnati? The seven teams the Huskers beat have a combined record of 30-49. Cincinnati and Northwestern are the only two teams with a winning record.

I doubt he has to sacrifice anyone. We’re without our 2 year starting QB. He’s at 7 and won on the road at UCLA with a true freshman starting his first game. Reality. The official story will be “progress”, I will note that I’m kind of ambivalent about the level of progress we’ve seen. I’m also patient enough to want to see what his first full recruiting classses of guys develop in to. I gave Pelini 4 years before I gave up on his schtick. I’ll do the same for Rhule.
Get ready. I fear it is inevitable that Matt will fail.

Sad fact is that not only did no one want Rhule enough now to warrant an extension, nobody else wanted him when we hired him either.

So you're looking at: 5-7 ------ 7-6 --------- 7-6 (likely) and ----- 6-7 (bowls included). Seems about right to me. Matt is showing some serious progress for sure.

I haven’t “stroked Rhule” once. Not once. I’m just dealing in the reality of the situation instead venting like a 13 year old like some on here. Fire Rhule. Keep Rhule. I don’t really care. Don’t think churning coaches would matter anymore. We are what they think we are and IMO our best chance and maybe our last chance in my lifetime is for Rhule to succeed. 😕

The only shout downs I saw were aimed at people thinking we should fire him. I saw NOBODY cheering the extension. It was unwarranted. Yeah some people see progress but none of them that I recall applauded the extension.

Washington and Illinois are home games. Washington plays bad on the road and Illinois will have a new quarterback. I like our chances in both games.

Maybe. I’ve probably about the same time left at 98.6 F as you and my thought is that maybe the best chance for me to see the Huskers win significantly is for Rhule to do it. I’m not sold on his DC but that’s for higher powers to decide.

You don’t remember the “keeps us out of the coaching carousel” posts? Or the people claiming it was necessary to keep Penn State away?

Like I said - selective amnesia.

I think he is a troll...fine line between a disillusioned supportive fan and a troll in 2025. What I find amazing is that people still get mad...like we've seen the same thing for 3 years...he should have been fired immediately when he hired Satt, Mcguire, Barthel, Raiola, Foley. They were friends or family members. Keep in mind he doesn't actually call plays or coach a position so bringing in terrible coaches is a really bad sign as to how serious he was. I never wanted Rhule, but gave him a chance exactly until Satt was hired...I knew we had no chance with an 80th ranked offense.
He hired a dude who had play calling responsibilities stripped from him and who almost ran EJ off. Imagine this team without EJ. Should have never got an extension.

Neither of those are calling Rhule great but I never saw those. They aren’t false statements now are they? You don’t for sure that PSU wasn’t interested before the Minnesota debacle made it impossible. Rhule would have an easier time putting together a staff and winning at PSU than he does in Lincoln. Heck, look at the interim head coach and the job he’s done. He would stay to work for Rhule?

The a$$ whipping at Minnesota happened Oct. 17 and the extension was announced Oct. 30.

https://huskers.com/news/2025/10/30/nebraska-announces-contract-extension-with-coach-matt-rhule

So if the "Minnesota debacle made it impossible," NU really was bidding against itself.
Yes unless it was already done but not announced. I said immediately that it was an unnecessary move. 😕. I posted multiple times that it should have waited until he had proven he deserved it.

I’d hire an experienced coach from the FCS who’s in his forties or early fifties next time around. Old enough to know better but young enough to still be hungry, and wanting to win at a higher level.

That or a boy wonder. THE BOTTOMLINE THOUGH is that we’re not going to be hiring a new coach for years barring Rhule getting caught in bed with an underage prostitute. We’re pot committed.

Staff changes will definitely be forced upon this offseason. I don’t think boosters are so keen on giving $35 million to a staff with a lot of holes in it.

The more Matt over-promises and under-delivers, the more separation between the fanbase and their letting go of their monies. And rightly so.

Or someone like David Braun? If Iowa beats Nebraska and Northwestern beats Illinois (both of which could very well happen), Nebraska and Northwestern will end up with the same regular season record. Let that sink in.

Didn't read 99% of the responses in this thread so siap, but it seems really obvious to me Rhule isn't going to have much success here and now its a waiting game fot a new coach. Not terrible enough to get canned today (hence the waiting game) but not good enough to get ya over the hump. Purgatory.

Even Nick Bahe and Bo Ruud have turned on Rhule. This all gets worse before it gets better, if it ever does get better.

Next season is going to be ROUGH. How many wins do you see on the 2026 schedule beyond the meatgrinder Big Sky and MAC x 2 openers?

Regarding the extension, I thought there were no more years added and no raise. We basically we got a higher buyout and Rhule gets a million dollar raise every time he makes the CFP. Since the latter isn’t going to happen, Rhule got nothing.
