I do not want Campbell and have said so from the start. Nor do I want Leipold although he has more upside. I just do not want another "flavor of the month" coach who got a hot hand for a few years at a perennial doormat school and suddenly became the next Bear Bryant.

There is no sure thing. Not even Urban Meyer would be a sure bet to turn things around. And who is out there right now who would be both a really good fit for us and who would be willing to come here? I really have no idea. Maybe the dude at Coastal Carolina but then I read something on this board about him not wanting to live in the midwest or something. Mat Rhule? Callahan part two if you ask me. Another failed pro coach with his tail between his legs and limping back to the college ranks. Ditto that with O'Brien. Which is why Meyer would be no sure bet either. The gild is off that lily if you ask me and for a ton of reasons.

Fickel? Maybe. But isn't he just another flavor of the month dude who had a few good seasons at Cincy? And does he really want to be at Nebraska anyway? Notre Dame opens up and the dude is gone as fast as he could get out of town.

I really wish we had a better offensive line. Because if we did we would have a good chance of winning 6 or more games this year and getting to a bowl which would, in my view, argue strongly for hiring MJ. But we do not have an offensive line that is worth a **** and we are going to lose to Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan because of it. We might beat Wisky since it is in Lincoln and I think we beat Iowa this year in a defensive struggle 4-2. I think we end the season 5-7 or 4-8. That will most likely cause Trev not to hire MJ since we need a coach to come in with some hype and mojo to kickstart recruiting and transfer portal stuff. And if we go 5-7 there won't be much hype around MJ.

But maybe that should not matter?? Maybe just maybe we have the best damn candidate for the job already in the house.

At this point Campbell has played himself out of the Houston Nutt leverage your school for a huge raise. ISU fans no longer have to worry about losing him to Nebraska.

I get not wanting the flavor of the month, but what does that make Mickey? I agree that there is no sure thing... that we can hire. I do honestly believe Urb IS a sure thing, but that's not gonna happen.

no current power 5 coach that has had consistent success in the neighborhood of what the fanbase expects is going to leave for NU

that leaves 2 options

1. current power 5 coach that has had decent success but is felt to be limited by the school they are at with the hopes that they can take the next step at NU

2. some guy who hasn't had any power 5 success as a head coach - but hasn't not had power 5 success either (ie ...1st time power 5 coach)

pick your poison - option 2 is likely the cheaper option as it doesn’t involve a buyout

Is there a Nick Saban like coach out there who appears pedestrian at a school like Michigan State but will take off at a big time school?

Try-hard-Matt couldn't handle Amart.

To get Klieman y'all will have to fire Trev and hire Gene Taylor. I've told you this before.

They play good defense but that offense is tough to watch. Special teams killed them vs KU too.

He took a loaded-with-nfl-talent team rated #6 preseason last year to a 7-6 record. The fascination with try-hard-Matt is the product of media hype, not on-field performance. Likely won't be bowling this year, could be 0-9 in B12 play - and that's not a reach. Huge mistake if N hired him.

I look at it something like this. When Mickey took over NU was 1-2 and had OU up in a week. So even though it was a loss, to me, I don't hold that loss on Mickey, so I'm saying he took over at 1-3. Now NU is 3-3.

That means Mickey should be held responsible for an 8 game season. If he can win 2 more games he finishes 4-4, which given the clusterfcvk he took over is pretty good.

We all know the defense was a disaster. So far his promoting of Busch has paid dividends thus far. Will that continue, I don't know, but the extra bye week after Purdue will bode well for more changes, more defensive concepts to be installed, and some of the newcomers will then have 3 games under their belt to try to improve on. And the starters have a chance to be a lot fresher than had Chin been running the track events on defense.

The OL? Tell me Trev doesn't know this is a disaster unit in terms of talent and ability? What would Trev expect considering he does know the game pretty well? As long as they continue to shuffle players, show they are trying everything to try for a little improvement, isn't that what a head coach and position coach is paid to do?

The more changes he makes, the more capable players he introduces to some playing time and the more improvement the team shows the more it stands to benefit Mickey. I don't think those improvements will necessarily result in more wins, but we have to be realistic. This team has a lot of shortcomings.

I also think Mickey or the next coach "may" benefit from Trev being open to the possibility of cutting down the roster size. I do think he is a bottom line guy, and if something isn't paying a dividend, it may be time to make that type of change. If Trev doesn't want NU to live in the past, that is a pretty strong part of the "old" NU, and one that could be eliminated.

Has NU given a scholarship to any walk-on this year? If so, I haven't heard.

In what could be a lengthy process before a new head coach is announced, the longer it goes, the more clarity is shown on some early names. Campbell has lost favor with a lot of folks. LL seems to have as much or more than 3 weeks ago when Frost got the heave ho.

Kiffin is mentioned, but I think zero chance he leaves Mississippi, cause I think he has his eye on Bama when Nick decides to retire.

The talk on Aranda has cooled down a bit. I think no way would Gundy leave Okie State. I just think the candidate list is getting smaller and smaller. Of course, none of us know what Trev is thinking.

I'd be happy to see Mickey get the job. We know he can recruit, he seems to understand athletes, and if Trev says we will open up the checkbook for the very best OC, DC, and get as large of NIL deals as you can to bring in some OLmen that can play at this level, it could begin to turn around.

Go after those top JUCO kids at whatever position they play, with an emphasis on OLmen. Same with DLmen.

I agree. He is just ok. A little above average, but not spectacular. However, after Scott Frost, someone like Matt Campbell looks good by comparison.
Seems like a silly reason to hire someone just because they look good when compared to Scott Frost. Even a below average coach looks good compared to Frost. Now is the time to finally hire a good coach. Hiring an average coach (or less) is what the Huskers have been doing.

My feeling is that it will Matt Rhule. Here’s why. Carolina got trounced by the 49ers, today. After this loss Carolina is 1-4. I don’t think their season is salvageable therefore I believe Rhule will be let go in January. That makes it really easy for Trev to hire him. No fuss, no muss. I am just not positive he is the solution. It is not easy hiring a good coach or should I say it is not easy finding the right coach who will do a great job.
