Maroon/White Chant

Alright, with the recent video put out today by our athletic department of our football team singing the maroon/white chant in Cadence, it’s time to get the students on board. I’m sick of them speeding through it and making it sound like ****. It’s embarrassing and it’s really not hard. I was a student a few years back and it pissed me off then and it still pisses me off. How can we fix this? Should the athletic department make a tutorial video for all student to watch? Practice every Thursday night before a home game? Suggestions? If anyone knows anyone in the athletic department let’s please get the ball rolling on this. It’s past time. Make our fight song great again. #MOFSGA

Just put hyperbolic mikes in front of the ones who do it right and they will drown out the imbeciles who speed it up because they cannot follow the band playing the tune. Then when the doofuses finish about 10 seconds too soon, they will actually here the fans completing it correctly and wonder what happened.***

I think it's more about not being able to hear the band than anything. The students get it right at basketball games. But at a football game in the student section, you honestly can't hear the band. You can hear the first note of the song and that's it. Only reason you know when to say "Hey, Go State," is because everyone is singing the beat

I just wish we would come up with an ending to the classic "Maroon! White" back-and-forth cheer that starts strong and always just fizzles out. It needs a strong ending so badly. Do it three times then scream Hail State or something. Anything. Give that thing some definitive finish.

Who's in charge of this? I need to write a sternly worded letter.****

***Dear Mr. President,
There are too many states. Please eliminate three. I am not a crackpot.

Are we doing Cowbell Yell again? I think that we need to practice it where the band stops and starts over mid-song if it speeds up. They can pipe in the "Wrong, do it again!" from Another Brick in the Wall

Yes you can't hear the band very well at all. All you can hear is everybody yelling. Not sure how you fix it without doing karaoke on the jumbotron.

My idea is stupid yet simplistic....have a singalong video on the board with a follow-the-bouncing-ball thing going on top of the lyrics.

I usderstand the students may not be able to hear the band but I do it with my young kids in the car and the timing on that song is not impossible to master.

Just put maroon and white on the proper sides of the Jumbotron and have the shake when it's their turn to be said.

Thank you. If you need to hear the freakin band to keep the right cadence you shouldn't be attending college. I blame drunkenness, mob mentality and just not giving a 17.

I’ve come to the conclusion that they do it on purpose. The freaking band is in their leftt ear basically. I can’t imagine them not hearing the band.

Yep. I started at State 19 years ago. They were doing it then, and they're still doing it now. About half the students would just look around like "WTF are y'all doing?" when they would speed it up on purpose. The ones speeding it up would be laughing. Here's the thing about a lot of college students: They're ********.

There’s a video on YouTube at a rave in the library prior to us demolishing Michigan in the Gator Bowl. They do the chant perfectly and stay in unison with how it is supposed to go. I say give these slapdicks one more chance to get it right during the SA Austin game. Tell them that if they 17 it up its gone.

Nope, NOT just anything. 'The South Will Rise Again' at the end didn't work out very well for a certain school.**

There is no doubt it's done on purpose. They think looking stupid is funny and cool.

I think it gets done too fast because it's what the students say on kickoffs. Since you have to say it fast then it carries over to when the band plays it. The solution is to start a new tradition where on kickoffs we say HAIL STATE or GO DAWGS or HUGH FREEZE WAS FORCED TO RESIGN BECAUSE HE WAS SOLICITING PROSTITUTES USING A STATE ISSUED CELL PHONE or something

I sit just above the students in the scoreboard club and can hear the band just fine at the other end of the field. This year, the band will be right in front of them since we've switched the home locker room to the north endzone and they'll still do it.

I still find it funny that the local ministers insisted that there not be pregame prayer at MSU because of GTHOM.

A lot of the problem is what we called "phasing" in the band. I don't know if that is a scientific term. It's easy to get out of sync between the sides of the stadium because they are so far apart. It takes sound almost a full second to travel from one end of the stadium to the other.

Not quite a second but it's certainly an issue. Speed of sound is 1125 ft/sec. More like a half second from one end to the other (including the stands), but it's still very noticeable. There might be some reflection of the student section, back to the student section, off the big video board that can be close to a second. Stadiums aren't the greatest environment for sound since they are so large. Pretty sure it always bothers singers of the National Anthem when the sound of their voice comes back to them over the speaker system.

But yet when something exciting happens on the field the entire stadium reacts at the same time.
The students start out in unison with the entire stadium with “we’re gonna beat the hell out of you!”
It’s the second part the insist on 17’ing up.

I haven't been on board to date, but maybe we do need to legalize the doobage to fix the problem. Or maybe we are a cocaine school.***

It’s not an issue of being able to hear. Fans sitting in the upper deck far away from the band do it in time. It may be slightly off from the band because of an echo and the sound having to travel, but they don’t speed it up. They try to go with the band. And I don’t think the kickoff chant causes the confusion either.

I’m in the band. We’ve practiced it with the students at Cowbell Yell in my two years here, and the students do it right for that event. The problem only happens on football gamedays. It’s pretty clear that there are students who are doing it on purpose just be to be douchebags and look cool. I really don’t want to accuse any particular groups, but many of us have a pretty good idea of what students are leading the charge to speed it up.

I really wish the Athletics department would put out a video with Joe Moorhead and some of the players asking the students to go with the band. These idiots think it’s funny, but what they don’t get is that they just make us look bad. We look like dumb hicks who are incapable of doing even a basic cheer correctly.

Not the same thing. For one, a roar after a touchdown doesn't have to be synchronized. Second, the field is centrally located to all fans. We're talking about getting one side to sync with the other.

That's because the entire crowd sees whatever happens at essentially the same time. Light travels at about 670,000,000 miles/hour; sound travels at about 767 miles/hour at sea level ... so light travels about 875,000 times the speed of sound.

Only band members get this. As a former drummer, what people have to realize is that if you go by sound to try to stay together it CAN NOT be done, at least not when you are that far away. If you WATCH the students they are fist pumping with their cowbells along to the beat of the fight song, which means thats the tempo they are cheering at. Everyone has to WATCH the student section and cheer in time with them. No bouncy ball karaoke video, no yell leaders, just put the student section on the jumbo tron and WATCH them and cheer along with what you see not what you hear.

Who were those prostitutes for though? That is the real question that literally no media person has asked.

I was a student from 11–15. You can hear the band fine in the student section—people are just dumb and refuse to learn the timing.

Say what you want about A$M, but they get it right, yell leaders or not.

I would much rather get it wrong than have yell leaders. Our fans are the only ones that really notice the students 17ing up the cheer......EVERYONE notices the yell leaders and it's not in a good way.
