Miller isn’t the problem, IMO. His OLs at WSU were really good.

The issue is we have big time problems at RT and center. We are not great at guard either, but we simply don’t have the personnel to fit this OL scheme right now. Outside of Charles Cross, who has been good. We also need much more practice time.

It has been the most disappointing position group. I thought we’d be good at OL.

We haven’t historically recruited pass blocking linemen. I think that may? have started a little bit in the Moorehead era though. I just hope we can acclimate better next year.

The biggest question mark I have about Leach going forward is can he recruit the right personnel fit on the OL? We need a lot of offensive tackle type bodies to make this scheme work, and those guys are in high demand.

I like the two high school guys we have committed now, but we need to sign 4-5 OT type players every year. No more boxy OG body types.

I’m pretty excited to see how Gabe works out on the line. The way this line has played he could probably suit up now.

His 2008 Texas Tech OL was one of the best in the country
Texas Tech's gigantic offensive line as follows:
LT: 6'7” 314 Reed Sr.
LG: 6'6” 335 Vasquez Sr.
C: 6'4” 306 Byrnes Jr.
RG: 6'7” 360 Carter Jr.
RT: 6'7” 358 Johnson Sr. (or) 6'6” 329 Winn Jr.

Where would we be if we had Hevesy rather than Miller?

My mother coached OL back in the 1960's for a HS in Florida.

She is available.

Good lord. Pass blocking is only a skill I picked up in pee wee league.

Mason Miller needs to be gone yesterday.

Your OL coach did really well at WSU. I wish he stayed.

You have essentially a 5 tackle OL. They will likely bring in 5 OL per year, all being 6’5” or taller. The shorter kids don't typically have the levers to handle pass rushers in space.

Part of our problem now is coach stubbornness. We don't have guys with the length to run these wide splits. Will we eventually? Sure, but for this year it seems like we are asking them to do something beyond their capabilities

Yeah, you can on some things, but not a lack of talent. We have some OL that are too slow and just aren't very good.

BINGO! They are also having to learn and some of them definitely have a problem with that.

You could bring in the top OL coach in the country but if the guys they are coaching can't make the plays they are just waiting their time.

Well, I think you can pin a lot of oline issues on coaching.

I disagree. Mason Miller is a good coach. And he knows exactly what Leach needs from the OL to make this work. He did a great job at WSU. He just needs time and the right personnel. Cross and Parker have been good because they fit the scheme. I think Dolla Bill will too in time. We really need to sign the Etienne guy from JUCO- he would probably start immediately.

It kind of reminds me of our fans blaming Butch Thompson for our pitching issues Cohen’s first two years as the baseball coach.

I know Leach doesn’t use TE, but if there ever a time to use a TE - this would be it. We do not have anyone on the roster apparently that can play RT and block one on one. You’ve got to put someone over there to help.

I think our left tackle has been good. Our right tackle play has been atrocious. What part of my post did you infer me saying our tackle play as a whole has been good?

I think Mason Miller is a good OL coach- particularly for the air raid. We just need to get the right type of player and enough reps to make it work. We have a bunch of road grading OLs that don’t have great feet, and we haven’t had enough practice time.

I also don’t think our OL looked as bad when Rogers came in, because he can manipulate the pocket better and get the ball out on time. Still not good OL play, but it looked smoother.

Also we put our former TE's in with their hands in the dirt. They have the size, quickness, and feet to get in front of the pass rush. Leach made adjustments in the second half and they looked good. We looked better tonight than the last 2 games. It's coming. Get on board or get left behind.

RT is pretty awful. About as bad as OL play as I’ve seen in a long time came from the RT today.

How in the hell do our personnel not fit the scheme? It's pass blocking. I picked up that skill in pee wee league at the age of 7 or 8. Offensive line isn't that complicated. For Christ's sake, block somebody. Easy.

I noticed that too. We had some TEs in three point stances in the second half today. Could see more of that going forward on the right side of our line to help our RT.

I’m not sure if that’s a permanent change Leach wants to keep doing in the future, but it would sure help this year.

We used a TE lining up off right tackle some in the second half yesterday. May see more of that going forward this year.

Are there 6’5” 260# DL that run a 4.6 in your pee wee league?

LOL, offensive line isn’t that complicated? Just block somebody? OL is probably the most technically difficult and hardest to pick up position on the field, outside of QB. OLs usually have to be some of the smartest players on the team. Your ignorance is showing.

Many of our current players aren’t good fits because they simply do not have great feet. Hevesy and Johnson didn’t value the same attributes in linemen as Miller and Leach do in this scheme. We need a bunch of guys who are 6’6”+ with long arms and gods feet. It doesn’t really matter if they only weigh 230 pounds in HS, we can put more weight on them.

Look at the measurables Wrapit posted on the 2008 TTU OL. That’s what we are looking for here, along with good feet.

So you think our tackles have been good?
Come on, man, I know you understand this logic. We all know our line play hasn't been good, Mason Miller included. He was yelling at them the entire game yesterday. But surely you understand that some of these guys are physically limited and we also haven't had the time to teach them properly? The Butch analogy was an accurate one.

Some of you are still on the kick about molding your scheme to your players. Well, Leach isn't going to do that. If you want someone to blame for that, it's Cohen.
