Blame PETA. When I was a young man you got 25 bucks a pelt for the things. People would see intact ones dead on the side of the road, stop, and skin 'em on the spot. It was free money.

Since you've got a live catch trap, keep one of the rascals, fatten it up on table scraps for a few weeks, then cook it in crock pot all day with your favorite bbq sauce. There's nothing that beats a pulled raccoon sandwich at a Saturday tailgate on cool fall afternoon.
