MASSIVE changes needed on this basketball roster

Easy to just blame the losses on the Big 12 teams we've played, but that's not it. We've blown games (except Kansas) the same way. We don't look prepared. Make the same mistakes, same players. Our current lineup isn't suitable to play in the Big 12. Changes are needed.

If we don't win the next 4 games, it's nail-in-coffin time.

Screw changing players. Huggs is over the hill.
I won't argue that it may be time for a change. But the way we are playing, STUPID. That's not totally on the coaches. They didn't tell Stevenson to commit one of the most ignorant 4th fouls out there. They didn't tell our PG to throw a wild cross court pass when the game was tied and 3 minutes to go. They didn't tell Jimmy Bell to foul a shooter 25 feet from the basket. And they didn't tell our FT shooters to miss a bunch down the stretch.

It’s already mail in the coffin time. I’m not calling for Huggins job, but I am tired of him threatening changes, complaining about missing 2 foot shots, missing free throws, guys not practicing….yet CONTINUE to not make any rotational changes

Changes need to be made.

Mitchell
Matthews
Stevenson
Wilson
Johnson/Touissant

Sub Okonkwou as first big off the bench. Wague and Bell aren't cutting it in the Big 12 schedule.

Who brought these guys in? Who decides who plays? Who drills the team? The buck stops with Huggs...the same place it starts.

I'm no hall of fame coach but I would start Wague, Konkwo and Bell would be third. Those missed foul shots killed it. Mitchell fouling out pretty much sewed up the loss. He had 15 rebounds 14 points.

Also took some unintelligent shots in the most important time of games.

Need to make free throws when it matters most. They miss so many at the worst time of the game.

I think Okonkwou has more upside that either of the other two. Play him more, but we need to go with a smaller lineup to start. Mitchell, Stevenson, Matthews, Wilson, and PG (Johnson or Touissant)

EDIT: But, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express so my opinion is worthless.

I agree. With that night Mitchell had he should have known to play smaller lineup. They couldn't guard Mitchell.

But without Mitchell, we lose by 20+. So I can take some of his missed FT's with how hard he played and how well he rebounded. Stevenson is looking more like McNeil. Big games when we need him, we don't get anything. And by starting Bell/Johnson we are playing with 3 offensive threats.......but really, Matthews hasn't been the same since coming back in the lineup either.

No way he walks away with this program in a downward spiral. He will want to "fix it" and get back to the NCAA tourney before hanging it up. I don't see that happening this year, and to be honest, by relying on the transfer portal, it may not happen next year either.

Nothing wrong with transfer portal. Problem is taking so many of them in one year.

And so WVU football and basketball are both in a coma for an indefinite period of time.

It is on the coaches - simple - those who play stupid sit - not complicated.

The fix starts with getting rid of Gee and his minions. Then get a coach that gives WVU a brand. Nehlen had it, Rodriguez had it. Stewart and Holgorsen won games but didn't have a brand to use.

Huggins became Big 12 success when he went to Press Virginia. Fans loved it, players and recruits loved it. He should have stayed with Press Virginia and he might still be winning.

Press Virginia was more out of necessity than it was by design. Being a dominant pressing team is tough to put together, and the ceiling for such a team isn’t great. Then on the contrary if you don’t have the right mix of players teams will eat it up.

The best post Final Four team IMO was the 2021 team. Unfortunately the guys on that team didn’t mesh, and we ran into the dreaded 2-3 Zone that Huggins can’t figure out. But on the surface if we have a core of guys like McBride, McNeil, Oscar (I know he left midseason), Culver etc we should be winning a lot of games and be a threat to go deep in March. We just haven’t gotten the players ever since that team disbanded that offseason, and I think a lot of it has to do with Huggins age. Most of the greats struggle to put a good team on the floor at the end, kids don’t want to be on a team where the coach leaves in the middle of their playing career.

That is true, but as the great WVUALLEN suggested, it gave you a brand, or as I would call it, a style of play that provided the fan base with hope and excitement. It also drew a style of player to the program. I can tell you that nobody wanted to face that type of style in the NCAA tournament, particularly when you have limited time to prepare for it. It basically allowed WVU to offset their opponents having better talent. If you don't have the talent to win, you have to use something unorthodox to even the playing field.

Many teams do this across multiple sports. See Navy/Army/Air Force in football. See Spot the Ball in the days of Rod. John Cheney's Temple teams. Penn's backdoor cuts, and even JB's style when he was WVU's coach.

And couldn’t get past teams with next level talent. What was Press Virginia’s record in Sweet 16s and Big XII championship games? Like 0-7? There’s a reason they don’t press in the NBA.

How many pressure teams have advanced to a Final Four, or even an Elite 8? I don’t think I can recall one. We were probably the most successful pressing team in the last 40 years and it yielded a bunch of Sweet 16s and no hardware, so until proven otherwise, that’s the ceiling. And the ceiling was achieved by finding a rare 3* who became one of the best (if not the best) defensive guards ever seen at the college level.

Arkansas. Getting hardware at WVU is a difficult task for any coach. So difficult we haven't got any yet. Not even 60 and 70 years ago with some of our greatest teams all time.

Arkansas was in the final four three times back in the 90s, with Nolan Richardson's 40 minutes of hell.
