Interesting quote from him caught by Todderick:

"The town of Iowa City is amazing," he said. "It's not what everybody told me it was. It's not just corn fields and stuff. Everybody in the city gets along. The atmosphere of Iowa is just great. Everybody loves the Hawkeyes because they don't have any professional teams or anything. So everybody just loves the Iowa Hawkeyes. Everybody is a fan."

Sounds like the makings of a new TV Show, Everybody Loves Hawkeye?

Hoping that the kid called or contacted the coaches instead of informing via social media, but what can you do. Good luck to him, not sure LIVING in Iowa is the same as visiting, but he came away impressed.

So, we move on.

We can find something wrong about any place recruits choose over committing to Rutgers, but there are reasons why a recruit might do so.
One is the atmosphere in the city where a school is located , the recruit visits, feels like:
>Upon arriving in Iowa City, you will notice that everything is black and gold, including the clothing of most people you pass. Rub your eyes all you like; you’re not seeing things. The Iowa Hawkeyes are members of the Big Ten Conference and compete in Division 1 of the NCAA, but they aren’t just the athletic teams representing the University of Iowa. Being a Hawkeye is also one of the main religions in the state. Kinnick Stadium, where football is played, and Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where basketball games take place, are considered by many to be holy ground.<

This is why I have lost almost all interest in football recruiting. I used to find it highly interesting but now it's just boring. And it isn't just a Rutgers thing. It's the state of college football.

It's musical chairs, and the only thing that matters is where people are when the music stops in Feb. Commits, decommits. It's almost bad to be the first school these kids "commit" to.

It makes the moves that Rockin Randy make almost understandable. There is no honor or integrity. It is every man for himself no matter what. Best to understand the rules and accept them- there are none. And operate with that mindset.

Wake me up in Feb. It will be more interesting then.

See your point - but will disagree in that - what Edsall did was vile
Edsall - is a 58 year old grown man with adult children - a Head Coach - somebody who you should expect to have maturity and be trustworthy - somebody who sits down with recruits & the parents of recruits - in their home & dials up the schmoozing sincerity to the max and looks them in the eyes and says "trust me with your son, I will look out for his well being as if he were my own ...trust me - I know what it is like to be a parent of a college football player ... trust ME with your son's future" . -and then reassures & promises a kid that his full scholarship to the University of his choice is solid & secure - then yanks it away 2 weeks before signing day - that is repugnant, that is a zero integrity move.

This can't compare to the inexplicable / fickle / transient thinking of a 17-18 year old. Realistically, just about all 17-18 year old kids should be slightly flaky - they are making some of the most critical decisions of their life - they should be losing sleep over this if they have any questions - Their 'risk factor' / impact on the rest of their life - is orders of magnitude greater than that of any of the HC's pursuing them - and the recruits have next to zero basis of sound experience in this area - and largely are operating on emotion .

The situation of the Recruit & Head Coach in the recruiting process is like the old adage about the distinction between "Committed" and "Involved" - which is like making Bacon and Eggs for breakfast - the Chicken is 'involved' and the pig is 'committed' - in the case of recruiting an individual kid - the Head Coach (with the $2-5 million dollar a year package, with a 85 scholarship players with a securely established career) - well the head coach - is like the chicken - very much involved - but not putting their only opportunity into the frying pan.

This is not to say that it is OK for Recruits to behave poorly - but no amount of poor behavior excuses Edsall's zero integrity maneuver.

I love Rutgers, but this is by far and away not only the worst thing about rooting for college sports, but also the most ridiculous. Only on this planet would we give a 17-18 year old diva who thinks the world revolves around them this much power. I really need to stop paying attention to recruiting - makes me sick.

The power to choose where they go to college? Some fans just can't handle recruiting and are better off just waiting until Signing Day to see their school's class. If this really "makes you sick," you might be one of those fans.

There are so many factors that can go into the decision making process of 17-18-19 year old - some smart - some dumb - some obvious and public - some private, unknown & none of our damn business.

Good, bad or indifferent - the place where a 17-18-19 year old chooses to go to college really etches permanent paragraphs into their life story. The hope is that everything stacks up in the best way possible.

They already had a tv show - Coach - loosely based on Hayden Fry. If the kid loves the rural atmosphere, good for him. Ain't for me, though.

Seems a little harsh.

Look, he can decommit as that is his prerogative; but at least have the decency to call the coaches about it rather than tweet it to them. If he did prior, then I would back down. If not, then if I were his parent I'd have a long conversation with him about respect and courtesy towards those who presented you opportunity that you took, then decided to walk away from. That is what grown adults do and what teens should be taught. Just my $0.02.

