He will get his opportunities. To be honest he passed up a wide open 3 at the top of the key and then threw the ball away... immediately IU went on a huge run, no shock he was benched.

Pike should continue with the same rotation as he played today, and Mathis’ playing time will depend on how he plays in the 1st half of games. If we get “good Mathis,” maybe he plays in the 2nd half. If it’s “bad Mathis,” he only plays if our guards get in foul trouble.

This team will be better for shortening the minutes of the 8th player, ultimately will be our 5th guard game depending, by virtue of increasing minutes for Harper, and to a lesser extent Young/Geo depending who is getting the offense going.

Obviously he’s in the doghouse now. How does he get out? He didn’t even play in the second half
He isn’t in any doghouse. He has had a couple of bad games coupled with the rest of the team including RON , GEO , JACOB, AND Caleb playing like crap. Today Geo , Paul and Caleb played really well in the first half especially defensively. Geo decided to reappear with Pike putting him back in charge and ball movement was the best it has been since our early games. Jacob almost cost us the game with his low basketball IQ and lousy defense down the stretch and his stupid passes and being selfish. But we need him and we need Montez. Geo hit 4 threes and Paul hit a couple and Caleb 1 but we are going to continue to attack the basket and get teams to foul us so that we shoot more foul shots. Montez does that for us and Hobbs and Knight have to continue to coach him up , to initiate contact on his drives first , then keep his head looking at the rim so he finishes more consistently. Montez is still one of our better players on our team , we need his three stroke to come back, we need his slashing to the hole and finishing , we need his free throw shooting to improve, and we need his defense and rebounding . Montez will be fine. If Geo is more of a threat Montez will be more effective.

There’s no question Tez will have the ball in his hands again to win games.
Jacob will be the difference in games also in the future.
Neither should play that much until they stop the wild drives to the hoop. They can both go there successfully, but not out of control.

I also don't think Tez is in the doghouse. He will get his chances. Today Geo was back to starting at PG and I believe that was an excellent move. Jacob is instant energy off the bench. Tez will have to make good contributions when he gets in. He is a very good player and I believe he is very close to the guys on the team. The team comes first and today the guys getting most of the minutes were functioning well. The team ended the streak and now must have more confidence and just play again like they were early in the season.

He became fixated on those few games where he had some very good scoring efforts but with many young ones you need to play within your team and yourself in order to succeed.

I would have had him in the last three minutes or so when we were up by 5, defense was they key end game, probably sub for Paul as he had to be tired and Montez is the better defender. I think he should have gotten some time in the second half but I hope he stays positive because he can help us down the road.

Just looked at PSU game as comparison
27-61 44.2% Mathis 3-12, Young 3-8, 6-20
PSU 27-55 49.1%, 21-36 2, 6-19 from 3
Rest of Team shot 21-41 51.2% lose by 8

Today 27-53 50.9%, Young 3-7
Indiana 24-56 42.9%, 14-40 2, 10-16 from 3
Rest of team 24-46 52.2% win by 4

Better allocation of shots, much better Interior defense and rebounding this game with a bigger starting lineup, now clean up the 3s defense.

I thought about that too watching the game, but then also realized he's a liability at the FT line and also is still hard to trust to play under control in tight situations.

I called out his attitude end of last game and they way he just blew PM off when he was trying to talk to him. Makes sense now.

All out of frustration, great kid.
But needed wake up call big time.
Getting benched is the ultimate wake up call

Exactly right. He’s a gifted athlete capable of being a game changer but he gets in his own head and becomes his own worst enemy. A little time on the bench next to Coach Knight will do him good. We need him but he has gotten a little selfish of late. He’s wired pretty tight and needs to calm himself down a little and get composed.

I think it was a case of Paul matching up well on D. There will e games where Paul would get exposed on D and in those gamesMontez will play more and Paul’s minutes will go down

Young and Mathis are the guys I worry about.
Most of the team was celebrating the win. Young not among them.
Young did not look happy leaving the court.
Very negative look as he walked past Mulcahy as Paul was talking to him.
Was he pouting about playing time?
Was he pouting about not starting?

Mathis will play less if we play more zone D. He’ll get his minutes when we play more man to man D.

I like the fact that he goes to the basket but his problem is he ONLY looks to score to the basket. He sucks in the D and just need to kickout to a shooter instead of challenging three guys.

Oh, I'm not anti MM. I think he has been reset in-season each of first 2 years lol.
I'm a fan.
Pikes got quite a mix of personalities to manage and motivate.

Going from the minutes that he was playing all year to zero in the second half may motivate Montez. Or it may go the other way and he loses interest. Up to Pike to make sure we get a positive response. No one, on any level, likes to go from starting to not playing at all. Young provides a spark off the bench like last year. Obviously key for us to have a successful season.

He will just have to show up in his minutes he gets and if he plays well, he will get more. We will definitely need him, he's just had a bad run. Against Indiana he came in and in the first minute had a wild drive that led to a turnover, and then awful body language after it.

The only thing dumber than some of those "I don't care who is between me and the basket I'm taking it to the hoop" drives is some of those inaccurate alley-oops to Cliff. Sometimes we look just plain stupid on offense.
