Martinez not bought in?

I mentioned awhile back my fear that the lack of commitment, poor mentality from upper class men would trickle down to the under class men. Is this what we are seeing with Martinez? Last year he looked like he had fire, and passion and was going balls to the walls every play. This year he seems slow, indecisive, and lacking that fire and passion he had. Similar to what we are seeing out of Wandale this year. If indeed this is what has happened, and this type of mentality is contagious, how does it get stopped.

He’s been an ineffective leader, lacking that fire you reference. I still love the kid, but objectively he’s been awful and is clearly “part” of the overall problem.
Today protection was as good as it’s been all year.

He's all in. Plays hard, cares, and wants to win. Just a struggle for him this year.

I question his heart and killer instinct. Has no feel for the game, misses way too many open receivers and can not anticipate their openess.

Winning.

But, how do you win if everyone isn't bought in? It's a chicken/egg dilemma.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Martinez, though (in part because he's likely to start at least 27 more games at Nebraska if he stays healthy), but the offensive tempo is clearly slower with him in the game and it feels like the team executes almost in spite of him instead of because of him.

In a season where Nebraska has underachieved in a major way, Martinez's performance is the single most disappointing aspect of this season, even more disappointing than the loss of Maurice Washington.

Seems like he was busy reading his press clippings in the off-season. With the way Frost runs this offense I think he needs a better passer.

I think he’s bought in, but I question him between the ears. Some people can’t perform under pressure. Last year there were no real expectations, so he outperformed. This year there were big expectations and he has failed continuously.

I think he was frustrated with himself today, which nobody showed that outwardly if they're not bought in. He appeared to wear his emotions on his sleeve at times, whether lamenting a bad throw or forcing a celebration just to keep amped up.

I do think he's either still nursing some secret injury, or has become overcoached. Probably mostly the latter seeing as to how young he was when he got put in with everything placed on his shoulders so early on.

Seems like he's striving to become more of a pocket passer these days, which is fine and dandy except this offense demands effective QB runs. It might come down to him having to choose to play along, or get benched possibly as early as the beginning of next season. We'll see if Frost is even capable of making that kind of move though...

He's been injured the whole year and still isn't healthy. There's no question but that he's struggling. He misread the D in the pass game multiple times today and couldn't find open receivers. Last year they gave him one read and then take off if it wasn't there. This year he looks like he's wallowing in the decision making process. Missing weeks of practice and games hasn't helped him and not having Stanley as an option is really hurt him. IMO, RIGHT NOW, we would be better off starting Vedral if he can get back healthy. JMHO.

It’s between his ears, I think BIG RED RULES. Nailed it. Kid needs to relax and get out of his own way. He seems timid to tuck and run it, gives it’s on every zone read, and has missed too many throws. Talent is there but execution isn’t, must drive Fost and Verducci (sp) crazy

When Martinez wants to use his legs as a weapon he is very effective. this is what we witnessed in 2018. this is what we witnessed in illinois 2nd half. and on a couple red zones today. However, someone is coaching him to abandon his running threat and to stand in the pocket and pass and when he gets flushed from the pocket and he has open lanes to run and move the chains he still rejects that option and often forces a pass. if he isnt getting coached to do this then he is doing this on his own probably as a result of the manning QB camp

You could clearly see Frost tell him to run it on that 4th and 5 when he got bailed out by the PI. He had 10 yards at least of green grass in front of him. Run the damn ball. It's 4th down!!

Why do we keep mailing excuses for this guy? You're either able to play and perform or not. There is zero benefit of trotting out a guy that's hurt and can't perform. What's the purpose? Get him hurt worse? This guy made some horrible decisions last year and we act like his play is unexpected.

The problem today is that McCaffrey didn't travel due to injury and supposedly Vedral was only available in an emergency. It was Bunch if not AM and then Masker. I'm not sure a healthy Bunch is better than a wounded AM.

I believe Martinez is bought in and cares. The problem is, in Frost's own coaching terms: he is a slow blinker. Plain and simple.

I am no expert. Some guys have a hard time coming back from injuries. If you worry about getting hurt you Are thinking about it and it distracts you and effects your game . He is human seems like a nice kid. No reason to trash him it’s not his fault the coaches think he gives Nebraska the best chance to win. I feel bad for the kid.
Some other threads are just ripping him

Too often fans correlate performance with caring.

And then they criticize the players for lacking fire when they make a bad play and are looking down the barrel at their third straight loss.

As if they should have as much fire as Jason Peter. Completely neglecting the fact that these players have lost more games this year than Peter did in his entire college career.

I wonder if there is some nagging injury that is in his head a bit. Also, making him a captain as a true sophomore may have been more than he should handle.

but then again, the fact that darrien Daniels walked on campus and was made a captain says a lot about the rest of our upperclassmen

Nice kid. Talent is there. But he just does not have it. Needs an offseason to hopefully get his head right. That said, I'm not sure he's cut out for this.

He cares, he just hasn’t progressed like he was expected to. If you can’t tell that dude is wearing these losses, then you are blind.

Amen, we have a 19 year old standing up and accepting the blame for his performance being criticized by never has been fans and media. Greatest fans for sure.

Sit AM down. He’s a good kid, but is not good right now. Guy missed open WR and TE for first downs... doesn’t run and pick up yards when he’s got open field in front of him. To me that is the most frustrating thing! Run the ball!!! I am constantly yelling at the guy to run when he’s got space.

I thought everyone was bat **** crazy clamoring for Vederal. But I have to admit last week against Indiana the offense found a new gear.

Overall Martinez has more talent, but that doesn't mean **** if you cant execute the simple stuff.

I would also say Frost called a way different game with Vederal as QB. So unless it was true that Vederal was truly an emergency only option today I think it was a mistake not making a change at some point today

Different situations. Last week Frost knew he had McCaffrey if Vedral went down. Today it was Andrew Bunch and Masker. Vedral wasn't going to play unless it was a dire emergency IMO. You don't take 4 QBs if Vedral is a go.

FFS people. Why do some feel it necessary to bag on kids to this degree? I get pissed and say things on some particular play, but I don't think I take it to this degree. He is a kid. He is in a huge fishbowl. It isn't for everyone. AM conducts himself well in public. He represents our program. But because he is struggling whether due to injury, jitters, rust, or maybe just not having "it", we feel the need to tear him down? Absolutely pathetic.

Was I tearing him down suggesting he may have picked up on the upper class mentality?