Exactly. While many of us live in and love NJ, the statement I quoted above says it all. He wants to get out of this area and go to a college town where there are no pro teams.

There is no excuse for any of it. But it's where the state of college football recruiting is.

Recruits, coaches, schools, it's all about getting the best you can get. If you have to do unsavory things to do it, you do.

That's the recruiting game. One can hope for integrity and honor but there just isn't.

That's ok, no one is breaking laws. I just find it boring now.

Most people will not begrudge these kids for doing what is best for them. What is NOT KOSHER is putting the school that originally gave you a chance (and actually helped you to do what it took to earn a scholarship) in a bad situation of now scrambling to find a replacement. Fans were quick to bash Jimmy boy last year when he rescinded offers to committed kids because he found higher rated ones. Ash doesn't do that. Heck most people thought Edsall was a prick for pulling the offer from that kid from Raritan. Well, when a kid decommits last minute, it's essentially the same thing.

Ash mentioned the need for speed at the end of the season. This decommit and Watts are two of the fastest (if not the fastest) kids in this class. They have to be replaced and some indications are Blackshear will go to MSU. It will be a failure in recruiting not to replace these guys.

Along those lines, Ash needs to fill the open coaching position with a stud recruiter - regardless of his football acumen - IMO.

Blackshear was never ours to begin with, and is a Pennsy kid, but it would be nice to snag him over MSU.

Agreed - wasn't implying he was a decommit from us. But we were recruiting him after the Temple decommit and there seemed to be interest. Hoping he could be a replacement for Watts but it doesn't appear that will happen. Hopefully the staff has some other targets they are closing in on. We will see what this next week brings.

Well, at least he didn't mention anything about being guided in his decision by a "higher power", so I'll give him that, (but that's all I'll give him).

It's clear he was swayed by the "children of the corn" on his OV, but I doubt the difference in dynamic between Iowa and Newark can truly be gauged during the course of a weekend. Once he gets there to stay, however, is when reality will really hit. -And who knows? Maybe he'll love the change of scenery. On the other hand, though, there's just as much chance he'll say to himself, "What the hell was I thinking"???

So, Mr. Marsette, you've made your choice to de-commit and that's your right. That said, don't let any stalks hit 'ya in the butt on the way out.

A little harsh. I kid from the city visits the country and sees a world that he has not seen before and goes for it. Yeah, it sucks for RU, but the opportunity just presented itself and it what he thinks he wants. Not going to do anything but say good bye and good luck.

As per one of the Weequahic coaches he has been told that Iowa wants him as a WR and they expect him to return kicks next year. The coach said that they have been teaching him a jab step at WR and once he plants, he's gone.
Federici made some friends when Iowa recruited the RB. Supposedly the kid wanted an RU offer but the staff passed.
I don't think the staff was caught off guard with this decommit

Wow... I wonder how many kids per team are being told they will get the Jabril Peppers treatment.... do whatever you want here.. play both ways, specials, whatever. Ha! How many recruits for the same team get told that?!

I hope that the Weequahic HC gave Ash an inkling that this decommit was in process. If not then I hold him somewhat accountable here. He will want to send future players to RU.

The player is only 155 lbs. Is he sturdy enough for B1G FB ? And when you add in his academic issues I'm not so sure we will regret this decommit a year from now.

CFB is a rigged game. At least in the pros if you finish at the bottom you get first dibs at the incoming talent pool. This distributes the top talent and gives the lesser teams a chance to get better and compete. I couldn't find one 5 star committed to a school other than the usual suspects Alabama, Ohio State, USC, LSU, etc, etc.

Because they would never go to any other schools besides those. It would be beneath them according to their parents, family and friends, HS coaches, etc.

Unless a 5 star is hell bent on going to a non powerhouse or you pull the old Ole Miss Auburn move and just pay them $100,000 plus to commit, they won't go anywhere else.

Yep, it is just ignorance I believe. Every place has its good and bad. Hard for some to comprehend that Iowa City might just be an awesome place to go to school. Wish the kid stuck to his commitment but it happens.

If you're the Cleveland Browns, it does not matter. This system does not seem to help. I feel sorry for the QB who is taken #1 this year.

Because Cleveland's ownership is pathetic. When the Colts lost Peyton Manning they were abysmal. They got Andrew Luck and they were a playoff team again. Derek Carr did the same thing for Oakland. I wish college football worked that way, since we finished last in the B1G, we get Drew Singleton.
